TOURNAMENT APPLE

Go Heart! Take Apple!
History of the Apple Invitational Tournament
Sacred Heart Academy, led by Athletic Director Bunny Daugherty, began the Apple Tournament in 1973 and named it in honor of U.S. Field Hockey’s foundress Constance Applebee in commemoration of her 100th birthday. Known as “the Apple” Constance spent her adult life introducing field hockey to young women of all ages and championing it at the collegiate level.

Much like Constance, Bunny Daugherty was intent on creating opportunities for young female athletes. She was instrumental in starting the Apple Tournament and the Louisville Invitational Tournament in basketball. In 2018, nearly 20 years after her death, the KHSAA described Bunny this way, “trailblazer and advocate for girls’ high school sports. Decades of dedication as an athletic director and coach. More than a dozen state championships to her credit. KHSAA Hall of Famer.” The Courier-Journal once called her the Susan B. Anthony of girls’ high school sports in Kentucky.
Bunny’s motto was “Kids + Sports = Fun” and she embodied that spirit for countless athletes throughout her decades at SHA. Bunny coached just about everything and led teams to 13 state titles — golf (5), tennis (5), field hockey (2), and basketball (1).

More than 50 years later we honor the legacy of trailblazing women like Constance and Bunny with the enduring Apple tournament and will continue to advocate for female student-athletes for decades to come.

Welcome to the Ursuline Campus and Sacred Heart Academy for the 53rd annual Apple Tournament! SHA is honored to share this long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics with each of you.
I wish these young women and their coaches the best of luck this season. Being part of a team teaches camaraderie, discipline, selflessness, determination, and grace, both in victory and defeat. May you each find sisterhood and success on and off the field!

Their strong spirits and beautiful smiles continue to bless this field.
Please visit the memorial plaque dedicated to the memory of Lauren and Jenna. Lauren, a field hockey player and team captain, and Jenna, a soccer player and collegiate star, were both graduates of Sacred Heart Academy’s Class of 2001. Lauren and Jenna played on this field as seniors after anxiously awaiting its completion most of their high school careers. Both girls attended the field’s dedication, and Lauren sang solo for the opening National Anthem. During Jenna’s brief returns from college, she continued her training by running laps on this track. Lauren attended Auburn University and Jenna attended the University of Nebraska. Both girls died in their junior year of college at the age of 21 in separate tragedies. Their strong leadership and determination continue to inspire many young players to follow their dreams and be who they are inside.

Wendy Lee Martin Most Valuable Player Award
The SHA Apple Tournament is pleased to present the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, in honor of Louisville field hockey stalwart and inspiration, Wendy Lee Martin.
After playing NCAA Division I basketball at the University of Kentucky (1972-1975), Wendy Lee Martin took the reins of a proud Louisville Collegiate School field hockey tradition in 1981. In her 32-year tenure with Collegiate, she led the Amazon Field Hockey Program to 11 State Championships and coached 6 All-Americans.

In 1993, Wendy and co-author W.F. Axton published the definitive Spalding Sports Series book about the game entitled simply “Field Hockey” which informed and enlightened numerous generations of local coaches, players, and parents.
In 2009, Wendy was diagnosed with breast cancer. She never let that diagnosis stand in her way as she led the Amazons to the KY State Championship game that season. Selected by her peers as the Kentucky Field Hockey Association’s Coach of the Year a record 12 times, in 2002, Wendy was inducted into the Metro Louisville Athletics Hall of Fame. In 2010, she was inducted into the Louisville Collegiate School Athletic Hall of Fame. The Apple Tournament honors Wendy with providing a player in the Varsity Divisions with the Wendy Lee Martin Most Valuable Player Award.
Honoring those in the Fight
Since 2010, the local field hockey community has raised and donated tens of thousands of dollars to local cancer centers and non-profits to honor Wendy and many others affected by cancer, and the Apple Tournament and Sacred Heart Academy are honored to carry on this important tradition.
Recent recipients include:
2014 – James Graham Brown Cancer Center (joint effort by Stick it to Cancer and Apple Tournaments)
2018 and 2019 – Twisted Pink, local non-profit providing funding to metastatic breast cancer research founded by Caroline Johnson, former SHA field hockey parent
2020 – Twisted Pink and ALK Positive
2021 and 2022 – ALK Positive, a patient-driven organization, dedicated to improving the life expectancy and quality of life for all ALK-Positive lung cancer patients worldwide by providing support, empathy, and research funding.
2023 – Twisted Pink and Norton Cancer Institute
