A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Eudora Welty, a member of the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi once said, "All serious daring starts from within." This League year, we are continuing some serious daring from within! After careful consideration, we as a League have chosen to focus our efforts on our League-wide projects: Feeding Our Future, Kids in the Kitchen and Healthy Habits Expo ~ and of course our fundraisers, Thrift Sale and Charity Ball. We recognize that this is quite a change from our previous requirement of hours spent in an external placement, but we as a League found that we were wanting to concentrate more of our efforts on these projects to be able to serve more families and have a greater impact in our community During our monthly food distributions, we are providing food to 100 families and our Healthy Habits Expo earlier this year had over 600 attendees! Through “Done in a Day” projects each League member will continue to provide volunteer time to local non-profits We truly believe this will allow us to provide a tremendous impact to local families through our own projects and to area non-profits through our service. With all of these changes we know members will have questions, I am always available by email (jgjd05@yahoo.com) or phone (770.532.6845).
The year is well underway with planning for Thrift Sale and Charity Ball. The Thrift Sale is set for Saturday, October 5th. I know we all look forward to working together as a League for this great event and appreciate what a service it is to our community. Save the date for Charity Ball, December 14th. Excitement is growing for the night and we have begun to already have requests for tickets!
As we start the new League year, I am excited about the opportunities we have to serve the community and work together May we always strive to seriously dare from within!

Strengthening Families
Feeding Our Future has been going strong throughout the summer. In May we served 96 families representing 22 schools throughout Gainesville City and Hall County In June we served 99 families representing 21schools throughout Gainesville City and Hall County. July was the first month of our shortened distribution window and our totally first-come-first serve distribution We served 100 families in an hour and a half, representing 13 city and county schools. Of these families, venty- three families were first time recipients of a Feeding Our Future food box. This league year (May – July) we have served 209 different families through Feeding Our Future
A special thank you:
• WomenSource selected Feeding Our Future as their outreach agency for the month of June The ladies of WomenSource graciously donated items for the food pantry at the June Brown Bag Lunch. The generous donations totaled 190 lbs of food
• Keller Williams Realty conducted a Food Drive through their charity division to help stock the pantry. Through the donations of Keller Williams a total of 357 lbs of food was added to the summer supply.
• League member Magill Fleming requested that guests of her son’s birthday party bring an item to donate and sustainer Ashley Mixon held a food drive at her work that garnered 500 lbs of food!
The Junior League will be partnering with the Georgia Mountain Food Bank to become a community partner agency this fall. Feeding Our Future is excited for this renewed partnership and the opportunity to grow the program with the help of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank.

Strengthening Families is excited to bring back the Kids in the Kitchen program this year! Lauryn White is the Kids in the Kitchen Chair and will be presenting programs throughout the school year in our elementary schools, demonstrations at Feeding Our Future distributions and at the Healthy Habits Expo If you are assigned a Kids in the Kitchen work shift Lauryn will be in touch with you throughout the year with ways you can help.

As a reminder, all members are required to serve on a Healthy Habits Expo committee or work the Expo. In addition to the Expo, all members are required to work a Feeding our Future distribution or a Kids in the Kitchen event. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THRIFT SALE
1. Every member of the League is responsible for serving on one Thrift Sale committee AND for working one shift on Sale Day, Oct. 5th, 2013.
2. Sale Day hours are 9-2; there are two shifts: 8:30-11:30 and 11-2.
3. Sale Day assignments are printed on the back side of this page If you are unable to work your shift, you are required to see if another member can switch with you. If you are unable to find anyone to do so, you will be fined. Anyone who switches shifts or is unable to fulfill their Sale Day requirements is asked to contact Magill Fleming at magillfleming@gmail.com or Katie Crumley at kt.highsith@gmail.com ASAP. The same protocol should be followed for your Thrift Sale committees.
4. Committees include General Workshift, Pick-up and Storage, Properties and Advanced Donations/Preview Party
5. Every member of the League is responsible for pricing and bringing $200 worth of quota/merchandise to the Georgia Mountains Center during Sale Week. That quota must be checked off by someone at the Sale Table, and the member is then responsible for setting it out in its appropriate place Remember, only $50 worth of adult clothing can go toward your quota. Also, no undergarments, knives, mattresses, plastic Tupperware containers, bathing suits, T-shirts or shoes will be allowed Books, stuffed animals and any items worth less than $0 25 are also not sold during Thrift Sale
6. A p r i c i n g s h e e t a n d a q u o t a s h e e t c a n b e f o u n d a t gainesvillehalljuniorleague org The pricing sheet is to be used as a guide to price the items you donate The price should be written with black Sharpie marker on a piece of masking tape and then affixed to the item Adult clothing does not have to be priced Fill out the quota sheet to turn into the members working the Sale Table during Sale Week.
7. Please bring a minimum of 20 plastic or paper shopping bags and 4 boxes with your quota.
8. Each year, the member of the League that brings in the largest amount of quota is dubbed “Prize Girl ” The prizes for “Prize Girl” in the past have included a John Wind bracelet and spa gift certificates, so clean out your house and call family and friends to see if they have any donations to help your chances!
9. Preview Party will be held the Thursday prior to Sale Day, Oct. 3rd at 8 p.m. Every member of the League and a guest can come and enjoy dinner, live entertainment and social time with other League members A ticket to Preview Party for each member and their guest is included in the League dues
10. Prior to Preview Party, Double-Price Shopping will be held at the GMC from 5-8 Admission is $5 for the general public It’s an opportunity for them to get “first dibs” on the merchandise; however, the cost is DOUBLE the marked price
11. Sustainer Coffee is held on Thursday between 10 a m and 1 p m Sustainers get in free for the first look at the sale Again, everything is double priced

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
*All League Members are responsible for bringing a quota of $200 of “Thrift Sale Priced” merchandise to the Georgia Mountain Center
*The drop off time for your quota begins Sunday, September 29th at 5pm-8:30 pm and ends at 12:00 noon on Tues, October 1st Please complete the quota sheet available on the website and turn it in as you drop off your items.
*All items must be priced according to the Price Sheet (available online) and need to be labeled with masking tape and the price written with a black Sharpie During drop-off, each member is responsible for putting out her own quota Please bring a minimum of 20 plastic grocery bags and 4 extra-large boxes with your quota.
*If you need to store any of your quota in the storage units you will be responsible for working an extra General Workshift or Sale Day shift

You are welcome to donate as much adult clothes as you wish, but you must donate $150 worth of quota that is NOT adult clothing You will not be responsible for pricing the adult clothing you are donating
*Be “PRIZE GIRL” this year! Clean out your house and call family and friends to see if they have any donations The largest amount of quota will win you the title of PRIZE GIRL. Please remember if you would like to be in the running for PRIZE GIRL, Katie or Magill will need to check your quota sheet AND your donated items
*Another reminder of the new law in effect regarding the reselling of any recalled item (mainly children’s items) that could have a high level of lead We need to pay special attention to the following items and make sure they are thrown away and not placed in the arena for re-sale: recalled children’s particularly cribs and play yards; children’s products that may contain lead such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys; flimsily made toys that are easily breakable into small parts; toys that lack the required age warnings The General Workshift Committees will be responsible for sorting these items, but we want everyone aware of the potential dangers of these items.
