2016 FEBRUARY SECTIONALS How To: Navigating the JLS Website and App Monday, February 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the CF Ballroom Join us for a fun evening of learning to access and use the Junior League of Syracuse website and Seeing Spot app. We’ll provide a step by step walk through of the new tools, offer helpful tips, and answer member questions. Bring a device or two (laptop, tablet, smart phone, etc.) so you can practice logging in, registering for calendar events, and searching for members in the directory. Come prepared with questions or email them to Jessica Murray ahead of time. Women and Heart Health Tuesday, February 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the CF Ballroom

Participate in National Heart Month by joining us for a relaxing and informative session with Crouse Hospital Spirit of Women and their experts. Learn about the latest for women’s heart health. We’ll discuss preventing heart disease and managing stress, and snack on some heart-healthy foods. Our Speakers: ‐ Cathy Wolf, RN Cardiac Care Educator ‐ Nicole Miller, LMT, MS Integrative Medicine Coordinator Dorothy Day House Monday, February 22 at 6:00 p.m. at the Dorothy Day House We’ll join families (women and children) staying at the Dorothy Day House for an after-dinner craft activity. Kids range in age from 2‐15 years old. Bring your creative thinking and be ready to interact with all ages. Limited space available. Sign up for any of these events on the JLS website or app. Attendence at one Sectional event counts towards your February GMM credit obligation. HAPPY 2016 TO ALL! We are delighted to report that the pie making event for the Rescue Mission held on December 5 produced 64 pies! We beat the 2014 total of 57 - even with fewer volunteers! Great job ladies and thanks to Anne Miller for her idea and contribution to “speed up” the process. Thanks also, once again, to our genial and efficient Chair, Sheila Corbishley, her hubby Bernie and daughter Katie Corbishley, along with the volunteers, who gave their time to shop for supplies and lug them around . . .150 lbs of apples are heavy! Our 26 Emeritus Sustainers were mailed a greeting card with personal note and a Ghirardelli sweet treat to wish them a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year. (Hope this idea will be continued by future Sustainer V-Ps.) Mary Harriman Award submissions will be due February 15. Forms are available on the JLS website. The Sustainer of the Year nomination deadline is April 1. That form is also available on website. In addition, these forms, instructions, etc., may be obtained by calling the office at 315-423-9773, or by contacting Barb Stratton at bjstratton1@verizon.net or 315-445-2591. This year we are requesting that the submissions be mailed to Barb at: 6729 Kinne Rd., DeWitt, NY 13214. The February R&R is scheduled for Thursday, February 25, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., location TBD. Please contact Barb any time with ideas or concerns. DECEMBER GMM MEETING NOTES • Nominating Vote • Community Update - December: Shopping for Angel Tree for the Downtown YMCA Wrapping at the Downtown YMCA - January 31: Serving a meal at the Catholic Charities Emergency Shelter for Men • ODI Report/Review by Christie Novak - Returned with great ideas and motivation to help strengthen the League. • Communications Report by Jessica Murray - Described the many successes from the Holiday Shoppes, including the NOTES, Bridge Street, Logo, Post Standard, Syracuse Woman Magazine, Syracuse.com, JLS website, Facebook, and Twitter. - Member website now has a “Communications Request Form” to request media support. • Annual Appeal by Christie Novak & Ksenyia Hogan - Money will be used to further our mission (promote volunteerism, recruit members, speakers at GMM, trainings, expand community outreach). • Sectionals Update by Lauren Knisley Schaefer - Technology of the JLS, Crouse Hospital Women’s Health, Gifford Foundation. • Holiday Shoppes Update - Please contact Amy Slivka if you need an alternate assignment for your Holiday Shoppes shift.
NEW MEMBER CLASS UPDATE The New Member Class remains busy and active in our local community. Recently, we had 13 New Members volunteer their time at the Dorothy Day House and at the Rescue Mission. We have many other events and community activities planned over the next few months. Check out some of our photos from the Rescue Mission. The Junior League of Syracuse is lucky to have such a great group of motivated and driven women in our New Member Class!
KUDOS! Congratulations go out to the following JLS members on these recent accomplishments: Stephanie Rose recently received her Masters of Arts in Modern and American Christianity. Cathy Dotterer recently received her Doctorate of Education in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College. COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS In December we had a great time with the residents of Chadwick Residence, making gingerbread houses and decorating cookies. We also donated gift bags with quick meal supplies to the residents who are often on the go. We continued to spread holiday cheer by shopping for and gifting holiday presents to the senior residents at the YMCA. We were able to gift over 20 items to residents, along with holiday cards and gift cards provided by the Y. The Y distributed these items at their holiday get together. They were so excited to have our help that we hope to work with them again in the near future! Finally, we rounded out our holiday cheer by making beautiful homemade cards at the December GMM. The cards were handed out at the Syracuse VA Hospital. The new year brings with it exciting new adventures for the Community Collaborations Committee. At the January GMM our speaker was Mike Sullivan from the Catholic Charities Emergency Shelter for Men. We will partner with the Men’s Shelter on January 31st to bring warm food and clothing items. Our space is limited to serve, so the best way to package food is in disposable tin pans with covers. The Men’s Shelter prefers the food items to be easy and portable. We are serving meatball subs, carrot and celery sticks, baked desserts to go, iced tea and water. Donations and volunteers are still needed. The tour starts at 4:30 p.m., with serving starting at 6 p.m. If anyone is interested in volunteering their time and talents, please contact Cheryl Saidel or Jenny Jackson ASAP or use the Seeing Spot app. Other upcoming community events are the Valentine’s Day cookie decorating with the Dorothy Day House, Little White House of Hope Valentine’s Day crafts and school supply donations, and more partnerships to come with My Sister’s Closet, the Salvation Army and the YMCA!

MY SISTER’S CLOSET DONATIONS Members donated two shopping carts (plus some!) of gently-used business attire to My Sister’s Closet at the January GMM. My Sister’s Closet is a YWCA program that gives women the opportunity to feel good about themselves and be better prepared for finding jobs. Their “new clothes” help boost confidence and empower women to make positive changes in their lives. We will be having another clothing drive in the Spring. Thank you to Betsy McLane for organizing and delivering the clothing!
