In honor of our 95 years as an organization, we’re asking ALL levels of membership to donate 95 minutes of their time. We have set up six volunteer opportunities, over a 95 hour span, that each member can participate in.

95 for 95 is a membership project, designed to increase JLS visibility in the community, recruit new members, and increase member participation and excitement about the year ahead, all while bettering the local community! Beginning on Thursday October 1st, through Sunday October 4th, the following projects are planned: Thursday 10/1/15: 5:30 p.m. -- Dorothy Day House. Dinner and game night for residents. Donation needs - yoga pants in all sizes. Friday 10/2/15: 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. -Rescue Mission. Serving a meal. Saturday 10/3/15: 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. -Westside Family Resource Center. Halloween Kids Crafts and Snacks. Member’s kids welcome (ages 5+). Saturday 10/3/15: 12 p.m. - 1 p.m. -- Chadwick Residence. Tour, healthy meal preparation with residents. Crafts with resident children. Sunday 10/4/15: 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. -- Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Kids Crafts. Sunday 10/4/15: 4:30 p.m. - 6 p.m. -- Men’s Shelter. Tour, serve a hot meal. Donation needs - mens socks. Each member is encouraged to sign up for one of the outlined projects as their 95 minute donation. Members can sign up by using the JLS website. HOLIDAY SHOPPES UPDATE
Community Collaborations plans to continue the “bag stuffing” prior to GMMs for a variety of community organizations throughout the year.
WE ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE DETAILS OF OUR ANNUAL HOLIDAY SHOPPES EVENT!
In addition, we are looking forward to future Collaborations with the Little White House of Hope, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and many other community organizations. We will be providing more information about upcoming collaborations in the BLAST, and at the GMMs. We encourage all members to “step out of their comfort zone” and join with us for some meaningful and significant volunteer opportunities. Also, we will again be sponsoring the STEM event at Danforth School in April 2016. We will need volunteers willing to present to the eighth graders at Danforth. Volunteers should be able to man a table from approximately 9 a.m. until noon on Friday, April 1, 2016 and be able to represent the area of SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, or MATH in a professional or educational capacity. We will also be encouraging corporate sponsorships and corporate tables from local technology companies. Please help us to bring the exciting world of STEM to one of the neediest schools in the city of Syracuse! If you can volunteer, or know someone who may be appropriate, please let us know!

Reminder about membership requirements: Members must work one 5-hour shift during Holiday Shoppes. Members must sell 5 tickets @ $5.00 each. Members who sell 10 tickets @$5.00 each will receive free admission to the holiday party (excluding drinks). The top 3 members who sell the most tickets (minimum sold of 30 tickets) will receive free dues. Tickets and Staffing forms will be available at the GMM’s. Any member who needs to purchase tickets outside of the GMM’s can contact Dawn. Please try to re-sell your tickets to other members of the community before the weekend of the event, because we would like to get an even higher attendance number than last year, and our JLS members are the best advocates for our event! In addition to all of our returning merchants, we have a many new vendors participating in this year’s event. We are still accepting merchants, and we love to have new merchants sign up! If you know of anyone who would consider being a merchant or a sponsor for our event, please have them contact Julianna Hebert (juliannahebert7@gmail.com) or Marisa Montreal (marisaregina16@yahoo.com). SUSTAINER ANNUAL PIE MAKING Our annual pie making event will be held again this year at the Blessed Sacrament Parish Center, in Eastwood, on Saturday, December 5, from 9 a.m. - Noon. Come and enjoy some holiday service to benefit the Rescue Mission and reconnect with your JLS Sustainer friends. Watch your mail for an invitation. RECRUITING UPDATE
MY SISTER’S CLOSET
Thank you to all members who have helped with recruitment so far this year. We have had 3 successful events throughout September:
Members donated TWO FULL car loads of professional women’s clothing to My Sister’s Closet, which is a program supported by the YWCA located in the Almus Olver Tower, on Burt St., in Syracuse.
- Owera Winery: 3 potential members attended. - Blue Tusk Mixer: 11 potential members attended. - NY State Fair: 15 potential members expressed interested. We will be having additional recruitment events but it is not required to go to an event to be a new member. If you know someone who would like to join the new member class, we will be having our first meeting on October 27th, at The Junior League Office, at 6:30 p.m. We need everyone’s help with recruitment!! Currently there are 55 women, some with families, that utilize the YWCA residence program and benefit from the clothing. My Sister’s Closet encourages the women to dress more professionally to help increase their self esteem and to boost their confidence. The clothing is also used primarily when dressing for interviews and job placements. Thank you to all the members who donated. All the dresses, sweaters, shirts, pants, shoes, jackets, scarves and accessories will help make a difference in these women’s lives!

AJLI FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE Recently Cathy Dotterer and Jackie Azbill had the pleasure of attending the AJLI Fall Leadership Conference in New Orleans. The following is their recap: Fall Leadership is a 2-day conference focused on addressing topics relevant for the President-Elect and President-Elect-Elect positions. The event was amazing, covering everything from time management strategies, to by-laws and policy development. In addition, there were several sessions informing us about new developments at AJLI; such as the competency model, updates on the transformation rollout, and the implementation of the Diversity and Inclusion Commitment Statement. We learned so much in such a short time and we are looking forward to bringing back some best practices and creative ideas to the JLS! In addition to the structured schedule, we were also able to forge new friendships with other amazing League women. We listened to some jazz with JL of Reading, PA, had great conversations and lunch with JL of Evansville, IN, and enjoyed a wonderful dinner and brainstorming session with JL of Rochester, NY. We walked around a fabulous city, ate fantastic food at local hangouts, and even shared drinks with the President of the New Orleans Chamber of Commerce. Did I mention we ate amazing food?? Beignets, anyone… We had the pleasure of hearing about NOLA 10 years after Katrina and the generous work of JL New Orleans and countless other Leagues that answered the call for help. Overall, this has been a wonderful learning experience not only at the conference but in general. One of the most unexpected pleasures of the trip was a conversation we had with our taxi driver who was a refugee from the Middle East and the struggles of his family since the move. It brought back
the fact how we can impact other’s lives with even the smallest of gestures. Cathy and Jackie thank you for this learning opportunity!

MEETING BRIEFS August Board Meeting Briefs (8/18/15) Topics Discussed: - Changing community co-chairs to 2 years with overlapping co-chairs. - STEM Budget. - STEM volunteer group will be formed in October to begin preparations for the STEM event. - ODI attendees will present their experiences when they come back at a GMM. - This will be the 20th Anniversary of The Junior League of Syracuse Holiday Shoppes. - Holiday Shoppes fund development: Contact Christie Novak if you have ideas of potential sponsors. - 95 for 95: League is asking the members to volunteer for at least 95 minutes in celebration of the 95th Anniversary of the League (look for more information in the Blasts about the events from October 1-4, 2015). - Members: Remember to sign in at all League events. The JLS GMM was held at The Junior League office (ballroom) in Syracuse, NY. President Jenny Jackson Donahoe called the meeting to order at 6:29 p.m. Mission and Vision Read by Cathy Dotterer. - Guest Speakers: Kate Holmes and Mr. Mohamed, from the Northside CYO on North Salina Street. • A refugee resettlement center for families with refugee status. • Education programs available for adults, including language instruction, citizenship information, and employment training. • Children programs available for children waiting to get registered into school district; Upon completion, they are given school supplies and shoes. • Mr. Mohamed shared his positive experience he has with the Northside CYO. • First Aid Kits prepared prior to the GMM are used for new families that come into the center - Medical department available. - JLS Board Introduction. - Nominating Advisors Introduction. - Recruitment event at Sharkey’s scheduled for 9/22; new member class will begin 10/27. - PR: Goal is to update JLS brochures, get more media coverage, and use social media effectively. - Holiday Shoppes: 104 vendors as of 9/8/15.

MARY HARRIMAN TO BE INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S HALL OF FAME The Founder of The Junior League, Mary Harriman, has been chosen for induction into the National Women’s Hall of Fame on October 3, 2015, in Seneca Falls, NY; the birthplace of the American Women’s Rights Movement. Mary, the daughter of Union Pacific Railroad titan and financier E. H. Harriman, used her life of privilege as a platform for social reform and social activism to pioneer what we now call The Junior League. Mary’s ideas began to take shape when attending a lecture about the growing Settlement Movement. Mary was impressed with the College Settlement in New York City, where college graduates and students lived among the immigrant population to learn about their problems and needs. Mary then brought together nine additional young women, and that group of 10 composed a Statement of Purpose: that each year’s group of young women would be organized to contribute to the community. 80 young women joined the first year, eager to enrich their own lives by becoming involved in improving social conditions in their city. The Statement of Purpose noted that “the settlement movement is one of the broadest and most efficient of the
times, to aid in the solution of a great city,” and they named their group The Junior League for the Promotion of Settlement Movements. The New York College Settlement on Rivington Street on New York’s Lower East Side was designated as the beneficiary for the first year, chosen because it served “irrespective of church or creed” and was “one of the most deserving efforts in the city to further the growth of the Settlement movement.” Mary took on a great deal of responsibility beyond her role in the League. At 27, after the death of her father, she took over her family’s estate, now a National Historic Landmark, becoming in the process an accomplished farmer and a lifelong advocate of farming cooperatives. At 29, she married and had three children before becoming a widow at the age of 41. At 47, defying her family’s political tradition, she joined the Democratic Party. Her entry into political life ultimately led to an appointment by President Roosevelt, at the age of 53, as the Chair of the first government consumer rights group, the Consumer Advisory Board (CAB) of the National Recovery Administration (NRA). The position made her one of the highest-ranking women in the administration and from there she went on to promote the formation of consumer groups across the country. Mary Harriman’s ground-breaking work for FDR’s National Recovery Administration made her one of the highest-ranking women in the administration.

Less than a year later, Mary died in a horseback-riding accident. Mary will join a prestigious group of women in the Nation Women’s Hall of Fame, including Harriet Tubman, a great descendant of a sustainer in our very own League! Michele Jones-Galvin is the great, great grandniece of freedom fighter and the Greatest Conductor of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman. Regarding this induction, Ms. Jones-Galvin stated, “she [Tubman] and Mary Harriman are in extremely good company with all of the other inductees. The Women’s Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates the causes that these women stood for to make our nation and our communities a better place for the quality, justice and human rights for all through activism, voluntarism and philanthropy.” Each year the JLS recognizes a woman within our own membership who embodies the “spirit” of Mary Harriman, by leading a life full of philanthropic values including the pursuance of our Mission and Vision.
