The official start of the League year is always an exciting time. Whether you are entering your 30th year or your 1st as a member, there is always a freshness that comes from the start of a new year. There are members beginning in new placements, leadership and committee, and with that comes the opportunity to continue the progress of the previous year or head in new directions. As the 20162017 Board of Directors looks forward to the upcoming year, we are excited to share our areas of focus and goals. With member recruitment underway, an area of interest for the Board is to ensure that we are promoting a League which values diversity and inclusion. The Junior League Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion states that the League welcomes all women who value our mission. It also notes that we are committed to inclusive environments of diverse individuals, organizations and communities. In the upcoming year, the Board will focus on improving how we share this commitment with the community and our membership. Our League has an engaged membership committed to making a positive impact in our community. Combining the core
value of voluntarism with our thriving partnerships in the community, the JLS will continue to do great work. This year, the JLS will begin the work to develop a multi-year plan for community impact. As we grow closer to our 100th year, it will be important to plan for the use of the $100,000 Anniversary Fund. Developing a multi-year community impact plan will help us to focus our effort on the community now and develop a plan for our celebration year. The Holiday Shoppes continues to be a profitable fundraiser for the JLS and it is important to appreciate the success of that event. However, it is mindful to continue to explore additional fundraising efforts in order to increase resources and diversify funding. Building upon the success last year, the wine pull event will be improved to maximize revenue and profit. The goal of this Continued On Page 2

We had a successful Junior League Pure Barre class on Sunday, August 7 at Pure Barre Syracuse in DeWitt. Seven prospective members joined us for some lifting, toning and burning followed by snacks and conversation. Everyone had a great time and was sore the next day!

Harbor Run 5K, Sunday, August 28, 8:00-11:00 a.m. We will have a JLS table and will help with handing out water, medals for the fun run, and cheering on the runners! Event is being offered jointly from the Membership and Community Collaborations committees so feel free to bring along a friend who may be interested in learning more about the League. JLS After Dark happy hour at Aster Pantry and Parlor on Thursday, September 8 at 6:00 p.m.: Join us for an evening of friendship and fun! JLS members, bring a friend to show her the League in an informal setting. New member social at the GMM on Tuesday, September 13 (5:30 p.m.). There will be a new member social before the GMM and then prospective members are invited to stay for the GMM to learn more about the Junior League.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
The Education & Training Committee had their first committee meeting on Tuesday, August 9. We did a lot of brainstorming about speakers, ice breakers, annual dinner venues and caterers for the Holiday Shoppes party. We will be meeting again on Tuesday, September 7. COMMUNITY The Community Collaborations team met over the summer to plan for the 2016-2017 year. We have landed on the below goal for the JLS year: The goal of the Community Collaborations committee is to support at-risk families in atrisk situations. Our focus areas include:
Women & Children Hunger Education We are planning events with many of our community partners including: Westside Resource Center, Rescue Mission, Blodgett School, Dorothy Day House, My Sister’s Closet and many more. We plan to highlight our calendar of events at the September GMM so members can plan well in advance. More to come on community collaborations.
SUSTAINER NEWS Sustainers are continuing their monthly R&R events at some traditional favorite venues and some new locations. R&Rs will be scheduled on the third Wednesday or Thursday of the month. Sustainers are encouraged to watch for email blasts with the day and location each month. If you’ve missed R&Rs because you don’t get the email blasts, please get in touch with Linda Dombrow (447-9928 or lindadombrow@yahoo.com). The Sustainer Dinner and (optional) Golf Outing is set for Monday, September 19 at Drumlins East (private course) Country Club. Golf is at 4 p.m.
Cash Bar at 6 p.m. Dinner at 7 p.m. We ask for an RSVP by September 14. Invitations have gone out in email blasts and US mail. Sustainers who have not received an invitation should get in touch with Linda. Plans for the annual Sustainer Pie Making will be underway soon.
