To our friends, neighbors, and fellow cattlemen,

On behalf of the entire family at Kearns Cattle Co., it is our distinct pleasure to welcome you to our 37th Annual Bull Sale!

Since our first sale, our goals have remained steadfast: we strive to produce functional, high-performing cattle that thrive in the real world. This year’s offering of 80+ Simmental and SimAngus bulls represents the very best of our latest calf crop. We’ve focused heavily on the traits that drive profitability—soundness, calving ease, and explosive growth—without sacrificing the maternal quality the Simmental breed is known for.

This year’s offering features over 80 powerhouse yearling bulls that represent the depth and quality we strive for at Kearns Cattle Co. By leveraging the SimAngus advantage, we’ve produced a set that offers the perfect blend of heterosis, carcass quality, and environmental adaptability. This progress is backed by decades of disciplined maternal selection, giving you the reliability and confidence that these bulls will produce not just heavy steers, but a superior set of replacement heifers.

We take great pride in the “Kearns” brand, but we take even more pride in the success of our customers. Whether you’ve been with us since year one or are looking at a Kearns bull for the first time, we appreciate you taking the time to evaluate this year’s offering. The bulls are sorted and ready for your inspection. If you have any questions about the bulls, the pedigrees, or which bull best fits your cow base, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We look forward to seeing you March 5th at the ranch!

Best Regards, Zach

When investing in a herd sire, there are many criteria to consider as that one bull acquisition can impact a program for nearly 20 years when females are retained. If your operation is terminal and you source your replacement females, then it can change the game of the selection in many ways. Kearns Cattle Company is a multi-generational ranching business that has been focused on building cattle that thrive in the western Nebraska ranching environment. The landscape and the weather patterns can be fairly unforgiving for cattle that do not have the innate ability to hustle or the equipment to endure the challenges of the region. Both Tom and Zach, along with the ranch team, have sorted the cattle for several decades, and that is why these cattle are as good as they are.

The outfit has hosted a bull sale for 38 years and has developed a loyal customer base to match the new interest and customers gathered along the way. Stock that bears the Kearns brand have been praised for their elite quality in phenotype, red meat yield, and their ability to cross well with many of the British-based cowherds in the region. Influential herd sires have left the program for employment in some of the most elite SimGenetic and commercial programs throughout the country. The female base is what is so attractive about the operation and the very reason why the cattle are as uniform in quality from one to the next. Cows like CNS Tiara P405, Ford RJ Dolly Y83, CCR Misty May 8014U, and Malsons Savannah 27Y would be responsible for well over half of the females within the barbed wire of the ranch pastures. Those females all left a trail of sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters that dominate the breeding program with quality in look and structural build from the ground up.

Our industry has experienced some of the very best times over the past couple of years. With all classes of cattle experiencing record-setting prices every week, it seems. The cow/calf operator is sitting in the driver’s seat, the backgrounders and cattle feeders are getting their due finally as well, and if it can hold long enough to run over into the harvest and fabrication side, things should be good for the unforeseeable future. Of course, the demand for our exportable product must stay in place, and all points indicate that it should as the demand for the safest and densest consumable protein source continues to rise. The ranchers and cattlemen within the boundaries of the United States are some of the most determined and mindful to continue to produce a product of consistency, palatability, and integrity, and so the quest to tie into the next class of genetics is at an all-time high as well. The desire to inject the perfect blend of end-product yield and marbling is also at a record high due to the premiums that become associated at harvest. It’s truly the satisfaction of knowing that we (U.S. beef producers and feeders) are responsible for the one thing that most people of the world prefer to consume and enjoy as they do.

We promise that this set of bulls will meet the standards of most commercial ranchers and registered breeders alike. Zach continues to study the bulls available for artificial insemination and make the annual sire acquisitions needed to make the natural calves as good or better than the calves resulting from the aggressive embryo program. Rest assured that Zach likes to win, and he likes for those around him to win and be successful as well. We hope that you can join us on March 5th for the annual Kearns Cattle Company Bull Sale. If you should have any questions or need further details on the offering, please reach out to Zach or any of the Innovation AgMarketing team.

Thank you for your interest!

Why SimGenetic Cattle? 2025 Sale Pricing Breakdown

Kearns Cattle Company bulls are affordable!

With extensive use of E.T. and A.I., we are proud to offer many full, 3/4, and 1/2 brothers to provide our customers with a more uniform and consistent product! You will see the direct benefit of uniformity in your calf crops and the added value that they will command!

A Guide to Expected Progeny Differences

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and –5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA EPDs are expressed in:

• Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

• Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

• Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.

• Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.

• Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

• Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.

• Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

• Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

• Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

• Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

• Marbling (MRB): Marbling score.

• Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

• Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.

• All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

• Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.)

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well- conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

L8 was Zach’s preferred selection of the Oak Meadow Farm Production Sale for a $25,000 hammer price. The herd sire will consistently contribute shape and true skeletal width to a set a calves.

• 5218N is from a direct daughter of the late matriarch CCR Ms Misty May 8014U with the presence of the cow maker Profit. This female is of superb udder quality and calf raising merit just like her donor dam.

• He should turn many heads his way on sale day with his physicality and performance measurements. He charts in the top 15% for YG, the top 25% for $GN and DMI, and the better end for WW, YW, Stay, CW, and REA.

KCC1 LAREDO 5206N

52

• A very stout and burly son of OMF Laredo L8 with the maternal influence of SITZ Longevity 556Z. Many will gravitate towards this stud for his mass, volume, and sheer WDA.

• Zach is very fond of his dam’s ability to raise a big, stout calf each year.

• He ranks in the top 10% for Milk and MWW, top 15% for WW, YW, ADG, and CW, top 20% for $GN and TI, top 25% Marb, and the better 35% for API.

KCC1 LAREDO 5182N

GENTLEMAN’S JACK

• This SimGenetic herd sire prospect is from a very proven and productive cow family that has assisted in the construction of several, northern plains seedstock breeding programs. The “Katinka” Angus cow family has been very prevalent over the years in the Thomas and Krebs programs. Troy Thomas sold multiple daughters from his Katinka 3208N donor female that played a major role in building the brand. Zach was fortunate enough to acquire some frozen opportunities from the matriarch in the form of “Broker” daughters.

• The maternal side of this equation comes with a double shot of the JM BF H25 cow family. H25 is responsible for both MR HOC Broker and the maternal great granddam of Ruby/SWC Gentleman’s Jack.

• He ratios 101 for weaning and posts a top 5% value for YG, the top 20% for DMI and REA, and the upper end for $GN and CW.
