PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the 2016-2017 League year comes to a close, it is important to take a moment to celebrate and to thank members for another great year. I am so proud of what the membership has accomplished and I couldn’t be more grateful to have served as President. The year kicked off with a full summer of recruitment and social events. Thanks to the individuals working on the Membership Council for helping to keep us connected during the summer and for developing new ways to invite interested women to learn about the League. Thanks to the committee members who worked with our new members throughout the year to help them understand and internalize our mission and history within the community. Thanks to others on the Membership Council who supported this same growth within the active membership through education and training opportunities including GMMs and sectionals. Thank you to the members who contributed to the accomplishments of the Communications Council. The creation of the communication request form was a huge step in simplifying the steps to promote League events and activities inside and outside the JLS through PR efforts and our website(s). Getting the word out is only half the challenge, though. Thank you to the members on this council who brought their creativity and design skills to make our social media presence, The NOTES, and the weekly blasts absolutely beautiful. It is through all of these efforts that we are able to keep the membership and the community informed and engaged. My sincerest appreciation for the members who worked on Community Council. This year, the Community Council focused efforts toward addressing local poverty and at-risk families. The members on this Council worked hard to provide monthly volunteer opportunities and a full schedule for National Volunteer Week. Thanks to this group for being responsive to member feedback and adapting their planning based on days and times the membership reported work best. It is through the work of this group that we are able to strengthen our relationships with local agencies to make a difference in the lives of individuals in our local community. Without the efforts of the members working on Fund Development Council, we would not be able to support our organization to continue its good work. The Holiday Shoppes had another wonderful year with 120 vendors and over 5000 attendees. Improvements made to the layout, decorations, and the inclusion of delicious food trucks helped to make a 20-plus year event feel fresh and new! Fund Development members also focused on increasing the success of our new wine pull fundraiser. Through the use of a new location and donations from local business and restaurants, this group was able to make big enhancements to the event and improve attendance, while reducing the cost. These efforts have continued to build the groundwork for a sustainable second fundraiser. continued from cover My thanks to the Sustainers. You are a strong support for the JLS and it is wonderful to have such a large group that is still committed to engage with the League and serving serve our local community. This year, Sustainers baked over 65 pies in the longstanding annual pie baking tradition benefiting the Rescue Mission. Sustainers also held a Lunch ‘n Learn event, this year at the Food Bank of Central New York. Sustainers came together throughout the year to celebrate commitment to the community and to each other at social events including the Sustainer Golf & Dinner Outing, Sustainer Cocktail Party, and Sustainer R&Rs. Finally, we all look forward to celebrating this year’s Sustainer of the Year and Spirit of Mary Harriman Community Leadership Award honorees later this month at the JLS’ Annual Dinner. Thank you to the Sustainers for continuing to make the JLS strong! Thanks to Nominating for working hard to carefully and thoughtfully identify members to fill our leadership roles and committees. In addition, thank you all for taking on the responsibilities of Placement and finding ways this can improve the nominating process. The combination of Phase I and II paperwork streamlined the process and made submitting interest and intentions much easier. However, the work of Nominating is not only leadership nomination and committee placement. Thank you for the yearlong efforts to build relationships between advisors and members to support and develop individuals in the League. Many thanks to the Board for balancing time between support of the Councils and strategic planning as Board members. Thank you specifically to the members of the Board who do not oversee a Council as this work often goes on in the “background” of the League. However, I assure you it does not go unnoticed so thank you for all your hard work. As we all know, the JLS is a volunteer organization. It only succeeds through the commitment of women to give their time, energy, effort, and in some ways, even their hearts. This commitment comes along with all the other responsibilities of life. In this year, members have grown their families, changed jobs, lost loved ones, finished school, and a variety of other life milestones along with the challenge of balancing a regular day. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for continuing to place the Junior League of Syracuse among those priorities. It is only through that balance that we are able to continue impacting the lives of both our members and the members of our community.

PRESIDENT’S WELCOME 2017-2018 WELCOME TO A NEW JUNIOR LEAGUE OF SYRACUSE YEAR!
I am both excited and honored that you have chosen me to lead the League on its journey to further its mission and vision. The Junior League of Syracuse has such a rich history in the community and I am looking forward to helping the membership to move that forward. We continue to collaborate with area nonprofits that we have either helped to start or collaborated with in the past such as Vera House. We have forged many new relationships in the community including West Side Resource Center and It’s About Childhood and Family, Inc, as we continue on the path of community improvement. My hope for this year for all of us, both active and sustainer, is to find again what brought each of us to the League. I truly would like for us to meet every member where they are in their life and to realize we have not all decided to join the Junior League of Syracuse for the same reason. I intend to bring different opportunities to members to help them meet their own needs and with the help of AJLI, educate membership on ways we can achieve this. I believe the keys for us to succeed are communication and connection. Two things I would love to work on this year. We are stronger together and need each other to help move the League’s mission and vision forward. I want you to know that I am here for you, just a text, call or email away. I promise you I won’t know all the answers but I will find them out for us. Join me for a great year with even greater rewards both you personally and for the community.

FUND DEVELOPMENT 2ND ANNUAL CORKS, FORKS, BREWS AND CHEWS SPRING FUNDRAISER We would like to thank everyone that came out and supported our spring fundraiser! The event was a HUGE success! The evening was filled with good food, good music and great people. Attendance was up from last year. A thank you goes out to OneGroup for hosting the event, Diamond Catering, Bull N’ Bear, Mitsuba, Costco, Freedom of Espresso and Spaghetti Warehouse for supplying the delicious food, and our wonderful raffle donors, Empire Brewery, Jefferson-Clinton Hotel, Mirbeau Inn and Spa, Chris Murray Photography, Feldmeier Equipment, Chocolate Pizza Co., Essentially Good, Mackenzie-Childs, Olive on Brooklea, Onondaga Beverage, Pure Barre Syracuse, Sweet on Chocolate and Syracuse Yoga. Thank you to all the league members, including the fund development committee and the executive board, that donated their time and resources to making this event the best it could be. Past President’s Luncheon This years luncheon was held at Strada Mia in Syracuse. Thirteen Past Presidents, as well as current President Cathy Dotterer, President Elect-Elect Jessica Murray and myself were in attendance. Cathy spoke about the amazing women we have in the League and the trials of losing our office manager. She spoke of her plan as President to allow the members the autonomy to fulfill their placements. I spoke about the Member Centric vision I have for our League, following along with AJLI guidance. My goal for the new league year is to I am to be helping our League to move forward our mission and to provide opportunities to members to help keep them engaged. Working on engagement and retention are two of many parts of being a member centric organization. The Presidents that were at the luncheon spanned many years with 1981-1982 being the earliest date. I want to thank the ladies for being so welcoming and willing to share sage advice on how to navigate my upcoming year as President. Thank you all who took time out of their busy lives to join us. We missed the ones unable to attend due to previous commitments.

SUSTAINER NEWS At our April 20 Lunch and Learn, organized by Jeanne Jackson, Sustainers learned about the good work and amazing multi-county operation of the Central New York Food Bank. Attendees brought several bags of staples and paper goods to donate. A week later, on April 27, 32 Sustainers – many with spouses alongenjoyed a pleasant evening at the annual Sustainer Cocktail Party. A big Junior League THANK YOU to our hostess Judy Winslow and her husband John for hosting the party. Please join us at the June 13 Annual Dinner to celebrate our Spirit of Mary Harriman Community Service Award honoree, Mary Pat Oliker, and our Sustainer of the Year to be announced that evening.

COMMUNICATIONS Wow! The calls from Communications to the membership to help spread the word about the JLS’ spring activities including National Volunteer Week and Corks, Forks, Brews & Chews were met with tremendous enthusiasm. Members’ social media engagement with these opportunities made a huge difference in helping raise awareness of these events! Numerous members shared their participation in National Volunteer Week on social media by posting throughout the week of April 23-29 about the JLS and their volunteer efforts. Over a dozen members took a photo of their #JLSMyMonday project - including cookie baking, clothing and household items collection and donation, and more - and shared with their friends and family on Facebook. Small engagement actions like liking, commenting, or sharing a post, RSVPing to a Facebook event, or tagging the JLS in your post plays a huge role in raising visibility on social media of our activities.
