A Note from the President...

The Thanksgiving season is almost upon us! It is that time of year that reminds us to give thanks. Is giving thanks truly just a season or do we remember it all year long? I can say without knowing each and every one of you personally, that we all have so much to be thankful for. One of my best friends and a sustainer, Kim Powell, always sends out a list of those things she is thankful for as we enter into the Thanksgiving season. It is filled with friends and family, special moments and those little things that happen in a day. I know her well enough to realize that she is truly thankful every day, but it makes me wonder how many of these daily moments I let pass by without recognizing the gift. There are many in our community who are looking for those thankful moments in a day.

As members of the Junior League, we are a part of an organization that helps make another person’s day – a thankful day. Someone during this thanksgiving season will give thanks because all of us cared enough to volunteer. During our membership meetings, we will spotlight our agencies and hear from one of our members about her placement and the difference that her hours are making in someone’s life. We will never know how many lives we touch and change forever. We will never know how many “Thanksgiving Thankful” lists we are on. But each of us will forever be a part of someone’s life that needed a giving spirit.

I hope that each of you have a very special Thanksgiving. As you give thanks, be sure to remember those who are struggling without a loved one, those who are separated by many miles and those who are scared, hungry, or cold. Be full of thanks and thankful that we have the ability to give.

Will our Thanksgiving be only for a season or will we use our abilities to give someone else thankful days?

Wow what a fun year! We had a great time working on Thrift Sale and have so many people to thank. A very big thanks to our incredibly hard working and dedicated Thrift Sale committee chairs. Leanne, Sabrina, Keri and Jennifer we have had a wonderful year working with you and getting to know each of you better. Thrift Sale is no small effort and all the hours you worked made this year another success!

We would also like to thank our sustainer advisors Cindy Wilson and Heather Hayes. You were always there to offer suggestions and help out where you saw a need. Thank you to the past Thrift Sale chairs Jennifer Stowe, Lynn Carter and Liza Chapman who offered their leadership and experience from years past. Thank you to our incredibly organized treasurers Dawn Wood and Emily Gaddy. We truly appreciate all you do behind the scenes to make Thrift Sale flow smoothly.

Aspecial thanks to the voice of this year’s Thrift Sale, Mary Meadows and our floor translator Emily Embry. Thank you to Bethany Sauls and Katie Dubnik, communications chair and assistant chair for all your help with promotions, radio spots and League Log ads. Heather Perry, this year ’s preview party co-chair, thank you for all your help with coordinating the silent and live auction packages and decorations for this year’s “Rockin’Sale!” And to the entire League, thank you for your willingness to donate your time and items to this year ’s Thrift Sale. We could never do this without you! Charity Ball 2007 Placement News

The 56th annual Charity Ball is around the corner! Held on December 8th, we are excited to bring a little “sunshine” to the holiday season with fabulous beach music from The Tams! Our assistant co-chairs Liza Chapman and Staci Vinton have been busy planning and securing our Belle candidates. We want this to be an unforgettable Charity Ball!

Those of you on Charity Ball committee will be getting your placement information soon, so be ready to get involved! You will be asked to serve on the decorations, work shift, or sustainer call committee. Please look for this information in the mail and on our website.

We are appreciative of our participating clubs and the special young ladies they have chosen to represent them as Belle candidates. The candidates will be working extremely hard in the weeks to come. Their efforts enable the Junior League to continue to provide support and service to our wonderful community. We will be introducing the 2007 candidates to you at the November membership meeting. Please thank them for their hard work and support. We appreciate each of you and your support in making the 2007 Charity Ball a lasting memory.

Quinlan Art Camp

If you have a week to spare next summer, you may want to consider completing your placement at Quinlan Art Camp. The Quinlan Art Center holds a camp each summer for children ages 5 to 14. There are 5 two week sessions, and you may choose one of the 10 weeks to volunteer. If art is not your area of expertise, it is okay. The very talented staff provides the creativity. As a volunteer you are just expected to encourage and assist the enthusiastic campers complete their projects.

Each year, the camper’s art projects relate to the overall camp “theme,”such as nature or ancient art. The campers really enjoy exploring different art forms, even if it means going home with a little paint on their faces or paper Mache’paste in their hair. I was inspired and amazed by the talent and uninhibited creativity of the campers. At the end of each two week session, the campers have the opportunity to set up an actual gallery displaying their work for their families. They are so proud to show their work.

While the campers are the best part of the placement, another plus is the great sense of accomplishment you feel having completed your placement before the first League meeting in September This will give you an “extra” hour each week in your busy schedule to volunteer at your child’s school, serve on a board of directors, serve your church, or perform additional League work.

It’s time again to solicit grants from local agencies. If you know of any worthwhile organization that is aligned with the mission of the League and not currently submitting a grant application, please contact Dawn Wood (770-534-3600) or Helen Maginnis at the League office with the agency’s contact details.

On Saturday October 13, 2007 we attended the fall meeting of the State Public Affairs Committee in Athens, Georgia. Joan Prittie, executive director of Project Safe in Athens, discussed the epidemic of violence against women and State Representative Doug McKillip provided a legislative update. Additionally, Steve Jones, Superior Court Judge and chairman of Partners for a Prosperous Athens, spoke about working to solve a county's poverty problem. We are looking forward to the start of the legislative session and providing more updates to the League.
