Save the Date for the 19th Annual Holiday Shoppes November 14 – 16th at the NYS Fairgrounds Horticulture Building! The event is only a few weeks away and the Steering Committee is working hard, organizing what will hopefully be the best Holiday Shoppes yet. Pre-sale tickets for League members are $5 this year. Price Chopper pre-sale tickets will remain at $6, and general admission will remain at $8. The Steering Committee is counting on the support of members to sell tickets and to staff the event. The ticket and staffing requirements remain the same for Active and Associate members. Members must sell 5 tickets at $5.00 each. The one five-hour shift remains the same. A few incentives have been created for members who sell more than the minimum requirement. Any member who sells ten tickets at a value of $5 per ticket will attend the 2014 Holiday Party at no cost (beverages not included). The three members who sell the most tickets (minimum of thirty tickets sold) at a value of $5 per ticket will receive complimentary dues for the 2015 – 2016 JLS League year. More of a reason to encourage people to buy tickets from you! So please sell, sell, sell! Put flyers up. Send out emails. Ask your friends. Help us make this a successful event! We currently have 103 merchants attending and 141 booths filled, and the number keeps growing! Of these booths, we have 77 returning merchants and 26 new

merchants. Some our returning merchants include our old favorites such as A La Maison, The Chocolate Pizza Company, Lockwood Lavender Farm and Olive on Brooklea. We are also excited to introduce some of our new merchants such as Kinderling Wood, Mohawk Quilts, Simple Roast Coffee, Suprenant’s Berry Farm, and WRKDesigns (one of our own JLS members!). If you or someone you know is interested in having a booth at the Holiday Shoppes, please e-mail our Merchant Co-Chairs Marisa Montreal or Whitney Browne, or download an application from our website. Raffle prizes and event sponsors are being finalized and will be announced soon, but we can confirm that we have secured Cazenovia Jewelry, Mirbeau Spa, and Stickley, Audi & Co. As always, we will be doing some heavy advertising for the event. Keep your eyes out for our billboards located on 205 North State Street, 901 E. Genesee Street, 4938 W. Genesee Street, and 650 Midler Avenue. Stop, take a picture, and post on Facebook if you can! We will have commercials running on News Channel 9 and YNN throughout the

weekend of the event, and radio ads on Y94FM and 93Q! The Communications Council is working hard to promote Holiday Shoppes through all of our social media outlets. Member Development The two “New Member” recruitment events held at The Blue Tusk were a huge success. We met a wonderful group of ladies that are interested in becoming members of the Junior League of Syracuse. The first official ‘New Member’ meeting was be held at the end of October. At the meeting we gave a brief overview of the Junior League of Syracuse; provided information about the upcoming year and had a Q&A session. We are excited for the new member year to officially begin!

On Thursday, October 9th, a cozy group of Sustainers met in the JLS Ballroom to hear a presentation by Nancy Fasoldt, former editor at the Post-Standard. Nancy helped us log-in, register for, and learn to navigate the e-Post Standard. While we each thought we knew how to read an online paper, Nancy taught us the ins and outs of our local daily and made it fun along the way. Nancy is happy to do another presentation for us if there is interest. Please let me know.
Holiday Shoppes is upon us! Please consider volunteering your time if you are able and of course plan to do some shopping while you are there. Community Collaborations The Community Council has had a busy month and continues to meet with agencies to create opportunities to share the JLS antiHuman Trafficking message. The Community Collaborations Chairs, Cheryl Saidel and Beth Edwards, are refining the year’s calendar with opportunities for members to volunteer at GMM’s and collaboration events. The committee planned the Recreation Drive, Squash Picking for Assumption Food Pantry, and packaging of 25 first aid kits for Catholic Charities in October. Committee members are also excited to volunteer for Holiday Shoppes in November. Stay tuned for more details for December activities, including the Dorothy Day Holiday Brunch!
This month, the Public Policy committee met to discuss JLS’s vote for the NYSPAC issue for the year. In addition, Public Policy Chair, Kerry Buske Dominski and Nicole Hoy are planning to attend the NYSPAC conference in Albany on November 8. We are excited to send them and learn of their findings when they return. Megan Husted, Community VP, and Heather Ford Wallace, President, have been representing JLS on AJLI’s Issue Based Community Impact transformation initiative since its August commencement. The initiative is a great learning opportunity on building strategic community impact and membership capabilities. JLS needs to grow this team, so if you are interested in at-

2015 – 2016 Phase One Placement Paperwork Attention all Active members- it’s time to complete your Phase One paperwork! The Nominating Committee uses Phase One placement paperwork to begin building the leadership teams for the 2015 – 2016 League year. If you’re interested in taking on a leadership position, this is the perfect opportunity to review the list of open positions for next year and inform your Nominating Advisor of your interest, so that you can be considered during the slating process. Be on the lookout for a special email blast from the JLS Office on Friday, October 31. This year’s Phase One paperwork will be distributed electronically (no paper copies will be sent via US Mail). In addition to moving to an electronic version, the Phase One Paperwork features the following updates: • The paperwork will seek input for leadership positions only - interest in committee placement will be captured in the Phase
Two paperwork in the spring. • Actives will be asked to indicate their interest in leadership positions with a check mark, instead of ranking first, second and third choices. • A “No Leadership” section has been added for Actives to indicate that they are not interested in leadership or would like to change their member status in 2015 – 2016. • A more detailed “Member Recommendation” form has been added to capture recommendations of fellow members for leadership positions. Please send the completed electronic file directly to your Nominating Advisor via email; or if you are unable to email, please mail to the JLS Office. Phase One paperwork is due back to your Nominating Advisor no later than December 1, 2014.
Public Policy: JLS HT Taskforce The Junior League of Syracuse is still actively participating in the Central New York Human Trafficking Task Force. The task force is led by Captain Mark Lincoln of the New York State Police and is composed of law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and human interest groups throughout the Central New York Region. The CNY HT Task Force meets every other month in Syracuse or Utica. This past month Task Force received an informational seminar from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children offers resources for any type of crime committed against a child. The Center has regional offices in California, New York, Florida, and Texas. The Child Victim Identification Program assists state and federal law enforcement agencies with the identification of children victimized in child porn. There is a congressionally authorized CyberTipline to report Child Sexual Exploitation. For instance, if someone reports an AD that is exploiting a child on Backpage. com to the CyberTipline, an analyst will thoroughly investigate the AD to determine where it came from, cross references with other Ads, hopefully identify the child, and link it back to local jurisdiction for the local police to apprehend the suspect. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children also has a Sex Trafficking Team. The Child Sex Trafficking Team provides comprehensive analytical services to law enforcement and helps link cases of possible child sex trafficking to missing child cases known to NCMEC. Governor Cuomo Signs Legislation Protecting Young Victims of Human Trafficking
Albany, NY (October 16, 2014) Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed legislation to protect young victims of human trafficking by granting new protections to those seeking to rebuild their lives, and gives the courts new authority to ensure these victims receive the help and treatment that they need. The bill creates a new sealing provision that makes sure records may only be unsealed for use in cases against the victim’s trafficker, instead of their history being found years later by a potential employer. Additionally, a judge may now grant special “youthful offender” status to teens previously convicted of a crime, and may conditionally classify a case not criminally but as a “person in need of services.” “These new protections build upon our work to combat human trafficking in New York by providing more tools to help victims escape their circumstances and to get a fresh start,” Governor Cuomo said. “I’m proud to sign this legislation today and I applaud Senator Lanza and Assembly Member Paulin for their hard work on this critically important issue.” Under the new law (S.6840/A.8749-A), all records relating to the 16- or 17-year old must be sealed to protect against a future employer finding out about the victim’s history, with the provision to only unseal them if they are needed in a case against the victim’s trafficker. The second part to this bill classifies vic-

tims as sexually exploited children rather than adults, and automatically grants them with youthful offender status in the event of a guilty plea or jury verdict to ensure they do not have a future criminal record. It makes clear they may get this status regardless of whether or not they have been previously convicted of a crime or received a separate youthful offender status for another crime. Finally, cases involving 16- and 17-year olds will not be immediately classified as criminal, and they will be given access to essential and alternative services such as housing, crisis intervention programming, and community-based programming. Previous to this bill, there was no way to ensure that the charged youth actually utilized the services given to them. Now, if they do not comply with the alternative conditions, the judge may convert the case back to a criminal one— providing a check to the judge to ensure the services are being used. Senator Andrew Lanza said, “Here in New York, thousands of innocent people are bought and sold like property each year. Most of the victims are young women who have had their childhood stolen and in many cases their lives left in ruin because of the vicious and vile practice of trafficking human beings for sex. This bill will provide 16- and 17-year old trafficking victims with the ability to escape from their traffickers and rebuild their lives. I thank Governor Cuomo for signing this important legislation into law and Assemblywoman Paulin for her leadership.” Assemblywoman Amy Paulin said, “This law is one more important step in what has been an ongoing struggle to end human trafficking in New York. Far too many of our children are being exploited in abhorrent ways, victimized to meet the growing demand of a massive underground commercial sex industry. We need to continue to fight for these youth and provide them with a chance to rebuild their lives. This law will help us do that.”
