A Note from the President...
Ladies,
Have you heard? This year 1,000 more community members attended Thrift Sale than last year. This fact alone should make you proud of the work the League is doing for Gainesville and Hall County. Nice work ladies!
Afew things to note about the November meeting: The meeting is on Election Day. So, consider voting early. Christy Moore will be speaking to us about the needs of Gainesville and Hall County and I know you will want to hear what she has to say. After all, understanding what the community needs is the first step in meeting those needs. I would also like to encourage you to bring nonperishable food items to the meeting. Our done-in-a-meeting project will be the donation of items to the North Georgia Food Bank so that fewer members of our community will be hungry.
Charity Ball co-chairs, Liza Chapman and Stacey Vinton, have been hard at work assisting Belle Candidates and clubs with fundraising ideas and preparing for the big night. At this year’s Charity Ball we will not only be celebrating the fundraising accomplishments of these lovely ladies but we will be celebrating the 80s as well. If you were involved in the League during the 80s there will be a special “reception” from 8:00-9:00pm. We look forward to reminiscing with you.
Please take a moment to welcome Brittany James. She is the bright new face at the League Office. I’d like to extend a special thanks to all those who filled in while we were without an administrative assistant.

What a terrific year! Thanks to everyone for working so hard on this year’s Thrift Sale. We had a record turnout on Sale Day this year and it really shows that the Junior League is needed in this community. Thrift Sale is no small effort and it makes all the long hours worth it when we see that the families in this community need and appreciate our help.
We would like to thank our committee chairs, Keri, Jennifer, Pyper and Christina for working so hard to make this year a success. Also, a huge thank you to our sustainer advisors Kelly Lee and Cindy Wilson for all of your insight. Thank you also to past chairs Lynn Carter and Liza Chapman for offering your help and experience, you are so appreciated! A special thanks to Emily Gaddy and Cynthia Myers for all your help organizing and making sure the behind the scenes work went smoothly.
Thank you to our wonderful translators Mary Meadows and Emily Embry, we could not do this without you! Thanks to Katie Dubnik and Eliza Baker for your help with promotions on the radio, in the news and in the League Log. Liz Thompson, thank you for all of your time and effort. Charity Ball 2008
It is hard to believe that 2008 has almost come and gone, but not without the 57th Annual Charity Ball! Charity Ball is the highlight of the Holiday season in our community, and we have some exciting news about the upcoming event. Saturday, December 13 is the date of the anticipated occasion. This year, we are stepping back in time to remember the 1980’s and will be entertained by the cover band, “The Breakfast Club.” With us turning back two decades, Charity Ball will be a “black and white” event this year. So remember, the color scheme when you purchase your attire.

This committee will meet at Chattahoochee Country Club on the day of the Ball-Saturday, December 13th from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM to help decorate and set up for Charity Ball.

Having completed my doctorate in medical dentistry at the University of Florida, I was honored to accept a partnershipin the Bennett Family Dentistry practice.At that time, I thought my dental “education” was completed. However, practicing in Gainesville opened my eyes to the real goal in medical dentistry.The concept of dental hygiene and restoration extends far beyond the oral cavity as many links are madein this daybetween oral health and systemic disease such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.Asstarted in private practice dentistry, Ibegan to look for ways to give back to the community that supported me throughout mychildhood and educational pursuit of acareer in dentistry.My partner, Richard Bennett, introduced me to the Good News Clinic as he currently serves as President of the Board of Directors. I was greatly surprisedthat access to quality dental carein our community was so limited until the birth of this clinic.Under the Good News Clinic, I am privileged to serve with over forty other dedicated volunteer dental practitioners providing care for the underserved. We focus on dental hygiene, restoration, and nutritional support. Being able to relieve a patient in pain is a reward that cannot calculated in dollars and cents. Most of our patients have never had the opportunity to receive routine dental care due to the unavailability of dental insurance and financial hardship.Many have suffered from
dangerous dental infections for weeks before professional advice could be obtained.In fact, my paternal great grandfather died from “Ludwig’s Angina”-a condition originating from a dental root abcess. This family tale reaffirms my conviction that prophylactic dental care should be offered to all members of our community as an important ingredient in one’s general health care. Our trip during life, in the big picture of the universe, is brief.All of us should strive to allow our peers to enjoy an acceptable, comfortable quality of life-regardless of their financial status. The reward for being able to improve these patient’s lives is immeasurable. I selfishly wonder after my days of volunteering at the Good News Clinic who has actually gained more from the experience.....the patient or myself. The gratitude that these patients expressafter receiving care is completely heartwarming.I have seen many patients drop any little amount of spare money they may have with them on that day into the donation box as they leave to help keep the clinic open and running for others.That is the true meaning of philanthropy.Whatever your talents may be: medical, dental, social, secretarial, pharmaceutical, or emotional, the Good News Clinic can benefit from you.....and you will undoubtedly benefit from it.
