HOLIDAY SHOPPES We had another great year at the Holiday Shoppes and we would like to thank all the Active Members and Sustainers that participated and helped in making it a success! There was a great team of women on the Holiday Shoppes Committee this year and we are thankful for all of their time and hard work over the last several months. Rachel Nelson did an amazing job with PR on media platforms to promote both the Holiday Shoppes and the Junior League of Syracuse. Whitney Browne and Whitney Daniels were great at posting on all Social Media accounts to spread the word about Holiday Shoppes. Jessica Pease and Lindsey Yonko-Gardner did a fantastic job as Merchant Co-Chairs and provided excellent support to both our many returning Merchants, as well as, several new Merchants. Amy Slivka did a great job with Tickets & Staffing, and helped keep the Holiday Shoppes well-staffed and running smoothly. Courtney Jones and Lauren Fitts made the Horticulture building look lovely and festive with the decorations and Christmas trees, especially with the addition of the Mitten Tree. The raffle was also a great success thanks to Sheryl Capozzi and Stephanie deGuzman. We had a great mix of Grand Raffle prizes, including donations from Feldmeier Equipment, Chris Murray Photography, Stickley Audi & Co, Syracuse Ballet, Anheuser Busch Brewery, Detail Johnny, O-Yoga, Barre 3, Cazenovia Jewelers, and Car Freshener. We are happy to announce that the proceeds made from the 2017 Holiday Shoppes tickets sales were $33,136.00, which is a 20% increase from last year! We would also like to thank Jackie Azbill, Jessica Murray, and Marie Norkett for their support and guidance over the past several months. Jamie Lingenfelter & Mandy Spence

Over the last couple months community has engaged in a couple meaningful and impactful collaborations. First was with Serenity, Inc. At this opportunity, Junior Leaguers helped clean up the properties for Serenity’s tiny homes for female veterans. This is the beginning of a long term relationship we hope to build with this great non-profit, run by Laci’s Tapas owners.
What do you say when someone asks: “What is the Junior League” or says: “Tell me more about the Junior League”? Do you spout off our mission and vision, tagline or maybe even draw a blank and ramble off something generic about women and volunteering?
Next, Junior League participated at the annual Blodgett Thanksgiving Day Turkey Dinner. This has always been an opportunity to connect with Syracuse’s Westside population. During this event, we estimate that over 200 meals are served to those who otherwise wouldn’t get to celebrate the holiday. Please keep watch on Seeing Spot for more upcoming opportunities including Valentines Day tea and National Volunteer week events.

Opportunities to share, inform and brag about the Junior League present themselves all the time – in meetings, at social events and even in elevators! With the holiday social calendar quickly approaching now is the time to refine and memorize your Junior League of Syracuse Elevator Pitch. Steps to a Successful JLS Elevator Pitch: 1. Keep your message crisp and to the point. 2. Be prepared. Memorize it. 3. Add on to make it your own. 4. If the listener is still engaged, share some current League activities. 5. Practice with your family, friends and coworkers until it feels natural. Example 1: The Junior League of Syracuse is a group of women creating a stronger community. We do volunteer projects centered around women and youth homelessness and education. We also train women to be leaders. Example 2: The Junior League of Syracuse is women using their skills to impact our community through voluntarism. We also provide leadership training. Add ons: • I joined because… • This year we’re working on… • You might be familiar with some of our community projects such as… So next time someone asks, “What have you been doing lately?” employ your Junior League of Syracuse Elevator Pitch to spread the message of our League and all the great things we do every year!

SALT CITY SUMMIT

October 21, 2017, JLS members welcomed eight (8) sister Leagues to our Salt City Summit, a membership and fund development training.
Sustainers turned out to support the Holiday Shoppes this year, by shopping and also by working shifts during the 3-day event in early November. Many beautiful and useful items were available for purchase at the Shoppes
Amber Levy from AJLI came and spoke about the new membership opt in model, which included meeting the member where she is at. Allowing members to tailor their experience in the JLS. Working with the nominating team to ensure each member is in a position suited to them and their needs. AJLI recommends to have the member find her way of connecting herself to the League to make the experience member centric. We at JLS are already doing a fantastic job of multiple experience offerings. Lisa Vaughan, from JL of Evansville spoke about fund development, making us more aware of thinking outside the box. Always try to cultivate relationships with donors and to build a donor base. How to look for sponsors for the League and not donors for events. Laura Serway, our keynote speaker, was inspiring as always. She spoke of the development her and Cindy have done in the Hawley Green area of the city. We had the pleasure of working with them on the tiny houses for female veterans that they are working on. It was a pleasure to have Laura at the meeting and to brainstorm how to make a meaningful impact in Syracuse.
The Sustainers annual-pie making event, coordinated by Sheila Corbishley, was held again this year at Blessed Sacrament Church Parish Center in Eastwood on Saturday, December 2 from 9:00-noon. This year had a new twist…New Members under the direction of Rea Carver and Sue Shubmehl joined the effort, to learn about the Sustainers’ continuing commitment to service. Overall there were 30 participants and 90 apple pies were assembled for the Rescue Mission…a fantastic outcome! The December R&R was held on Tuesday, December 5 at Strada Mia, 313 North Geddes Street, in Syracuse, 5:30-7:30 pm.

We were pleased that our membership came out in force. We had new members, actives and sustainers who took part in the summit. Many great take aways and enthusiasm after the SCS. Sustainers were kind enough to give a detailed report of their takeaways and projects for the future for re-engagement, questioning of the tiered level of membership, tech support for sustainers and League sustainability. Overall it was a great event that members worked very hard on to plan and execute. Kudos to the team that pulled it off! So happy that actives and sustainers were involved. Wishing everybody a very happy and healthy holiday season!
