A NOTEFROMTHE PRESIDENT
Hey Ladies, I hope you all had a wonderful summer! I know we often say our league year doesn’t officially kick off until the first general membership meeting in September, but I can tell you that the ladies of the Gainesville Hall County Junior League have been hard at work over the summer months prepping and planning for things to come.
I’m constantly amazed by and learning from our League members who work so hard to make each of the League’s projects successful and each member’s experience rewarding. I want to say a special thank you to those who spent countless summer hours to ensure that the upcoming League year is our best year yet!
In June, I, along with the board of directors, attended the AJLI Area III regional conference in Athens. The ladies of the Athens Junior League welcomed League members from all over the Southeast to discuss opportunities and ways for our members to become pillars in our communities. We had the chance to take part in workshops specific to our area of focus as well as network with members from other Leagues serving in the same positions and exchange suggestions and ideas about topics that affect all of our Leagues and our members….I think we all came away with some great ideas!
The Athens League even treated us to a home tour at the Dooley residence, where we were able meet both Barbara and Vince, get autographs and tour their home and the grounds (we took a few pictures to share). Thanks to all the board members who attended the conference….I know I came home inspired and energized to start the new League year and I hope the rest of those who attended did as well.
The Thrift Sale and Charity Ball committees have been extremely busy over the summer months planning for the upcoming Oct. 6 and Dec. 8 events. We can’t wait to hear all the exciting plans that these ladies have in store for us this year. I also want to say congratulations to all our members who got married or had new little Leaguers over the summer months…I look forward to seeing the pictures and hearing the stories!
As summer comes to a close and the League year gets into full swing I’m excited about the opportunities we will have this year to serve the community and grow together as a League. I’ll see you all at the first General Membership Meeting on Sept. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. September’s meeting will be facilitated by our President-Elect, Julia Green, who has lined up a fantastic meeting and a panel of guest speakers that is sure to jump start a great year! THRIFT SALE
The Thrift Sale Committee has been hard at work this summer to prepare for this year’s event. Ahuge thank you to Meredith Braham, Katie Crumley, Magill Fleming and Havolynne Saxon for your dedication, enthusiasm and leadership. There is no doubt that, as a group, the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County will make a huge impact on our community through our efforts for the 47th Annual Thrift Sale. IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
All League Members are responsible for bringing a quota of $200 of “Thrift Sale Priced” merchandise to the Georgia Mountains Center.
• The drop-off time for your quota begins Sunday, Sept. 30 between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and ends at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 3. Please complete the quota sheet available on the website and turn it in as you drop off your items.
• All items must be priced according to the Price Sheet (available online) and need to be labeled with masking tape and the price written with a black Sharpie. During drop-off, each member is responsible for putting out her own quota. Please bring a minimum of 20 plastic grocery bags and 4 extra-large boxes with your quota.
• If you need to store any of your quota in the storage units, you will be responsible for working an extra General Workshift or Sale Day shift.
• Any General Workshift changes or Sale Day requests must be submitted in writing to Tiffany or Leslie by Sept. 10. Remember, no books or stuffed animals and nothing that is priced lower than $0.25.
• We will continue this year accepting ALLadult clothes for Thrift Sale except t-shirts, undergarments, bathing suits, shoes and socks. You are welcome to donate as much adult clothing as you wish, but you must donate $150 worth of quota that is NOT adult clothing. You will not be responsible for pricing the adult clothing you are donating.
• Be “PRIZE GIRL” this year! Clean out your house and call family and friends to see if they have any donations. The largest amount of quota will win you the title of PRIZE GIRL. Please remember, if you would like to be in the running for PRIZE GIRL, Tiffany or Leslie will need to check your quota sheet AND your donated items.
• Another reminder of the new law in effect regarding the reselling of any recalled item (mainly children’s items) that could have a high level of lead. We need to pay special attention to the following items and make sure they are thrown away and not placed in the arena for resale: recalled children’s items particularly cribs and play yards; children’s products that may contain lead such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys; flimsily made toys that are easily breakable into small parts; toys that lack the required age warnings. The General Workshift Committees will be responsible for sorting these items, but we want everyone aware of the potential dangers of these items.

After loading up on all those goodies, we invite you to take a short walk across Gainesville’s downtown square and join us for dinner and drinks at this year’s Harvest Thrift Sale Preview Party at the “Stables” at Recess. Chris Richardson, owner of Recess, has worked hard to restore the old Nickelback building next door to his restaurant to its original glory, and we’re pleased to announce that it will be fully devoted to our event beginning at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4!
Come on out and enjoy the newly refurbished space and Recess’ Southern gastropub cuisine, as well as music by Gainesville’s own Allen Nivens. Tickets are $15 for non-League members. We’ll also be raffling off some amazing “packages” this year that include something for everyone from the fitness buff to the car enthusiast to the mom-on-the-go. This year, the Feeding Our Future program will continue to assist families in need at six schools in the Gainesville/Hall County area. As the program continues to thrive and grow, volunteer time and food donations are important to achieving our goals.
The Strengthening Families Chairs also recognize that it is important to offer additional opportunities for League members to achieve their volunteer goals. This opportunity will be provided in addition to the existing volunteer needs each month for distribution.

donated, you will receive 30 minutes of volunteer time. Through Feeding Our Future, we provide each family approximately 30 pounds of food each month, so your donations will make a HUGE difference.
Food donations can come from many sources…
• Host a food drive at your place of employment
• Ask family/friends for donations
• Clean out your pantry
• Take advantage of coupons and/or store specials
• Ask local businesses for donations or to host a food drive
• And more…
Based on the most needed items in the Food Pantry, the following are the specific requests for the upcoming months; however, please remember that all donations are appreciated!
• “Spaghetti September” – Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Canned Spaghetti
• “Oatmeal October” – Boxed Oatmeal

COMMUNITY CORNER
The Powerof the Purse VendorMarketplace on Tuesday, Sept. 11, is a great opportunity for small businesses to get the word out about their products. Approximately 300 women attend the Power of the Purse each year. Your business name with a link to your website or your email will be listed on the WomenSource website and you will have a booth at the marketplace. The booth is very affordable, just $150 for an approximately 10’by 10’area, and includes two vendor badges, a table and two chairs. The Arts in Schools Benefit Festival is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, on the Smithgall Arts Center Lawn in Gainesville. The event, presented by The Arts Council and McDonald’s, will be a fun-filled day that helps support the arts in local schools. The Arts in Schools Benefit is free to attend. The event will be one big carnival, and participants can purchase tickets for games, interactive arts and crafts, fair foods, inflatables, a celebrity dunk tank and more.
