HOLIDAY SHOPPES 2016 Dear Junior League of Syracuse Members, A huge thank you goes out to all of the Junior League members who helped make the 21ST Annual Holiday Shoppes a success! We had over 4,000 attendees who shopped their way through our one-of-akind event. We were happy to hear from both merchants and shoppers alike that they look forward to our particular event each holiday season! The culmination of all of our work over the past five months was evident by the unique variety of merchants and constant flow of visitors filling the Horticulture Building. Last year, the central holiday décor was so popular that we followed the same theme except this year with live trees! This was made possible by Mona Smart and her constant communication and coordination with one of our long time vendors (Natural Creations). Thank you, Mona! The live trees were a beautiful touch! Additional “thank yous” go out to the volunteers who provided extra hands to assist in transforming the Horticulture building. We heard many positive comments on our advertising this year! Thank you to Rachel Nelson and Lindsay LaRocque for seeking out new advertising outlets and effortlessly utilizing our PR budget. The balance between radio, print, billboard, and more was perfection! The raffle table looked perfect and certainly drew the attention of the shoppers! Raffle sales were up, totaling approximately $4,950 thanks in large part to our Raffle CoChairs, Caroline Schwalm and Jessica Pease!

A huge thank you goes to our merchant co-chairs Amanda Spence and Jamie Lingenfelter! Both women were new to the merchant co-chair position and carried out their responsibilities with such energy and poise. Our merchant count totaled about 120 (plus the food trucks!) and our booth count was approximately 170. We had a wonderful mix of both returning and new merchants and all were excited to attend. A number of merchants commented on how this is their favorite show and how wonderful all of the league members are. Hats off to EVERYONE for that.

continued from cover... Thanks also go to Stacie Roberts for taking on the role of Tickets and Staffing Chair. Stacie was extremely on top of things and made sure all volunteers knew where to be and what to do. Because of this, attendees were greeted with friendly faces as they first entered our event. In addition, thank you to all Junior League members for going above and beyond by working additional shifts. Thanks also go to Jessica Murray for transforming the Junior League booth to incorporate the theme of Community Boulevard to respect the past and look forward to the future. Thanks to so many of our diligent Junior League members we were able to make sure our merchants and our volunteers were well fed and had hot coffee! Our gratitude goes out to Marie Norkett and Audra Mueller for making sure we were accounting for all of our money! Thanks also to Whitney Daniels for getting the word out on social media and attracting both attendees and new vendors. We were so fortunate to have a very strong showing of sponsors due to the consistent efforts of Christie Novak, Sarah Shea Dempsey and the Fund Development Committee. In addition, they designed and obtained the new Holiday Shoppes bags which were a big hit. We could never have had a successful Holiday Shoppes without the strong and steady support of Caryn Schrader who went above and beyond in assisting vendors and our committee members. A huge thank you to Cathy Dotterer who was ever present and ready, willing and able to jump in to lend a helping hand. And thanks to all of you – for volunteering your time and for making this year’s fundraiser a success! Thank you JLS!

ODI Training Lauren Fitts and Carrie Ryder were proud to represent the JLS at the Organizational Development Institute (ODI) in Raleigh, NC, which took place October 21-23, 2016. The plenary sessions focused on various topics, such as the Transformation Rollout initiative, a Celebrating Voluntarism Luncheon, and a very timely and memorable presentation by Vicki Clark. Vicki’s presentation focused on how diversity means understanding our differences along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. Vicki reminded us that we need to take it a step further and work harder when it comes to inclusion. We as women and as Junior League members have a responsibility to enable people to feel welcome, respected, supported and valued, not only within our organization, but in the world at large. Carrie attended the Membership Development Track, while Lauren attended the Diversified Fund Development Track. The Membership Development Track, led by the fantastic Naomi Chavez-Peters, featured six main points of learning: • Shift the membership from prescriptive to member-centric • Design engagement practices that address different member expectations (this includes those at the new member and sustainer level) • Create a member development plan with flexibility • Change the culture of your League to be a “Learning Organization” • Align placements with career paths • Create connections with mentoring The six points Naomi reviewed were extremely informative but also hearing other League’s perspectives and challenges, some of which were similar regardless of the League’s size or geographic location, were equally refreshing and educational. Carrie and Lauren were both very happy to enjoy the beautiful city of Raleigh during their downtime. Especially since it gave them both a great excuse to celebrate Carrie’s birthday! There was a whirlwind shopping trip at Cameron Village, and an excellent meal at Beasley’s Chicken and Honey. It was awesome to experience the power of strong and motivated women all weekend at the ODI and continue that experience at Beasley’s, which is owned by Ashley Christensen, one of the most successful female restaurateurs in the world today. Overall, southern hospitality is no joke y’all! Carrie and Lauren highly recommend visiting Raleigh if you can! The Junior League of Syracuse, Inc. | The NOTES | December 2016 | 3
COMMUNICATIONS WEBSITE 201 In last month’s issue of The NOTES, Assistant Website Administrator Carrie Ryder brought you an overview of the Junior League of Syracuse public website at jlsyracuse.org. League members learned about the wide variety of content that members of the community – including prospective members, community partners, and sponsors – can browse to learn more about the JLS, our history, and our widespread impact within the Central New York community. This month, the rest of the JLS Tech Team brings you an overview of the JLS members’ website. Accessible at members.jlsyracuse. org, the login-enabled site is linked to AJLI’s members’ site via the One Network initiative that streamlines website access to both platforms. (Please contact Caryn in the JLS office with any access questions or issues). When visiting members.jlsyracuse. org, you will see your MEMBER HOME with current NEWS AND REMINDERS and a list of upcoming events. Your home page also includes personalized information including your nominating advisor, a current snapshot of member obligations, and your schedule based on the events for which you registered. Also accessible from the member home page is your Member Profile with view and edit capabilities. Using
VIEW PROFILE, you can display your current and past advisors and placements, a summary and details on responsibilities (obligations), and more. Edit Profile can be used to update your contact information and add skills, non-JLS volunteer commitments, and more. Clicking on CALENDAR will display the members’ calendar with all League events, including community collaborations, membership activities, and more. Any event can be accessed for registration by clicking within the calendar view. (Events can also be accessed from the member home page.) The Calendar tab also includes a calendar of birthdays of League members. The DIRECTORY tab can be used to access a full membership directory for the JLS. While the default view displays all League members, there are five options near the top of the page you can use to search by placement, by member status, by zip code, and by name (via text search or initial of last name). Finally, the RESOURCES tab is full of information members can access throughout the year. Organized by function, you can find the current bylaws and policies, the JLS organization chart, a proxy ballot, and more. Current resources are sorted at the top of the page throughout the

year to align with JLS activities, including membership votes and award nominations. All of the functionality of the JLS’ members’ website can be accessed using the SEEINGSPOT app. You can browse and register for upcoming events, access the directory, view and edit your profile, and access the full members’ website. (SeeingSpot is currently available for iOS and Android mobile operating systems.) The members’ website is an invaluable resource for members to navigate their League lives. NEW MEMBER INFORMATION: We had a great first new member meeting on October 27, thanks to the amazing new member committee members! Eight prospective members attended a night of fun and information about the League. We have 16 prospective members who have submitted applications for this year’s new member class. The next meeting was Thursday, November 17 at Holiday Shoppes, where prospective members learned about Holiday Shoppes, helped with decorations and setup and further connected with each other and active members. There is a lot of positive energy and enthusiasm in this class and we are excited for the skills and perspectives that these new ladies will bring to our League!

We have been having an exciting year so far with Community. In October we went to Chadwick Residence to serve brunch, provide gifts and play bingo with the residents. Hear from one of the community collaborations committee members, Tiesha McNeal, about the event: The event that took place at The Chadwick Residence on Sunday, October 23rd was an example of why I joined the Junior League of Syracuse: to give back to the community by providing hope, encouragement, and joy to those in need. We offered a wonderfully received brunch that included homemade casseroles, breakfast pizza, bagels, cookies, juice, and hot chocolate. There were roughly ten women, in residence, and three children that participated. We engaged in a heated game of Bingo with small Dixie cups of candy as prizes amid laughter and friendly banter. As a letter caller, I had fun right along with the residents, slipping in my own occasional kind-hearted jests. Two moments reaffirmed my reasons for being in the JLS: the gifts of bins filled with household products and toiletries that the women eagerly grabbed up out of obvious need and the witnessing of a young girl retrieving the equivalent of a new wardrobe from the donations provide by the JLS. It was a fun-filled and uplifting event that I truly believe the women both enjoyed and benefitted from. I look forward to our next event at Chadwick. SUSTAINER NEWS A small group of Sustainers enjoyed the October 27 R &R evening at Justin’s Tuscan Grille. In case you haven’t noticed, we are trying to alternate between Wednesday and Thursday evenings at downtown and east side venues so that more Sustainers might be able to attend. All Sustainers are welcome to join us for a glass or two of a beverage and light appetizers. Watch the email blasts for dates and locations. No reservations necessary. It will soon be time to put your thinking caps on to nominate candidates for the annual Mary Harriman Award and Sustainer of the year award. Nomination forms and criteria will be mailed out shortly after January 1.
