The fall season is my favorite time of year. I anxiously await the smell of pumpkin muffins fresh out of the oven on a cool, crisp day and watching the leaves turn various shades of red, orange and yellow each year. I enjoy the sights and smells this time of year for sure but most of all I love the thanksgiving season. As Theodore Roosevelt said, “Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.”

There is no doubt that times are tough for many right now. Some are struggling financially; others are grieving the loss of a family member, close friend or even a dear family pet; and some are just frustrated by not being where they thought they would be at a certain point in life—maybe relationship-wise, family-wise or career-wise. We have League members in each of these categories yet many of these members continue to do all that they can to help others going through their own tough times.

We had our first distribution of food boxes at Chicopee Woods and Fair Street Elementary Schools in mid-September through the Feeding Our Future program. So many League members and others in our community have helped this program get from just the great idea stage to a reality, and I am honored to be associated with such wonderful people who want to help others. While at one of the schools, a little boy who came with his parents and sister to pick up their box of food just kept hugging the two League volunteers delivering the food to the family’s car, which was held together in many places with duct tape. The parents were very appreciative and you could tell that the children were feeling a sense of relief along with their parents. There are similar stories of families being able to obtain needed items at Thrift Sale this year. I thank each of you who has supported Thrift Sale and Feeding Our Future in any way so far and for what you will do in the future to help with these great League projects.

This time of year is also a very exciting time for the league in getting ready for one of our largest fundraisers—Charity Ball. What a fantastic group of teenage girls we have this year. If it’s not the largest, we have one of the largest groups of Belle candidates ever. We have nine great young ladies and sponsoring clubs this year, and they have already been hard at work in raising money! As you know, the monies raised through Charity Ball and Thrift Sale go to further efforts under the League’s current Strengthening Families Initiative as well as to support local agencies in line with the League’s mission. Apercentage of monies raised each year is also set aside so that every five years the League can award its Signature Grant. The Signature Grant was first awarded a decade ago and we are fortunate enough to award our third Signature Grant this league year.

In closing, please know how very thankful I am to be a part of this League and this community. You are appreciated and you make a difference. Let’s continue doing what we do best: working together to make this community a better place!

Health

Position Statement:

The State Public Affairs Committee of the Junior Leagues of Georgia recognizes that access to quality health care is vital to the wellbeing of women and children in the State of Georgia. We acknowledge that the Junior Leagues of Georgia have a responsibility in shaping Georgia’s health care policies. The State Public Affairs Committee of the Junior Leagues of Georgia will, therefore, support and promote responsible programs, policies, and concepts that lead to improvements in health care for women, children, and families in the State of Georgia.

Public Stands:

1. Support efforts to promote early, affordable and continuous prenatal care to all families.

2. Support services to mentally and physically challenged children and adolescents, which provide:

a. community based services to children in their own home

b. community residential alternatives to hospitalization funds for more slots for children currently on the c. waiting list to receive services.

Education

Position Statement:

Public Stands:

1. Support efforts that provide for early intervention for Georgia’s high-risk families and children, including family support services to improve a child’s physical, cognitive, language, speech and psychosocial development.

2. Support educational programs for families and children that promote self-esteem and personal responsibility.

3. Support and promote programs, policies and concepts which encourage and support effective quality parenting.

Welfare

The State Public Affairs Committee of the Junior Leagues of Georgia recognizes that, at times, the welfare of women and children in the State of Georgia may be at risk. We acknowledge that the Junior Leagues of Georgia have a responsibility to serve the needs of women and children at risk and to assist in alleviating these problems. The State Public Affairs Committee of the Junior Leagues of Georgia will, therefore, support and promote responsible programs, policies, and concepts that lead to improvements in the safety and welfare of women and children in the State of Georgia.

Public Stands:

1. Support efforts to promote services that promote safety and prevention of child abuse and to ensure that these services are available to parents and caretakers of children.

2. Support efforts to promote accessible, affordable and high quality child care, including after school and summer care for school aged children with the objective of supervision and delinquency prevention.

3. The Junior Leagues of Georgia find that human trafficking is unacceptable. We support the creation and enforcement of laws that prevent the importation and detainment of women and children for the purposes of exploitation. We also endorse the funding efforts to provide victim services for those affected by human trafficking. We support the treatment of children who are victims of this exploitation.

4. The Junior Leagues of Georgia acknowledge that children are spending more and more time online, leading to the increased risk of predation and other cyber crimes. As there are few means of controlling the safety of the online environment, we support the development of comprehensive online safety programs, laws to prevent and prosecute cyber crimes and educational programs to help children avoid this type of victimization.

5. The Junior Leagues of Georgia support legislation and other efforts, including but not limited to educational efforts to protect and/or increase the safety of women and/or children on Georgia roads.

6. Support legislation and other efforts that focus on improving critical education and health care services for all children in foster care, as well as, preparing older foster youth for adulthood.

It’s that time of year again! Charity Ball is right around the corner and we are so thrilled to be celebrating 59 years of this tradition! We have nine terrific Belle Candidates this year that are already hard at work in our community in their efforts to raise funds for our charities…you may have even met them at Thrift Sale selling biscuits and snacks. We are so honored to have each of them and so thankful to their sponsoring clubs for helping make Charity Ball such a worthwhile event. Along with the Belles and our fantastic Co-Chairs, Suzie and Sally, we have also been hard at work in our plans to make Charity Ball an event to remember! Those of you who attended the Ball last year will be glad to hear that The Platinum Band will be playing once again this year…so, get ready to dance and have a great time! The Ball Room at Chattahoochee Country Club will take on a classic and modern feel as we transform it into “AChinioserie Christmas.” And as if great food, great music and great company were not enough, add shopping to the list for the evening as Elizabeth Latta introduces our first ever Charity Ball Silent Auction. She has fabulous packages to offer us including trips and get-aways that will make the perfect Christmas gift for yourself or someone you know! We are so excited to be part of putting together this great evening and this great tradition in Gainesville-Hall County. Make sure to mark your calendars for Saturday, December 11, 2010 for Charity Ball. The event is from 8pm to midnight at Chattahoochee Country Club. Your tickets are included in your dues, so you have already paid for this great evening! Please let all your friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbors know that tickets can be purchased for $75/single, $125/couple and $500 for a table of 10. Ticket sales can be designated to a Belle’s “box”, so

make sure to specify which Belle they would like to contribute to. We look forward to seeing you in December for “AChinioserie Christmas.”

I am a senior at North Hall High School, busy juggling college applications and “senioritis.” I have been fortunate to have participated in Youth Leadership Hall County last year, and understand the importance of supporting our community. I look forward to helping the League do just that!

I can’t wait until the final day where all the girls’ hard work and dedication becomes reality at the Charity Ball 2010.

I am a Junior at Gainesville High School and am the Junior Representative for Thespian Troupe 2445, a member of Beta Club, Spanish Honors Society, FCAand Key Club. As a member of First Baptist Church I sing in the Sonlight choir, high school ensemble, play the handbells and am Secretary/ Treasurer for the choir. I play Varsity Tennis and am a Varsity Football/Basketball Cheerleader. I was able to travel to Copenhagen for the Rotary International Conference a couple of years ago so I am now deeply honored to be the Belle Candidate for the Rotary Club of Gainesville.

What an unexpected honor it is to be asked to represent the Jaycees for this year’s Charity Ball!I have started my Senior year at Gainesville High, and although I’ve enjoyed a wide variety of activities there— Varsity Football and Basketball Cheerleading, Young Life, Mentoring to mention a few— this opportunity is sure to be one of the highlights ofmy farewell term.Being a Belle candidate, working together with the other girls and my sponsor to raise funds for our community should prove to be quite a learning experience and I am more than grateful for that.

I have enjoyed serving our community by volunteering at Gainesville Aid Project (GAP), Meals-On-Wheels, Partner ’s Club, and I’m currently serving as a Mentor. I am honored to represent the Lanierland Civitan Club as their Belle Candidate.

I am involved in many school activities such as Partners Club, Varsity tennis and Competition Cheerleading. What is hummus? When we asked the 3rd graders at Fair Street none of them knew what it was or had ever tried it until Kids in the Kitchen stopped in for a visit. On October 6, Kids in the Kitchen, with the help of some of our active and sustaining members, went to five 3rd grade classes at Fair Street Elementary. While we were there we let the children explore some restaurant menus and discussed the healthier choices that were included on each of them. Then they worked together in small groups to create a fictional restaurant menu to include at least two healthy items. After

sharing their creative menus, they had an opportunity to Stack-A-Healthy Snack making choices from three trays, cracker-protein-produce, and then selected different items to make their own creation. It was so gratifying to see how excited the kids were to have us all there and to know that we were making a great impact by encouraging them to make healthy choices while also exposing them to some food items they have never had before. Thank you to those who took time out of your day to make the difference in the lives of some precious little ones! Kids in the Kitchen will have a representative at INK on October 23 and November 20. Hope to see you there and be on the lookout for our October “Food for Thought” newsletter soon.

We tried this Kids in the Kitchen recipe and the kids loved it. It was fun and very healthy! We substituted the lean ground beef for ground turkey which made the recipe even healthier and the children didn’t even notice the difference. We would love for you to try any of the recipes that can be found at www.kidsinthekitchen.ajli.org and tell us how your family enjoyed it. We will feature any entries in future League Logs or emails.

Thrift Sale Wrap-Up Thrift Sale Wrap-Up

We had a great 45th Thrift Sale this year!! We are happy to have provided low-cost donated items to over 1100 families before noon on Sale Day! It would not have been successful without the help of the entire Junior League membership. We appreciate everyone’s hard work over the summer, the week of Thrift Sale and on Sale Day. We are very thankful to our sustaining members for all of your generous donations. Thrift Sale would not be a success without

all of the members’involvement; thank you very much!

We would also like to thank our Thrift Sale Committee Chairs, Meredith McEver, Melanie Hill, Regina Summerour and Leslie Miller for working so hard this year! We would also like to thank Kelly Lee for being our Sustainer Advisor. Also, a big thank you to LeAnne Gilleland and Tiffany Whitmire for making sure the behind the scenes work went

smoothly! We also appreciate Mary Meadows for being our dependable translator throughout Sale Day. We could not have done it without the help of the past Thrift Sale Chairs as well. Thank you for all of your help!

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The New Member Class made it through their first thrift sale experience and got to see just what the Junior League can do for this comunity. In November we will kick off one of two of our own New Member Projects to be completed this year. The first will pair with Julie Nicholson and the Feeding our Future commmitee to come up with

this year. We would also like to recognize Holly Ann Pratt for hergenerous donation, which won her the award of Sustaining Member Prize Girl! Thank you both LeAnne and Holly Ann!

some exciting ways we can get involved and provide some much needed holiday cheer for our sponsored families. December will be a time for celebration with a Christmas party at the home of Eliza Baker. Get ready for some fun!

Reflections on Leadership and the League

Lee Highsmith is a sustaining member of the Junior League and the development and marketing director at Challenged Child and Friends. During her time in the League, Lee served as editor of the League Log, Cookbook Chair and in a placement at Center Point.

Leadership Training and Development Chair

“I owe so much to the Junior League,” says Lee. “What is invaluable about the League, is that it affords you the opportunity to step outside your field of formal training and learn a whole new skill set. It taught me more about life and business than I ever learned in a classroom. Nothing I ever did was wasted, the friendships and connections have been for a life-time.”

In fact, the League had a direct impact on Lee’s career path into nonprofits.

“As an early childhood education major, I was able to make the jump into nonprofit administration and marketing largely due to the experiences I gained in the League such as editing the League Log, running the cookbook and planning events such as our big anniversary celebration.”

Over the years, Lee has also been very active in Gainesville/Hall County. When not dawning her talents on the stage in Community Summer Theater, she has stayed involved by serving on the board of directors for Wonderquest, Alliance for Literacy, Gainesville High School Theater Friends and the Gainesville City School System. Currently, Lee is serving on the board of Camp Glisson; as the chair of Gainesville First United Methodist Church’s Church Council; as co-chair of Rotary’s job shadowing day; and has been a hospital volunteer for the Medical Center Auxiliary for 27 years.

She is also the mother of five children, Katie (a provisional member of the League this year), Drew, Kenimer, Angie and Ginnie. She and her husband J.C., “Bucky,” were able to strengthen their family by instilling leadership skills and self-confidence in their children at an early age.

“We developed our family by spending time together in activities we could all participate in such as camping, in church activities or in summer theater,” says Lee. “We also instilled a since of responsibility by assigning them chores each Saturday and by having a family meeting each Sunday evening about the weeks events.”

The League surrounds its members with so many amazing women. It is a privilege to have an opportunity to learn from the experiences of those who have come before us to make the most of our own League experience.

Shining Stars

Our shining star for September goes to Ashley Mixon, our Placement Chair. She has coordinated a number of projects throughout the summer for active and sustainer members and has been extremely understanding and willing to go well beyond the extra mile to help out and assist anyone having any questions about placement.

Our shining star for October goes to Christina Jones and Pyper Macloskie, our Thrift Sale Co-Chairs. Even though these tough economic times might have been challenging, they worked together to make sure that the event would be successful and everything go smoothly. Great job!

What League member influenced your personal development?

CRPD UPDATE

This year we will be awarding our third Signature Grant. Below, please find details about our Signature Grant. Applications are on our website if anyone knows of an agency who might be interested in applying that has not yet.

Gerran Syfan CRPD Chair

The Signature Grant is awarded every five (5) years to an agency in Hall County that meets the League’s mission and is actively involved in bettering the community through ongoing programs and projects. This year’s grant award will be $50,000.

Please note several important dates and guidelines for the Signature Grant application:

All Applications must be submitted to the Junior League on or before November 30, 2010. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered. Submission details are included in the application.

Submission of the Signature Grant application does not entitle the organization to funding. Signature Grant decisions will be announced in early 2011 as described in the application.

The project, program or other reason for the Signature Grant request must directly promote the Mission and Vision of the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County that is set forth in the application.

FEEDING OUR FUTURE

Feeding Our Future is off to a great start! The program was kicked off with a community food drive in August resulting in approximately 2,000 lbs. of food collected. The first distribution of food was held in September providing 25 families with 2 boxes of food each to help supplement their existing food sources. The distribution was a success and the families were very appreciative. As many as 50 families are anticipated for the October distribution which will be administered by League Sustainers. The New Member Class will distribute the food boxes for the November distribution.

There is an ongoing need for food and/or monetary donations. The MOSTNEEDED items for the food pantry include: Canned Meats, Canned Fruits, Canned Vegetables, Cooking Oil, Whole grain or low sugar cereal, Jelly, Peanut Butter, Tuna, Bagged Beans, Tortillas, Spaghetti noodles or pasta, Spaghetti or tomato sauce, Oatmeal or oats, Flour, Shampoo, Soap, Laundry Detergent. (Please avoid small snack size cans or servings). If you would like to make a monetary donation, please contact the League Office at 770-535-1951

Each year, about 250,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer. anks to screening mammography, doctors are able to spot very small breast cancers in the early stages before they grow, and potentially threaten a woman’s life.

e Breast Center at e Longstreet Clinic offers the latest diagnostic techniques and provides prompt, accurate evaluation of any breast problem. Services include: We are: Early detection is the best protection. Doctors recommend that every woman age 40 and older have a yearly mammogram, and statistics show that women who get screened regularly have a 30 percent lower risk of dying from breast cancer.

PLACEMENT SPOTLIGHT

DONE-IN-A-DAY EVENTS

Although Done-In-A-Day (“DIAD”) projects are a relatively new development for our League, they have become a valuable part of our service to the community as well as a new option for earning placement hours. Over the past 5 months, I have been able to participate in three DIAD events: Friends of Recovery 5K Race, the Women’s Source Power of the Purse Fashion Show and Main Street Gainesville’s Art in the Square.

At the Friends of Recovery 5K Race, I worked the registration table and handed out t-shirts to race participants. At the Women’s Source Power of the Purse Fashion Show, I manned the hair and make-up room and ensured that the models were ready to walk the runway. At the Art on the Square event, I solicited sales for our League cookbooks and helped out other booths (such as Challenged Child) as needed. And at each event I had a great time.

These DIAD events differ from the League’s normal placements in a number of ways. First, they provide an opportunity to earn large chunks of placement hours as opposed to one or two hours at a time. For example, I earned approximately four and one half hours of service time at each of the three DIAD events listed above – to earn the same amount of hours at my normal placement, it would have taken me more than two and a half months to earn the hours that I earned in three afternoons.

Second, DIAD events have given me an opportunity to better know some of my fellow League members. At my normal placement, I work alone and do not see any other League members. On the other hand, at DIAD events, I work along side fellow League members to help make another person or organization’s event a success. In these hours working together, I have developed quite a few relationships with great girls that I might not have otherwise met. Last, these DIAD events are a great service to the organizations that host the events. Some of these organizations only have one or two big fundraisers a year, and our support in helping them with such events is most appreciated. So, if you have not yet participated in a DIAD event, I would highly encourage you to consider doing so.
