OUTGOING PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As the 2015-2016 Junior League of Syracuse year wraps up, I’m overwhelmed with all we have done! After the gavel was passed to me at the June 2015 Annual Dinner, I encouraged the membership to reconnect with the Mission and Vision of The Junior League of Syracuse, to grasp their meaning and to make them their own. My goal as leader of this organization was to bring ALL of our members together to create a better JLS and community by asking members to be as engaged as possible. Based on this past year’s activities, you’ve exceeded this goal. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished. Putting my gratitude and pride into words is nearly impossible, but the statistics don’t lie…
We kicked the year off with 95 for 95, an event that showcased our members’ East Syracuse passion for the League and the • Register on the website community. 55 out of our 66 Actives participated. From there we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Holiday JLS Summer Fun and New Shoppes with a bang! March brought the Leadership and Regional Training event, where Syracuse hosted 75 members from surrounding Leagues to learn about AJLI’s new Membership Model. April was filled with activities, such as National Volunteer Week where our volunteers made a difference during six projects, including building a Book Nook for children on the West Side. And finally May introduced a new fundraiser, the 1st Annual Wine Pull Corks and Forks.
A snapshot of all we have accomplished: • 2,000 citizens impacted • 28 community activities • 10 members attended AJLI leadership training Besides getting our hands dirty, JLS women always make time to have fun. The Book Club for Actives and Sustainers continued as well as the R&R and Lunch and Learn events. This year also introduced JLS Women on the Move, periodic workout sessions held especially for JLS members, and JLS After Dark, the Actives interpretation of a R&R event. ALL members have pushed the Mission and Vision forward, by getting involved and making lifelong friends along the way. Be proud of what you have accomplished in 2015-2016. I truly want to thank the members of The Junior League of Syracuse for allowing me this amazing opportunity to serve in the President position. I have enjoyed every moment, even the frustrating ones. It has taught me invaluable leadership skills and showed me that passion is something that cannot be defined or measured. The question I always ask myself is why I continue my membership with the JLS. The reasons are endless, but at the top of the list is YOU, the membership. Without one another, we wouldn’t have a League. The Mission and Vision is what binds us, but it’s the friendships that sustain us. THANK YOU and congratulations to the membership on another successful JLS year. Time flies when you’re having fun with The Junior League of Syracuse! CORKS AND FORKS WINE PULL RECAP The Junior League of Syracuse’s 1st Annual Wine Pull - Corks and Forks, was held on Thursday, May 19 at Laci’s Tapas Bar. The event was a big hit! An evening of playing a little game of chance for a good cause turned out to be very successful! There were 57 people in attendance, and the JLS netted $1,714 from the event. The goal of the annual wine pull event is to raise awareness about The Junior League of Syracuse’s mission and membership, and provide an additional way of raising funds other than Holiday Shoppes. The idea of a “wine pull” fundraiser originally came about from our Active members who attended the Philadelphia Regional Training. We had significant others, potential New Members, New Members, Actives and Sustainers, all mingling together for a fun night of food, wine and winning! There were a lot of winners, including Kate Zwecker, who won the Grand Prize, a 10 person tapas and wine tasting dinner donated by SKY Armory. Thank you to all of the companies that donated to the event: SKY Armory; OneGroup NY, Inc.; Beak and Skiff Apple Orchard; Chocolate Pizza Company; and Laci’s Tapas Bar. And a huge thank you to all the members who donated wine to the event and participated in the wine pull. It wouldn’t have been a successful fundraiser without your contributions! MAY GMM MEETING MINUTES AND PHOTOS • Guest Speaker - Nora and Fanny from “My Sister’s Closet” (see photos at right) - Collect women’s professional clothing for women living in the YWCA - YWCA Mission is to empower women and eliminate racism and create freedom for all - Women’s residence, including My Sister’s Closet - 55 ladies (some with children and some without) - Empower them so they can be a positive member of the community - Clothes for interviews and for work - They need formal business clothing as well as everyday wear; toiletries as well - These women don’t have anything when they come to the YWCA - Offer transitional housing and permanent housing options • 1st Annual Wine Pull - Corks and Forks: Thursday, May 19th - $10 per ticket 6:30-8:30 p.m. • Holiday Shoppes Vote - Actives will vote on Holiday Shoppes 2016 member requirements at the June GMM - The vote will not include the member incentives for Holiday Shoppes tickets and shifts from previous years - If you are unable to attend the GMM, please designate a proxy to cast your vote - Proposed requirements: All active and associate members are required to work at least one five-hour shift; members are required to sell at least five tickets at a value, exclusive to members, of $5 per ticket • Nominating - Members are encouraged to sign up for the Holiday Shoppes Committee - Leadership was announced at April GMM - A Member of Nominating is on slate next year (Assistant Treasurer); this was checked with AJLI/bylaws/policies - Fund Development Chair is vacant; contact Jill Lawlor if interested • Community - Thank you for the donations for this GMM; they will be donated to local food pantries (see photo at right) • June GMM/Dinner - June 14th - RSVP for both dinner and GMM • New Member Class we welcome 14 new members to JLS

SUSTAINER NEWS Hello Sustainers.... WHAT A GREAT PARTY . . . many thanks to Margaret Karim and Raja Karim for opening their lovely home for the Sustainer Cocktail Party on April 29th! More than 50 Sustainers and guests attended and enjoyed wonderful food and fellowship. Many thanks to Maria Miller for stepping up to handle details when I was “sidelined” and for recruiting the amazing, efficient clean-up squad, namely Lynne Hamilton-Johnson, Donna Hamilton, Wendy Carl Isome, Evonne Pacini and Jane Roller! As this is my final column for The NOTES as Sustainer V-P, I want to thank everyone that has attended Sustainer events throughout the year. I hope the R&R change of day of the week and the five new and different locations have been enjoyable. I encourage you to share your favorite day and location with the new Sustainer V-P. The “bestest” part of this year was working with and making a new friend . . . Maria. She provided a recent JLS history perspective to pair up with my ancient JLS history perspective and together we created a unique team! Enjoy the Summer and Be Safe!
