Many have been working hard over the summer through volunteering in community agencies and planning for this League year. Thank you to Katie Dubnik, Lindsay Smithson and Jessica Butler for all of your hard work in making the Leadership Retreat in May such a productive, informative and fun day for 35 ladies in various leadership positions this year. We all learned from each other, shared ideas and focused on all of the positive ways that Junior League members come together to live out our vision of making our community a better place for children and families.
In line with our Strengthening Families initiative, ways League members work to strengthen their own families will be highlighted in some League Log issues this year. As said best by our Communications Chair, Erin Price, “…we do such an extraordinary job helping other families through volunteerism we forget what impact we have on our own families and how our experiences with our families can help others.” Past President Christina White said to me just a few weeks ago that she is so proud to be associated with women who realize the importance of our personal relationships, that “if we build each other up, starting at home, we are building a better community.” How true that is.
In working together and lifting each other up we make a difference in the lives of others. There are numerous ways that each member works to strengthen the children and families in our community, including our own. We are servants and we are leaders. We volunteer our time, talents and energy to help make our community a better place. It is sometimes too easy to be critical of others because we may do things a little different, but we must keep the focus on just how amazing it is for our members to come together to make such a big difference in our community
From the Feeding our Future Food Drive and distribution of food boxes to 50 needy families year-round, to Kids in the Kitchen volunteers working with children throughout the community to teach healthy eating habits and the importance of proper nutrition, from the grand opening in August of the new Joseph Walters Boys & Girls Club near Lyman Hall Elementary School that the League helped make a reality by awarding its first Signature Project Grant in 2000-2001, to awarding a third Signature Project Grant this League year to either a local agency in line with the League’s mission or to a Junior League major project, it is evident that we are doing such great things. It takes all of our members working together to accomplish such. Thrift Sale and Charity Ball do not happen because of three or four ladies. While it definitely takes strong and capable leaders which we are blessed to have, it takes all of us working together to raise money to award needed grants to agencies and to support League projects. We will donate over $130,000 this year and that is simply… amazing! Thank you for all that you do. I appreciate the opportunity to serve with each of you.

Cheer a trick on the slide, fix a boo-boo, thread a bead necklace, sing a song, chow down on PB&J for lunch, splash in the pool, and settle down for a movie. Seems easy, doesn’t it? Multiply it by 18 four-year-olds, and you’ve got a full day!

The J.A. Walters Family YMCAprovides exciting activities for children ages four through teen throughout the summer. My placement was with the youngest children in the Discovery Zone Day Camp, where I assisted the counselors in supervising the children, managing crafts, leading songs, and generally entertaining the campers. Four-year-olds need constant attention, whether it’s making sure they don’t push each other on the slide, opening a water bottle (we spent lots of time outside), comforting hurt feelings, cleaning up markers, or helping with manners. The counselors, most of whom were college girls, were glad to have another adult around to share the load. The highlights of the week for me (and the children too, I think) were taking a field trip to the Spraygrounds at Laurel Park and swimming in the YMCA’s indoor pool, but I was also happy to serve as a role model for children whose home lives might be less than stable.
Throughout the week, I remained conscious of the League’s mission to help women and children in Hall County, and this placement helped me contribute to that goal. I was grateful to the YMCAfor providing such an invigorating experience, and I know they were appreciative of my watchful eye and helping hands. I already have ideas for books to read and songs to sing with the kids next year; I can hardly wait!

United Way

I had the opportunity to sweat it out at the United Way School Supply Drive! I arrived on a hot afternoon. All the volunteers were escorted to the semi-trailer (located in the back lot) loaded with backpacks, paper, folders, tissue, rulers, crayons, erasers, pens....almost every supply a child could need to start school. You name it...we sorted it!
The United Way has contacted local school counselors to identify children in need. These supplies will then be offered and distributed to these children.
It was a hot, sweaty job! As I sorted, I thought about the added benefit of how many calories I was burning and how the opportunity to help these kids get off to a good start in school made it all worthwhile!!!
We have done it again! Our League has made it a remarkable 2010 Summer! We have had many summer placements that have been completed and lots of Done in ADay projects and events that we have worked on through out the Summer. This is one of the many things that makes our League what it is....A great group of women!

Your placement team this year has been hard at work over the summer planning and calling agencies. We have mapped out how DIAD’s should work and are hoping that this makes everything flow for all of you. There is a list of our placement team (see below), so that if you have any questions about upcoming events you may contact the advisor for the agency or me.
You have all been receiving emails from me over the Summer about our new DIAD’s for 2010-11 League year. We have had a great response from all of you and an even better response from our agencies in the community that we support. I am posting a year long DIAD list for you on the League’s website and current opportunities on the calendar, page 12, of this issue. These are events that are already in the making. If you are one who likes to map out your schedule, these dates should help. I am sure there will be more DIAD events added as our year moves forward, but my advice to you is not to wait until April! Some events have limited space and we all know how the days can tick by and the end of the League year can creep up before we know it and hours are missing.

First Signature Grant at Work
In 2001, I was privileged to be a part of the League when we awarded our first Signature Grant to The Boys and Girls Club.I can recall our membership being so impressed with thekids andthe vision the organization had to meet future needs of children in this area.Needless to say, we were SOLD!Nearly ten years later, walking through the newest facility, The Joseph F. Walters Club, I was thrilled to seethe hope both organizations had for the Signature Grant becoming fulfilled.

The Committee has made some changes to Thrift Sale and Preview Party this year that we are proud to introduce and are excited to see the rewards that they bring. • All League Members are responsible for bringing a quota of $150 of “Thrift Sale Priced” merchandise to the Georgia Mountain Center. The drop off times for your quota are Sunday, September 26th between 2pm and 6pm through Wednesday,September 29th between 9am and 7:30pm.All items must be priced according to the Price Sheet and need to be labeled with masking tape and the price written with a sharpie.Please bring a minimum of 20 bags and 2 boxes with your quota.
• Please use the new price sheet and a new quota sheet that is online.
• Remember no books or stuffed animals and nothing that is priced lower than $0.25.
• Be “PRIZE GIRL”this year!! Clean out your house and call family and friends to see if they have any donations.The largest amount of quota will win you the title! Please remember if you would like to be in the running for Prize Girl have Christina or Pyper check your quota sheet AND your donated items.
• If you need to store any of your quota in the storage units you will be responsible for picking up an extra General Workshift or Sale Day shift.
• Any General Workshift changes or Sale Day requests must be submitted in writing to Christina or Pyper by September 13th.
• A big change this year is that we are now accepting ALL adult clothes for Thrift Sale except t-shirts,undergarments,bathing suits,shoes and socks. You are welcome to donate as much adult clothing as you wish,but you must donate $100 worth of quota that is NOT adult clothing.You will not be responsible for pricing the adult clothing you are donating.
Our Kids in the Kitchen committee started out this year with a group meeting at INK at the end of May. Sandra Stringer, Nutrition Educator with the UGA-Hall County extension office, provided useful information, tips and resources that our committee will be using as we impact the children of our community this year by encouraging them to make healthy lifestyle choices. We will have a committee member at INK on Saturday, August 28th and hope you will join us. We are looking forward to partnering with the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce in October as we reach out to some children in our local schools. • There is a new law in effect regarding the reselling of any recalled item (mainly children’s items) that could have a high level of lead.We need to pay special attention to the following items and make sure they are thrown away and not placed in the arena for re-sale:recalled children’s cribs and play yards;children’s products that may contain lead such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys; flimsily made toys that are easily breakable into small parts;toys that lack the required age warnings.The General Workshift Committees will be responsible for sorting these items,but I want everyone aware of the potential dangers of these items.

Dues,Dues,Dues…What Do My Dues Do?
Have you ever found yourself asking this question as you write your check for $300 (or $70 for sustainers) each year? Do you wonder what your money is spent on? Our dues go entirely to cover the Junior League’s operating expenses-the cost of keeping the League in business. Last year’s expenses totaled $87,292.
And what exactly are you paying for? Here are a few examples. Out of your $300, we remit $35 on each member’s behalf to AJLI, $40 covers May Dinner, $10 is for a Thrift Sale T-shirt, and $125 covers your Charity Ball ticket. We pay $1.42 annually to cover postage and mailing materials, and another $3.79 for stationary and office supplies. $15.38 is applied to office rent and it costs $3.01 for us to make phone calls. It costs $3.57 to maintain our office equipment and $3.88 to run our website. In addition, it costs $26.53 annually per member to print the League Log. We each pay $4.45 for Membership Development and $1.65 for Sustainer Relations. $17.78 goes to salaries to pay office staff. We pay $8.03 to insure us and $20.18 for legal and accounting services-to make sure that we are accounting for

Thank you to all of our sustainers who have pitched in over the summer for a Done in ADay (DIAD) Project. All of your help is very appreciated from the agencies and the League.
all of the money we raise and allocating it to the community correctly. When we add in the other administrative costs to keep us going, we wind up with a significant shortfall for each member.
In these tough economic times, everyone is cutting back and the Junior League is no exception. We began last year taking steps to save money by utilizing our website and email instead of printing and mailing items. We will continue to look for ways to trim our expenses.
THANK YOU FOR PAYING YOUR DUES and paying them in a timely fashion. As you can see, they are critical for the Junior League to run efficiently, not to mention for us to be able to turn the lights on. Your dues make it possible for us to pay for the things that support the Junior League. With our members covering our internal expenses, we are able to do more for our community!
