A Note from the President...

The feeling of fall is in the air which for a Junior League member can only mean one thing…it’s time for Thrift Sale!! Quota is due, the work shift schedule is out, and sale day is less than a week away. Faith Ledford and Kelly Lee, along with their Thrift Sale committee, have been preparing for a great event. Don’t miss out on Preview Party with the double price shopping and the auction items for the Silent and Live Auctions. LeAnne Walters’committee has a wonderful evening waiting for us on Thursday night. Our Sustainers will start the evening with a brand new exclusive event just for them. The wine and cheese double price shopping Happy Hour! We are all looking forward to seeing ourSustainers at the Thursday event from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., and then we hope that all of you will stay and be ourguest forPreview Party which kicks off at 6:00 p.m.

Thrift Sale is a great opportunity to witness a large group of women accomplishing a goal which will greatly affect the lives of others. We offer household items at an affordable price to those who truly need help in our community. As a result of this effort, we are then able to give the money that we earned and put it to use in the many agencies that the League helps support. What a great example of the mission of the Junior League!

It is often hard to realize the strides that we make in fulfilling our mission as we volunteer. While providing information for the new website, I had the opportunity to help compile a history of our accomplishments over the years. I am still in awe of the fearlessness of these Sustainers who saw a need and wanted to do something about it. Our fundraisers of today came from the very beginnings of our League, and many of our local agencies began as a Junior Service League project. Take a moment to view our new website and look at our history. It will make you very proud to be a member of such an incredible organization which continues to be comprised of strong, yet compassionate, women. It is unfortunate that there will always be a need of some kind, but through the Junior League we will continue to offer trained volunteers to improve a less than ideal situation. We merely have to look at our history to realize that the opportunities of improving lives and making a difference are limitless. It is within each of us to put into action the dream of one. Let us know your dreams.

42nd Annual Thrift Sale

It’s almost the first Saturday in October and you know what that means! Time for the Thrift Sale! Hopefully, you have cleaned out your basements, closets, garages and attics collecting your “treasures” for what is sure to be an exciting day. We have included job assignments and information in this issue. Be sure to stop in at the check-in table in the Arena to sign in and sign out FOR EACH WORKSHIFTAND ON SALE DAY! If you haven’t already picked up your Thrift Sale T-shirt, please remember to do so when you check in or drop off your quota. We appreciate all your hard work helping us accomplish this major fundraiser and service to our community.

Sale Day Key For Assignments/Responsibilities

• Bag Check

Help with Lobby area designated for customers to leave packages/holding area while shopping.

• Arena Checkout

Indicates whether you are working as caller, adding machine worker, or bagger. Numbers on the following pages indicate what lane you are in.

• New Shop Checkout

There will be callers, adders, cashiers and baggers.

• Floaters

Please ask at the check in table for your specific area. Some will be door guards, some will remain in the furniture area, some will walk the floors, etc.

• Callers

Calls out the price for each item to the person working the adding machine.

• $1.00 Admit

Responsible for collecting $1.00 for each person entering Thrift Sale. Ages 0-100 must pay $1.00to enter. Two lanes: one for correct change; one for people who need change. This helps with traffic flow.

• Adders

Adds up the merchandise the caller reads to you.

• Cashiers

Collects money and makes change for the customer.

• Bag and Wrap

Bags and wraps up purchases and marks each package with a SOLD sticker. Please make sure people exit the area after paying for their purchase. They may re-enter without additional cost.

Hello Ladies, I hope that you enjoyed seeing a preview of the auction items for “One Rockin Sale.” There are many more items but just not enough room to list them in the League Log! I am very excited about this year’s Preview Party! Again this year, we are having the Poor Man’s Auction. For $50, you can buy a raffle ticket for a drawing to win your choice of the live auction items before the bidding begins. Last year, Debbie Gress won a car for $50! We must sell 50 tickets to have the Poor Man’s Auction and you must be present to win. This year, we have put a cap on the entries at 150 tickets. Please encourage everyone you know to purchase a Poor Man’s Ticket!

We are trying something new this year! In place of our morning coffee the day of Thrift Sale Preview Party, we will be having a social. The social begins at 4:00 pm and ends at 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 4th. Make sure you enter at the theater and not the main Georgia Mountains Center entrance. We will have the same great 1st opportunity for you to find the “treasures” with double price shopping in the Arena & New Shop, light hors d’oeurves and wine. An advantage to attending the social is we invite you to be our guest for Preview Party beginning at 6:00pm. The only catch is you must already be in the Georgia Mts. Center prior to 5:30 for this special

invitation. The Preview Party Chair, LeAnne Walters and Preview Party committee has been working hard on the oldies theme “One Rock’n Sale” for the Thrift Sale Preview Party. It will be a lot of fun!

Placement News

Gainesville Humane Society

All it took was one quick scan through the list of options for placement and I immediately saw the option I’d pick, Gainesville’s Humane Society. I’ll admit it, when it comes to pooches and felines, I’m a softy. I’m the first one to ‘ooh’ and ‘aww’ over someone’s pet and every time I encounter someone who is looking for a pet, I’ll sing the virtues of adopting a pound animal over a pedigree.

Needless to say I was excited that I was able to get the Humane Society placement! My husband, however, was not so certain. He scowled a little and said, “That’s cool, but you can’t bring home every animal there now.” Funny enough, I took him with me on my second visit and we played ‘role-reversal’, with me being the one informing him that HE can’t adopt every animal HE sees!

As for my placement, it began with a brief walk through at the shelter, an overview of the tasks for a volunteerand some interesting statistics about the

adoption rate of the animals (roughly 60% of the animals in the shelter are euthanized, which equates to about 21 animals a day). After that, I was pretty much on my own to walk, feed, bathe and play with all the cuddly critters there. One other interesting thing that I found out was that there is no age limit on volunteers. Which means that if you have kids that love animals, like most do, they can come along and volunteer as well!

So all-in-all I couldn’t be happier with my placement. The staff is friendly and helpful, the animals are affectionate and playful and the feeling that you get from bringing a little happiness to these animals, is about as rewarding as it gets. Now if I could just figure out how to save every one of them, I’d be set. By the way, have you considered getting a pet recently? I know where you can find the perfect one!

I guess my “family’s favorite” recipe would be Ritzy Chicken, as that was their request for dinner at least twice a month. Walt, still requests it when he is around for me to cook for him. I also like Chicken Artichoke Casserole by Carrie Hatfield. That is the one I have to make for Walt and all his buddies in Wyoming, when I visit. That is several of the guys’favorite. Another one is Joan Hopkins’Myra’s Marinated Mushrooms. I think any member would tell you it is a favorite to use for parties, big or small. There are never any left at the end of the party, they are toooo good.
