The Junior League year has started already for the board and many of the councils. We kicked off the year, on July 22nd, with a Leadership training that was open to all League members. I was so happy to see the membership take advantage of this opportunity. We will be getting the board together for a retreat the last weekend of September, for bonding and strategic planning. As the summer moves on, I am more excited for everyone to be engaged! I know that our councils are planning new and exciting things to get members involved. All you have to do is look on Seeing Spot to see the things already being planned. Don’t worry, the Junior League Jeopardy isn’t going anywhere.
October 21st brings our Regional Training, The Salt City Summit. I am so excited to have this opportunity to have AJLI’s Amber Levy come and discuss • Location: TBD Membership/Community Impact with us. Lisa Vaughan, Past President of JL September 22: Town Hall Meeting Evansville will be here to discuss Fundraising for the Mission. Introducing the 2017-2018 President-Elect
COMMUNICATIONS
Jessica Murray joined the Junior League of Syracuse as a member of the 2008-2009 provisional class. A central New York native who had recently relocated to Syracuse, she came to the JLS to meet other women interested in community education and service. An active member since 2009, Jessica’s League experience includes two years on Holiday Shoppes, including one year as HS CoChair, two years on the Nominating Committee, and Communications Council leadership roles including Online Engagement Chair and Communications VP. She has also served on the Membership Development and Recruitment Committee and been involved with JLS initiatives including the STEM Expo, 95 for 95, and Corks, Forks, Brews, and Chews. Jessica’s volunteer involvement outside the Junior League has included the Barnes Foundation’s Holidays at the Mansion, the Lupus Alliance of Upstate New York, and upstate New York’s chapter of the Nebraska Alumni Association. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Boston College, and Syracuse University, Jessica has worked in higher education advancement at SU for 10 years. She currently works as the alumni relations director at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. Jessica resides in Dewitt with her husband Chris and their three cats. She enjoys reading, watching college football, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She is eagerly anticipating her year ahead as President-Elect and the opportunity to serve the JLS membership and the community.
The Communications Council leadership team kicked off the League year at an info sharing session with the outgoing Communications Council leadership team on July 11th and enhanced our momentum into the new year at the July 22nd Leadership Training and Planning Retreat. Our entire committee has been actively working throughout the summer to prepare for the new league year.

This year our council will continue to focus on increasing the external visibility of the JLS’s mission, vision, and underlying activities through a variety of communications platforms, including our website, social media activity, and public relations efforts. In addition, we will continue to tailor news and information presented to members through communications including email blasts, the members’ website, and the NOTES. In the 2017-2018 league year our council will be placing additional focus on streamlining collection and dissemination of information throughout the league and externally through additional use of website forms and templates, adopting new technologies, re-energizing our blog and bringing new content to our website. In addition, we will be placing extra focus on external visibility through new media partners and signage. If your council or committee has a news story, event, or other newsworthy happening, please share it with the Communications team via the communications request form so we can spread the word. Don’t forget to include images as well! Also, check out the new email blast request form in Member Resources which enables you to submit the information required to have a news item included in the weekly email blast. Leadership Training
SUSTAINER NEWS We have already had some great Sustainer activities this summer! Our first R&R was held at Carabba’s in Fayetteville on Wednesday, July 26th. Hostesses were Jane Roller and Terry Russo. The second R&R was held at Grover’s Table, also in Fayetteville, on August 29. Hostesses were Margaret Karim and Stephanie Macero. They were great opportunities to relax and swap summer stories! Then on Tuesday, August 2, a Sustainer “Wine and Wrap” was held to benefit the CNY Diaper Bank, at the Diaper Bank office at 1064 West Genesee Street, Syracuse. We learned about this all-volunteer organization working to provide diapers to families in need through a growing network of social service agencies and to build awareness of diaper need in CNY, and we helped wrap approximately 6500 diapers for distribution. And of course, there was wine, hors d’oeuvres and fun while we worked! Many thanks to Sharon Slater for organizing this. Our next big event is the Sustainer Golf Outing and Dinner on Monday, September 18 at Drumlins. And we are looking forward to the Salt City Summit in October.

The HS committee has begun its meetings and is looking forward to a successful and exciting 2017 show. MEMBERSHIP ANNUAL DINNER RECAP:
This year’s Annual dinner was at Justin’s Tuscan Grille. We celebrated our accomplishments from 2016-17 with a lovely slide show and member awards. Our members also welcomed the new President with a bang! The centerpieces were created by the Education and Training committee. The vegetable plants and pots were all donated to community gardens and the LWHH in Syracuse. We look forward to great things in the next year!
MEMBERSHIP/TRAINING UPDATE: At present, we have 63 active
members and 184 sustainer members. We are looking forward to an exciting year that will include innovative GMMs, trainings, JLS After Darks, and monthly book club and sweatworking (formerly JLS Women on the Move) events! Check Seeing Spot at the September GMM for a full calendar year’s events. We are also in the midst of several recruitment events and are building a robust New Member Class for the 2017-2018 year. Final events were on 8/9 and 8/14. The Education and Training Committee is organizing three monthly socializing events for the 2017-2018 year.
BOOK CLUB will meet the 1st Monday of the month at 7pm in the 3rd floor
board room. Our first meeting will be October 2nd to discuss A Beautiful Poison by Lydia Kang. A full reading list will be distributed by the September GMM.
JLS AFTER DARK events will occur after each GMM. There will be reserved
seating at a nearby restaurant such as Otro Cinco, J Ryan’s, and Sugar & Co.
If you are looking to move more while connecting with other JLS members, join our new SWEATWORKING sessions. On the 4th Saturday of the month at 9am (usually) we will get together to try out a new or favorite workout. Our first event was yoga on August 12th at Syracuse Yoga. Also planned for the year are Zumba, Barre3, meditation, and a Turkey Trot.

The Community Collaborations Committee is excited to begin our 97th year impacting the community. While we hope to do many of the collaborations that have been very successful, such as Blodgett and Stem, we are also planning on bringing in some new and exciting takes on what community impact means. This being said, we understand not all members have joined the league to volunteer. Because of this, we will be scaling back the amount of actual collaborations we have and make the existing ones bigger and better.
