MONDAY, MARCH 30, 2026 - 1 P.M. MDT

FIVE STATES LIVESTOCK AUCTION - CLAYTON, NM

WELCOME

FELLOW CATTLE PRODUCERS,

Thank you for your interest in our breeding program and our bulls.

Wow, what a year it has been for the beef business.

High cattle prices like we have never seen in the history of the cattle business, and the experts say it will remain that way for a while.

There has never been a better time to invest in good bulls to improve your cowherd. Bulls should be considered an investment and not just as an expense.

This is a real deep set of bulls, that have been developed on native pasture and fed a good growing ration to display their potential while keeping their future in mind.

We would like to welcome the Krebs family who have 6 bulls in the sale. Ty and Matt are close friends and they have been buying cattle from us since they started with their Hereford Cattle for their kids. The bulls fit right in, carry much of the same bloodlines and have been raised right alongside our bulls.

Thanks to all of friends and neighbors who help make this sale happen.

Finally, a special thanks to the Ted Zieman family for putting in a great set of black baldy replacement heifers in the sale.

If we can be of any assistance to you before the sale just let us know.

Sincerely,

The Copeland & Sons Family

Yield Matters: Positioning for the Future

Today’s U.S. beef industry rewards heavyweight, high-quality carcasses — and producers have responded. Carcass weights are at record highs, and Prime percentages continue to climb. Packers operate with limited chain space and high fixed overhead costs; there are only so many shackles on the rail. When processing capacity is constrained, the most direct way to increase value is to put more pounds on each hook. Bigger carcasses help spread fixed costs and keep plants efficient. At the consumer level, the USDA Quality Grade system works. Prime and Choice consistently deliver a better eating experience, and the market pays for it. Quality Grade will remain an important driver of value. But as the industry has pushed carcass weight and marbling higher, another opportunity has emerged — carcass yield.

Most cattle are marketed on grids that include both Quality Grade and Yield Grade. While Quality Grade effectively predicts eating satisfaction, Yield Grade is much less precise at predicting true red meat yield. Research shows the current USDA Yield Grade explains only 0 to 40% of the variation in actual retail yield. That limited accuracy is one reason Yield Grade premiums and discounts are modest compared to Prime–Choice–Select spreads. When yield cannot be measured precisely, the industry defaults to “make them bigger.” More total pounds help offset uncertainty. However, additional weight late in the feeding period often comes in the form of fat. Today, nearly 30% of fed cattle are Yield Grade 4 or 5 — once considered undesirable, now increasingly common. Producing excess fat without regard to muscle requires additional feed, water, time, and capital. As resources tighten and efficiency matters more than ever, the question becomes clear: are we maximizing true red meat yield, or simply adding fat?

In 2023, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association reconvened a task force to address carcass yield measurement. The group includes packers, feeders, cow-calf producers, branded beef programs, and researchers. Recent work has demonstrated that computed tomography (CT) scanning can accurately measure carcass composition — muscle, fat, and bone — without destroying the carcass (Figure 1). While CT is not practical in-line at commercial speeds, it provides a gold-standard reference to validate new technologies that measure the 3-D shape of carcasses and may predict yield at chain speed. Efforts are also underway to measure the 3-D shape of live cattle using chute-side radar technology, which may help develop a red meat yield trait for inclusion in future genetic evaluation programs. Currently, the Beef Checkoff is supporting a 600-head study evaluating the relationship between CT-determined composition and boxed beef yield. The goal is simple: better measurement leads to better market signals.

U.S. cattlemen have successfully and impressively improved the quality of the products they produce. The next opportunity is improving how we measure and reward true carcass yield. Bulls that sire cattle combining marbling with muscle and compositional efficiency will position commercial cattlemen for long-term profitability.

new technology

WILL CHANGE HOW RED MEAT YIELD IS MEASURED AT HARVEST

Dale Woerner and his team at Texas Tech university have developed 3D technology that looks at muscle shape, width, and dimension to give a more accurate reflection of total red meat yield versus using Rib eye area

Rib eye area measurements and red meat yield are actually drifting more apart according to Texas Tech.

The system we use now is from the 1960s era.

So to make a long story short, MUSCLE MATTERS. Cattle with visual muscle shape may be worth a lot more , perhaps as soon as 3 to 5 years.

THESE ARE THE KIND OF CATTLE WE LIKE AND HAVE BEEN RAISING FOR YEARS.

So buying bulls with width and muscle shape could benefit your bottom line in a few years because you have started ahead of the pack.

HOW MUCH

CAN YOU AFFORD TO PAY FOR A BULL?

The slaughter bull market has been tremendous and many bulls are bringing 3,000 dollars and much more. There has never been a time when trading up to a new young bull has been this easy.

The old time ranchers have always said a new bull is worth 5 steer calves, and then he is paid for in the first year.

With this formula, 5 steers X $2,500 is $12,500 dollars that can be spent on a new bull.

$12,500 for the new bull minus $4,000 salvage on the old one makes your actual purchase only $8,500.

$8,500 divided by 5 years you own the bull is $1,700 a year to use the bull.

If a bull breeds 120 cows in those 5 years the cost per cow bred is only $70.83.

That does not include all of the genetic merit you have purchased with the bull that should increase weaning weights, increase the kind of replacement heifers he produces that also adds lots of dollars to your bottom line.
