2017 SPIRIT OF MARY HARRIMAN COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Mary Harriman Community Service Award celebrates a woman of outstanding leadership in the Junior League of Syracuse who has used her talents and resources to improve the social and economic conditions of others and who exemplifies the Junior League mission and vision. She has made a positive impact in her league and her community, and her volunteer work continues the tradition of Mary Harriman. Our 2017 honoree, Mary Pat Oliker, indeed epitomizes the spirit of Mary Harriman. In addition to her work as member or leader of several JLS committees, Mary Pat served as JLS President during the 1981-82 year. In 1982, she became Director and later Vice President of Human Resources at Upstate Medical University where she served as the Chief Human Resources Officer for 25 years. From 1989 through 2005, Mary Pat also held an appointment as an adjunct professor in the Public Administration program (MPA) of the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. Although she ‘officially’ retired in October 2007 after a 40 year career in higher education and healthcare human resource management, she returned to Upstate in November 2011 to work with the Foundation for Upstate and the campaign for the new Upstate Cancer Center. She continues to serve on a part-time schedule as a Development Officer with the Upstate Foundation. Mary Pat’s community service activities in addition to the Junior League of Syracuse have included leadership positions and service on the Board of Regents of Le Moyne College, United Way of Central New York, the WCNY Board of Trustees, CNY Occupational Health Clinical Center, Syracuse Community Health Center, the NYS Commission on Judicial Conduct – Grievance Committee, the Volunteer Center, Inc., Syracuse Opera Company, the Century Club of Syracuse and the Alzheimer’s Association. Currently, Mary Pat continues her service to the community as President of the Syracuse Garden Club and on the Advisory Council of OASIS in Central New York. In both her professional and volunteer lives, Mary Pat is an excellent role model for us all.
FUND DEVELOPMENT The Junior League is counting down to our spring fundraiser, the second annual wine pull, Corks, Forks, Brews and Chews! This year’s event is being held on May 11 from 6pm-9pm at OneGroup Center, 706 N. Clinton St. The event is open to members and the public. Bring your friends for a fun evening of food and drinks. Admission to the event is $20 and will include delicious food and one drink voucher. There will be many chances to win great raffle prizes and delicious wine! Try your luck in the wine pull-for $10/ ticket you have the chance to win a high end bottle of wine. Everyone walks away with at least a bottle of wine, even if you don’t pull an expensive one! Raffle tickets will be available for $20 with the opportunity to win some great baskets from Empire Brewery and Sky Armory, among others! There will be live entertainment by Dick Ford and a cash bar. We are excited for everyone to join us in helping us raise money to continue our impactful efforts in the Central New York Community. Mary Harriman Enters the Women’s Hall of Fame! In the spirit of the Mary Harriman award here is a past article that was written by AJLI on October 2015. This athlete became a world class figure skater after overcoming polio. This woman promised her dying sister she would help find a way to eradicate breast cancer. This dance entrepreneur’s pioneering style and drive transformed modern dance. This lawyer’s work has affected virtually every major law of importance to women and girls in the U.S. for more than 40 years. This author’s groundbreaking work on the image of women in advertising as well as critical studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising changed the way we think of media manipulation. Those five women and four others form the class that Mary Harriman joins as 2015 inductees to the National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY, the birthplace of the American Women’s Rights Movement. (See full list with bios here.) This is a great and timely honor for a remarkable woman whose life in public service started as an 18-year-old debutante in New York City and ended, with her untimely death at 53, as one of the highest ranking women in the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mary Harriman (listed under her married name Mary Harriman Rumsey in the NWHF induction) joins fellow Junior League members Eleanor Roosevelt and Sandra Day O’Connor, who were earlier inductees into the NWHF. Mary Harriman’s achievements have also been recognized by the National Women’s History Museum. The National Women’s Hall of Fame is the nation’s oldest membership organization dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the achievements of great American women. It was created in 1969 in Seneca Falls by a group of local women and men who believed that contributions of American women deserved a permanent home in the small village where the fight for women’s rights began. The 2015 Induction Ceremony was held October 2-4, 2015 in Seneca Falls.

COMMUNITY National Volunteer Week April 2017 This year, in honor of National Volunteer Week, Community Collaborations Committee put together a week full of great volunteer opportunities. In doing this, we were able to engage league members and impact the community. Over the course of the week, we volunteered at five different places with more than six different organizations. Our impact on the community reached nearly 220 people (more if they have families) and hundreds of smiles we put on people’s faces from our cookies. Here is a recap of our experiences:
trash, donating to a local Rescue Mission, baking cookies, etc. We did offer an alternative of baking cookies to then be donated to the Samaritan Center soup kitchen. We were overwhelmed by the amount of cookies that were received. Approximately seven members baked over 10 dozen cookies.
First Aid Kits with Congolese Refugees:
Assemble and Learn for Vera House
JLS members assembled and delivered 48 bags containing first aid items and poison control information to the Congolese community during a reception on Sunday, April 23, 2017. Kaelyn Tooley, RN, FNP-C explained the uses of the items through a Congolese interpreter. Refreshments were provide and a question and answer period followed. Everyone learned something that day!
#JLSMyMonday Our second annual #JLSMyMonday, members were encouraged to volunteer on their own or do something that impacts their community. Examples include picking up 4 | The Junior League of Syracuse, Inc. | The NOTES | May 2017
JLS members assembled 20 toiletry kits for the residents of Vera House, mainly for those who arrive with nothing. Kits included deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, combs, etc. After assembling the kits, Rose from Vera House spoke to the members about what the community needs are and what Vera House is able to offer for those community members in need.
STEM at Danforth Middle School As usual, this signature STEM event went over very well. The theme of this year’s STEM event, a gathering of 45 6th grade middle school girls, was “Medical Community”. Our main speaker was Dr. Jocellie Marquez, in addition we
had a veterinarian, pharmacists, Crouse Hospital, SUNY Upstate, an EMT/Ambulance and medical manufacturing. Students were able to walk from station to station to learn about all of these careers, and the path to achieve them. Breakfast was provided by Danforth while lunch was provided by the league.
Little White House of Hope Book Nook Restock
During last year’s National Volunteer week, members built a book nook at LWHH. This year we returned to restock the nook and donate two comfortable floor bags for reading. While we showed them all of the new reading options, we also engaged the nearly 20 kids in crafts and snacks. As we helped everyone make windsocks and butterflies, it was a delight to see them so engaged and happy. The great thing about this community partner is that the kids are always overjoyed at these events, no matter what we choose to do - a real favorite!

MEMBERSHIP The New Member Class has had a great year. We had a successful evening of “Speed Dating” in March to learn about the variety of committees and leadership opportunities the league has to offer. A special shout out to Linda Dombrow, Sue Shubmehl, Rea Carver, Anna O’Neil, Marisa Montreal, Jessica Murray, Kate Zwecker, and Lindsey Yonko-Gardner who represented their committees and/or leadership role. In April, we had a wonderful time at Karen Krogman-Daum’s home as we continued to build relationships and learn about the league. Thank you to Jackie Azbill, Julianna Hebert, Anna O’Neil, Kate Zwecker, and Jenny Jackson Donahoe who represented the Board and Nominating Advisors as they were able to continue to get to know members of the provisional class. We are excited to announce that Stephanie, Yolanda, Courtney, Tiffany, Julie, Amy, Jennifer, Linzy, Liz, Brittany, and Whitney have all completed their provisional year and will be welcomed to the league at the May GMM.

SUSTAINER NEWS Thanks to Terri Russo and Barb Stratton for hosting our March R&R at Coleman’s on Tipp Hill in Syracuse. Although we missed the St. Pat’s festivities, the group had a pleasant evening. As you can see on the front page, Mary Pat Oliker has been selected as recipient of the 2017 Spirit of Mary Harriman Award. Thank you to the selection committee for their thoughtful work and congratulations to Mary Pat. Sustainer of the Year will be announced at the Annual dinner in June.
