The Power Is On! L
ast month I lost power at my home for a brief time and something amazing happened: I read a book for the first time in years. We’re all dependent on electricity. It powers our life. Good and bad. Facebook, appliances, internet and most importantly, porn. Turn off all of your electronic devices and read this issue cover to cover. You’ll be amazed!
The Power of Some There’s some amazing people in our community who go above and beyond to make our world a better place, starting right here. While ION Arizona doesn’t market a big award contest, we carefully select the leaders featured in our 9th Annual Prismatic Pride Awards. Congratulations to all of this year’s winners!
want to reverse all the progress we’ve made over the years. We have the power to change this direction by voting this November. It’ll be here before you know it. It’s really that easy. You have the power!
The Power of One I have been lucky enough to be in love four times in my life. I feel fortunate and grateful. But unfortunately, it takes two to tango and one person’s needs and desires aren’t always your partner’s. That’s life and that makes it an awesome journey. Love yourself and enjoy the journey! There’s nothing you and our community can’t accomplish if you really want it and are ready to work for it. If we work together and support each other, it will be easy to change your world and our world.
The Power of All This year has been very challenging for our community, our state and our country. It seems that some people

Not only that, in the luxuriously appointed tent you can relax in air conditioned comfort, enjoy adult beverages with your friends, and use the “executive restroom.” Expect a few more surprises on hand with your VIP ticket available online at PhoenixPride.org/vip Bud Light Main Stage: Music is the great cosmic gate to Togetherness. Now don’t get all judgy ... there’s something here for everyone!
VIZIN Native American VIZIN (pron. “vision”) is a long way from the Peace Garden State of North Dakota. The glitz and glamour of Hollywood is “home” now. She charted with her cover and music video of Sylvester’s gay anthem, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” besting Taylor Swift on the Billboard Dance chart. VIZIN will plug into the Phoenix Pride vibe and get the party started.
Saturday, 4:30 p.m.

He’s sang at Pride events all over the country, fundraisers, ships sailing the Seven Seas, and entertained our troops abroad. Now our boy comes home! “Finally, I get to sing in my home city for Pride! There really isn’t a greater honor than to come home and sing for all of the people in my home state. I always appreciate the love from the place I was born and raised in. I look forward to getting on stage and singing my face off!” David told ION Arizona. Kristine W With 17 Billboard Dance Hits, this Diva of Dance Music brings her magic to Phoenix Pride. Billboard Magazine named this Electronica and jazz singer/ songwriter one of the top three dance artists of the decade, right up there with Madonna and Beyoncé. She’s performed more live shows than Elvis Presley. This chart-topping artist is one of the all-time dance music greats who’ve shaped our moves on the dance floor over the past 20 years. And that’s no lie. Look it up. Better yet, see Kristine W for yourself. This is a Bucket List “Must.” We’re not kidding.
Sunday, 7 p.m.
Berlin “I’m a man, I’m a goddess, I’m a blue movie, I’m a virgin, I’m a geisha ... and we make love together ...” You can’t create a soundtrack to the 80’s without including the Euro-pop, New Wave tunes of Berlin. No “One Hit Wonder,” they turned out hit after hit, including “The Metro,” “No More Words,” and “You Take My Breath Away” from the classic film, Top Gun. Berlin’s show-stopping performance caps off the weekend of Phoenix Pride. Fun Fact: Lead singer Terri Nunn auditioned for the role of “Princess Leia” in a little known motion picture called Star Wars. Ever hear of it?

ION Arizona is proud to highlight some of the people who make the Phoenix LGBT family and community shine a little bit brighter and more colorfully. These valuable people contribute so much to make us proud.
Rising Star Juno Baier
Our “Rising Star” prefers the neutral pronoun “their/them” for identification. one•n•ten helped Juno navigate their journey to stay alive, growing from the shy girl of 2015 to the confident, inspired young adult today and winner of a QU Scholarship. “My voice is regularly heard by an online audience of almost 60,000 on Instagram. I’m a member of the GLSEN Street Team and spread the message to empower change. I push knowledge. I love radically. I speak up and will shout until I am heard. I will not stop until change is made.” Juno believes “My dream is to spend the rest of my life doing this work— nothing could make me happier.” We’re excited to see their star rising high! The Passion Award Jimmy Thomason

I assist employees with critical needs who are homeless, or experience disasters, like fires. He sits on the board of Aunt Rita’s Foundation, volunteers annually as a cabin counselor at one•n•ten’s Camp OUTdoors, served on committees and chaired fundraisers for LGBT and HIV/AIDS organizations. “I can do all this because Bank of America allows employees two paid hours per week to volunteer at any organization they’re passionate about. My life’s goal is to be the person I needed when I was younger.” Starting this year, Bank of America will be the annual presenting sponsor of the Phoenix Pride Parade. 56

Transformers You can’t take everything for face value—especially in the movie biz. This month we’re highlighting a couple of different pictures that take a look at this very issue. Things aren’t always what they seem. Or are they?
I Feel Pretty Starring: Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Aidy Bryant In a world where body shaming, feelings of inadequacy, self-esteem issues and insecurity are the status quo for pretty much everybody, we get a lesson about beauty being way more than skin deep in this comedy where body dysmorphia meets amnesia. It’s an interesting twist about what’s beautiful, slightly reminiscent of the 2001 Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow romcom, Shallow Hal. Renee (Schumer) is chubby, plain and painfully average. When she has an accident on the treadmill and gets a knock on noggin, she wakes to a brand new “her.” Suddenly she’s confident, capable ... and the most beautiful
woman on earth. What happens when she channels her inner-Linda Evangelista? Will the doors she opens stay open? Look for supermodels Lauren Hutton and Naomi Campbell to make appearances. It’s bound to be better than Schumer’s 2017 disaster, Snatched. Release: April 27
Animal Crackers Voiced by: John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Danny DeVito, Sylvester Stallone, Patrick Warburton Not my circus. Not my monkeys. Well, unless you’re the Huntington family. Owen (Kraskinski, The Office) and Zoe (Blunt, Girl on a Train and Krasinski’s real life wife) inherit a dilapidated circus. But life under the big top comes with a catch: a mysterious box of animal crackers changes the person who eats a cracker into that animal with lots of complications, as you can imagine. With an incredible all-star line-up of voice talent, look for this animated spectacular to be more fun than, well, a three-ring circus. Release: April 27 April 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 75

Calum Scott
Only Human
If there were a discussion about the official LGBT anthem, along with “I Will Survive” and “Born This Way” would be Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own.” Scott performed his poignant version on 2015’s Britain’s Got Talent, emerging as a semi-finalist. The track hit No. 1 on iTunes in 11 countries and became the best-selling UK single by a British solo artist in 2016. Now Scott delivers his full-length debut. Much of Only Human plays to Scott’s perfectly sculpted vocals at the front of piano and acoustic guitar ballads. “You Are The Reason,” “Hotel Room” and “Not Dark Yet” are all road trip ready tracks. He picks up the tempo and production with “What I Miss Most,” “Give Me Something” and “Rhythm Inside,” but they fall short. It’d be interesting to hear Scott experiment with something like Disclosure’s “Latch” or something sexy in the vein of Olly Alexander or Troye Sivan. Scott’s codified his vocal abilities leaving us wondering what could be next. Available Now
Trixie Mattel
One Stone Say what you will about the outcome of RPDR All-Stars 3, Brian Firkus, known as the batteries not included Trixie Mattel, was steadily snatching
her way to the top with her Viceland produced web show and chart topping debut folk album, Two Birds. One Stone opens with “Little Sister,” a poignant message to Mattel’s sister urging her to leave home and see the world: “If you only lived here, did you really live at all?” “Break Your Heart” is very much like the Dixie Chicks’ “There’s Your Trouble.” Trixie confronts her own work ethic with “Soldier.” “Our hand moves faster with a scotch,” she confesses. “Spend the day regrettin’, but I’m bettin’ that you’ll do it all again next weekend.” We heard an acoustic version “Moving Parts” on All-Stars 3 but the full-length album version with lush instrumentation marries Mattel’s Barbie doll aesthetic and deeply personal folk song writing. In a world full of death drops and splits, Trixie’s folk fantasy is breath of fresh air. Available Now

Drugs and Dreams Liquid Sky (1983) Produced on a shoestring budget of $500,000 (and, believe me, it shows), this picture made headlines at film festivals, becoming the most successful independent movie of 1983, grossing nearly two million dollars in the first few months of its release. Set in gritty, grimy, early 1980s New York City, this bizarre movie chronicles the city’s self-indulgent New Wave club scene. The convoluted, confusing story has plenty of head scratching sub-plots set to a score vaguely reminiscent of the Euro-synth sound of Kraftwerk or Brian Eno. Anne Carlisle performs a duel role as bored, Bowie-esque, glam rock bisexual, Margaret, (“... an uptight, WASP c*nt from Connecticut!” sneers her drugdealing girlfriend, Adrian) and as her snotty, gay enemy, Jimmy. In Margaret’s search for heroin (the eponymous “Liquid Sky”), she discovers her sex partners vaporize as they achieve orgasm. (“It’s only fair that I warn them that this pussy has teeth.”) Aliens in a flying saucer hovering over the city feed off of Margaret’s victims’ endorphins as they expire.
mimicking the non-sensical early movies of Andy Warhol, giving it an almost cult-like status. Almost. Perhaps most importantly, though, the film openly addresses homosexuality shaping the growing nightlife scene. (“Nobody fucks at the club! Everybody’s gay!” complains Margaret wearing Rocky Horror style face paint.) Underground movie buffs are ecstatic the movie has been reissued, scanned and fully restored in 4K from the original 35mm negative with over 2.5 hours of special features on Blu-ray/DVD. This truly odd film defies a traditional rating system. Rotten Tomatoes gives a 94% approval rating. You might like it. But you might not. Combo pack available April 24 on VinegarSyndrome.com, Amazon.com. Original available now on YouTube
Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall (2017)
Show business wünderkind, Hall is memorable for his YouTube Disney inspired songs and videos, and his original musical, Straight Outta Oz. This inspiring documentary chronicles his youth, his difficult relationship with his mother, and growing up Black and gay in Texas. Look for Hall to perform at Mesa Arts Center, Thursday, May 17, 2018. Premieres April 5 on Netflix. Available now on Amazon, iTunes

Quartiere T
here’s still a few old timers who remember the original Riazzi’s Italian Garden when it was on Van Buren and was considered “fancy.” The looming Loop 202 sent them packing to (then) new digs on Mill Avenue. Ultimately, in August, 2017, they closed after 72 years in the pasta biz. Yep. 72 years. The building sold to the Geyrol family who decided to keep up the tradition of a neighborhood “red sauce restaurant,” picking up where Riazzi’s left off. They uncorked the vino and re-opened the doors of May, 2018 calling it, “Quartiere” ... Italian for “Neighborhood” in a nod to its residential location. (Oddly enough, Tempe doesn’t have many freestanding restaurants.) Our friendly waitress, T, happily offered us dinner entrées, too, although it was still lunchtime. Forgoing hip spins with cavatelli, cavatappi, cavatini, etc., their motto is “Italian food for the people.” You’ll recognize all the traditional, time honored favorites, like manicotti, ravioli, shrimp scampi, and, yes, spaghetti and meatballs, plus standbys like bolognese, marsala, alfredo, sandwiches and antipasti .... and more. More! The family has over 20 years in the restaurant business, and an Andy Warhol-like portrait of their smiling Nana (who was known to smack the kids’ hands when if they got carried away cooking at the stove.) All pasta is made on the premises except for the spaghetti due to the sheer volume, they can’t keep up with production. Most of the
food Quartiere uses is sourced from the Southwest, with many of the pork cuts coming from Colorado. The burger’s beef is from Arizona. Ten different appetizers start things rolling. We couldn’t resist one of their specialities, Mussels served with a divine Calabrese pesto bread. A hefty platter piled high with the briny crustaceans swimming in a delicate garlic and butter sauce sure hit the spot. $13.99 You can’t miss with the delish Gocce™ Beet and Goat Cheese. Beets and goat cheese are stuffed in a tear-drop pillow of pasta, tossed in pesto. (I can’t help but suspect this isn’t house made as previously claimed; Arrezzio Gocce™ pasta products are a specialty of Sysco Food

Service. Who cares? We loved ‘em!) $7.99 We can’t wait to try the Burrata Ball, mozzarella encrusted with five-grain risotto and panko served with rustic bread. $9.99 Their Chicken Parmesan, is a traditional favorite: generously sized, lightly breaded, tender chicken breast is doused with rich marinara and melted mozzarella on a bed of spaghetti, $15.99 If you’re looking for some snacks from the deep, try the Seafood Linguini. Shrimp, clams, and mussels all nestle onto a bed of pasta with a white wine and lemon sauce, $15.99. We wouldn’t have refused a few more bites of seafood. (But isn’t that always the case?) A solid fave is the succulent, tender Short Ribs. The beef is fork tender, and guaranteed to melt-in-your-mouth.
The rich gravy served with five-grain risotto and heirloom carrots gives this Italian pot roast extra texture and taste. You’ll want it every day. $17.99 You gotta have pizza. Quartiere offers six kinds of pizza ranging from $9.99 to $15.99. The “Build your own” starts at $11.49 with extra-toppings for an additional fee. Other inventive pies are “Sausage and Potato” and “From the Sea” with shrimp, calamari, marinara sauce and topped with basil. Riazzi’s may be gone, but it warms our heart to see that Quartiere has picked up the gauntlet, keeping the tradition of a warm, neighborhood Italian café right next door. 2700 S. Art by Brandon McGill Photography by: LeakedGlass Text By: Deon Brown 92
WWW.IONAZ.COM April 2018
Living Art H
is trademark fancy scarves always add a little bit of glamour wherever he goes. His art is part of the Phoenix cultural landscape. Artist Brandon McGill made this happen when he took his artwork off of the easel and put it on the solar plexus, scapula, pectoralis major and even the gluteus maximus beginning five years ago. His living, although temporary, art of body painting keeps evolving. Cultivating interesting experiences for, both, the participant and the viewer motivates Brandon. “Every photo should tell a story. You connect with the art and the person wearing it,” he said. “That’s when the art truly comes alive.” Brandon’s inspiration to pursue body painting as his canvas of choice evolved organically. “William was a canvas model at the time. He insisted I use the paint on him instead of the canvas. I took his advice and painted his skin. Everyone loved it and encouraged me to paint his whole body. It really resonated with
people,” Brandon recalled. Painting his models’ bodies enables Brandon to expose them in a variety of ways. “I get to know people and learn about their lives. I try to incorporate bits of their personality into the art.” Brandon’s art forwards his own personal philosophy. “My art promotes transvisibility, encourages body positivity, and supports local theatre. All body types are welcome in my studio,” he believes. He’s also a photographer, filmmaker. His past series include, “Alive in Wonderland,” “Zodiac,” and now the enormously popular “Gods & Monsters.” His latest series, seen here, is “Neon City,” the bookend to a year of hard work, and his first major project since he quit his day job and able to devote himself to creating art full-time—a luxury for an artist. His enthusiastic promotion and marketing made this possible via Patreon.com, a “Kickstarter” kind of subscription where others can support a variety of entrepreneurs. April 2018 WWW.IONAZ.COM 93

“My Patreon supporters enable me to support my vision as an artist. It’s an important way for me to fund my art, I raise funds lots of different ways to make this ‘art thing’ work. but it’s also driven by bookings and merchandise,” Brandon related. “It’s a very important pillar that helps me deliver intriguing content while reducing the financial burden. Artists should’t starve, so I try to be clever and savvy with my campaigns. Artists today have to evolve and change the conversation about art and its value.” His Patreon posts keep subscribers and patrons engaged, with exclusive insight into his world with regular highlights, like, “Let’s Make a Mess” and “Too Much Tuesday.” He’s also turned his art into a stage show on YouTube. Brandon is currently working on his mythological series, “Gods and Monsters” while he’s also traveling for work. “I would love to work on more music videos, short films, and to break into fashion,” he anticipates. “One of my goals is for my style to be recognizable, no matter the genre. Another dream is to turn my body painting designs into a fashion line. I’m heavily considering a move to Los Angeles to explore this.” The temporary, living nature of body painting means Brandon’s body painting will never hang on a museum’s walls. It’s beauty is fleeting. “When I was a canvas artist it would bother me to let my work go; as a body painter with over 600 bodies completed, watching the art get destroyed is part of the process. I’ve learned, as a body artist, to let go of my work,” Brandon explained. There is a downside: “Cleaning my poor shower,” he laughed. Dear Jock Itch,

ll About Ass … pretty much sums up this edition of Favorite Bitch®! While it’s fun to read about these folks’ dilemmas, let’s keep in mind that we’ve all found ourselves in similar messy situations. Pop open a buttery bag of Orville Redenbacher, grab your cocktail and get ready for another installment of my good ol’ fashioned advice for an ultra-modern world!
Dear Miss Tiger, When my partner and I have sex, he keeps putting multiple fingers inside me. I recently came home early from work and caught him masturbating to a vintage fisting porno! How do I let him know that in no way am I letting him fist me? — Hector Dear Five Finger Discount, Didn’t you see this coming when the mothah started stockpiling the Crisco? Obviously, your papí wasn’t perfecting an award-winning flaky pie crust. NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, I’m considering dropping out of college. I performed really well at first, but I got carried away with all the ass I’m getting. My sex life is awesome. but my grades are for shit. What should I do? — University of Arizona Jock
Darling, raise your right hand and place your middle finger under your nose. Now, take a big whiff, because once you drop out of school, that sniff is the closest you’ll ever get to partaking in never-endinguniversity-boypussy! Bitch, get your education. NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, My boyfriend asked if he could top me. He knew from the jump start that I don’t bottom. Any advice? — Rough Top Dear If You Were THAT Great Of A Top Your Man Wouldn’t Be Trying To Get Inside Your Peaches, And with that being said .... NEXT! Dear Miss Tiger, I’m noticing that my butt isn’t as firm as it used to be. Do you think it turns guys off seeing it jiggle? — Joey D. Dear The Answer Is “Yes,” When booking a cruise, there’s a reason why the lower decks are sold at a discounted rate. Too much motion in the ocean is enough to make anybody seasick! Miss Tiger

ids! They grow up so fast! Just the other day that The Tucson’s Most Eligible Vegan, former ION Arizona model and cover boy Cory Kuehn was go-go dancing on a boy box before he left for the Land of Fruits, Nuts and Vegetables ... Los Angeles! I have good news for you! No more staring at yummy Corkswag’s Instagram baked selfies with those annoying emojis pasted over C his naughty bits. (A) Yep! Dreams really do come true in Hollywood! Cory landed a contract with the legendary Svengali of Smut, none other than Chi Chi LaRue! (B) And he’s ready for the silver screen as “Max Adonis.” He posted that he’s “... versatile and horny AF.” (And that’s a direct quote. The “AF” stands for “Abercrombie E and Fitch” in case you didn’t know.) Swoon! The crème de la crème of Phoenix turned out for Kirby Girls 3 for a show

and exhibition like no other. The scrummy Keith Taylor and his beau Devon Norris (whom I worship from afar) canoodled with Gia DeMilo during the intermission (C). 3-d masterpieces Brandon McGill compared color palettes with everybody’s favorite Ghoul Next Door, Dahli (Jayvonn Monroe), the rumored offspring of Marilyn Manson and Dita Von Teese. (D)
That divoon dish David Perre (E) celebrated his palindromic 22nd birthday with is fans at Club Volt wearing something scanty and scandalous! Just the way we like it! I even saw him eat a cupcake! It doesn’t happen often, but the “Boy of the Minute” has to be that explosive little pop bottle rocket, Alex Cyprus (F). Tell me, is he really everywhere at once, or is there an entire army of Alexes who are omnipresent? And if I know Alex, he’ll be reading this while he sits on the toilet.

ou find yourself in emotionally complicated situations, thanks to Mercury’s meddlesome retrograde ending on April 15. It’s like one long ”Freaky Friday.” Everything seems to be opposite. Electronics make a big SNAFU for everyone. Situations are exaggerated, so don’t plan everything out and you’ll be skipping down the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy. Camaraderie is key. That’s why celebrating Phoenix Pride with friends is extra important. ARIES Mar. 21 - Apr. 20 Manage your energy; feel like exploring? Then climb that mountain! Need to reign it in? Stay home. You will meet three influential people this month. Birthday Rams: you answer a tough question. Consider your answer carefully. You find something you’ve been looking for. TAURUS April. 21 - May 20 Your stamina is extraordinary. You have a high ranking from the Charm Department. Birthdays mean you make a fresh start with a new agenda. One that works. You express yourself in a way that’s, frankly, a little shocking. But we like to be shocked. GEMINI May 21 - June 21 What works for you, and what isn’t working? You’ve been feeling like a square peg in a round hole, but you discover excitement all around you that makes you act super cute. We love it when you act all cute and stuff. CANCER June 22 - July 22 You find yourself pursuing dreams and chasing opportunities. You’re open to all kinds of changes. For once you’re not so stubborn. Oh, come on. You know you’re stubborn, don’t you? You don’t? You do now. LEO July 23 - Aug. 22 You have personal ambitions for success, but for once, it’s not all up to you. Situations and other people dictate your progress. They’re here to help. Think you can cooperate? It’s high time, kiddo.

VIRGO Aug. 23 - Sep. 22 You spend time with family, then with someone sexy where you get all intellectual about Life. Will you come up with any real answers? Nope, but that’s okay. That’s not really why you’re there, now is it? LIBRA Sep. 23 - Oct. 22 Mercury retrograde brings delays and you might lose a few things. Don’t worry. It’s all fixable. When it’s over Venus brings understanding to everything. You look more beautiful than ever! SCORPIO Oct. 23 - Nov.23 Been slacking off? C’mon. Admit it. Now it’s time to put your nose to the grindstone. Show off the glowing, happier “you.” Newfound energy draws others to you. Besides, you’re naturally fabulous. Bossy, sure, but fabulous. SAGITTARIUS Nov. 23 - Dec. 23 You know what April is saying to you? “Commitment.” You’re focused, practical, and organized. A project demands your attention. Open up your purse, because you’re feeling generous. Uh, by the way, can I have some of your money? CAPRICORN Dec. 23 - Jan. 20 It’s all about “Goals.” Maybe it’s starting a hobby, completing chores (because Cappies seem to love chores) or shoring up shaky relationships. Finalize plans. Gain independence. You’re gonna be busy! AQUARIUS Jan. 21 - Feb. 19 Rather than focus on the stupid retrograde (and it’s really lousing things up for you!) let’s focus on the excitement coming after the 15th. Don’t get too pushy, but you’ll still get your way most of the time. That’s most of the time. Not all. Be productive. PISCES Feb. 20 - Mar. 20 Put the spotlight on humanitarian and philanthropic values this month. You’re getting a high rating in “Public Approval” surveys. (That isn’t always the case, and you know it!) You make a wise financial investment that pays off. That’s a shocker!
