A Note from the President...

It is a great time to attend the March Junior League meeting! We must have a quorum to vote on our budget and the slate of nominees, so I look forward to seeing all of you in a few days. After the meeting everyone is invited to a social at Scott’s restaurant on the square. I hope that our sustainers will join us. I expect it will be a lot of fun, and a great chance to get to know more inspiring women.

During this year we have heard from several of our members, whether during a meeting or in the League Log, of their joy of how they are serving as volunteers in our community. The placement hours that are given throughout our community are needed and appreciated. So many agencies depend on our volunteers, and I’m glad that so many of our members have found the perfect placement for them. We are accomplishing our mission of sending out trained volunteers who will make it a lifetime of giving of their time to help others.

As you look through your League Log, please notice that we would like to give an award to one of our many deserving sustainers. There are so many of you who have truly made a lifetime of volunteering. You are the perfect example of what the League desires to accomplish. I hope that each of you will send in your accomplishments within our community or you can also nominate one of our worthy sustainers.

I can never say enough about those sustainers who understand the value of learning from other Leagues around the country. There are many of you who worked for several years to make our League a part of our international organization. We had a group of 10 active members who attended a conference in Charlotte. The workshops on their own are well worth the fee to attend, but the conversations that you have with other women, whose mission is to better someone else’s life, are priceless. We hope to use many of these ideas to continue to improve our League. Many thanks to Butch Miller with Milton Martin Honda who was kind enough to donate a van and driver for our trip to Charlotte. If you see Butch please extend your thanks as well.

There are so many of you who give of your time and talents selflessly Your work does not go unnoticed. Thank you so much, whether you’re a sustainer, an active, or provisional. Your dedication is humbling and inspiring, and a great example of what I aspire to be!

March Social

March 4th immediately following the general membership meeting, we will have a social at a new local restaurant Scott’s on the Square. Everyone will be responsible for their own food and drink. There will be a few light appetizers provided. I hope everyone takes advantage of the time after the meeting to socialize and mingle with ladies that you have met in the Jr. League. Whether you decide to stay for a while or just a few minutes, come by.I look forward to seeing you there!

Idalu Slack Award

Idalu Slack, the founder of the Junior League of Gainesville Hall County, was a visionary. This year our Junior League has established an award in her name. There are many sustaining members who have made differences, changed lives, improved our community and continued to live out the vision and mission of the Junior League after your active years had ended. Recognition for your amazing efforts is long overdue. We are looking forward to presenting the first annual Idalu Slack Award to a deserving sustainer at the May Meeting.

We are taking nominations for the award now so please send a list of accomplishments or a description of a project(s) that you or another sustaining member were involved in that exemplifies your/her continued commitment to the mission and vision of the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County. We will accept nominations until April 15, 2008. Nominations or questions can be sent to Christina White, President-Elect. Please make sure the nomination is clearly marked for the Idalu Slack Award.

Placement News

When trying to decide where to request my placement for the 20072008 year, I found the WonderQuest description very appealing. I was interested in working with elementary age children since I have not had a chance to do so thus far. The experience turned out to be wonderful for me. During my placement, WonderQuest and Gainesville Theater Alliance presented the performance of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” for local schools as well as many outside the community. The set, stage, actors and costumes were all amazing. Kara Rogers, McCree Simmons and I worked together to assist hundreds of young children as they anxiously waited to see the play. During the evening performances we helped scan tickets, seat theater goers and sell merchandise. We also assisted in hosting a reception to allow children and patrons an opportunity to mingle and meet with the actors in the play. The WonderQuest placement lasted approximately two weeks, and we had so much fun! Not only did the three of us working on our placement begin a lasting friendship, we were also able to see what an incredible asset the Gainesville Theater Alliance is to our community. The performances were breathtaking and enjoyed by all.

Join Us to Get Fit and Stay Fit!

Don’t forget to join us for the Consumers Life Get Fit Stay Fit 5K Corporate Run/Walk hosted by the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. The Junior League is sponsoring two teams – one for active members and one for sustainers. The 5K is scheduled for Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Riverside Military Academy at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit children’s programs in Hall County. To register, fill out an application at the League office or the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce. Get Fit, Stay Fit “Spirit Team”

If you are not able to participate in the Run/Walk, please volunteer to be on the “Spirit Team” to cheer on all the ladies representing the Jr. League. Any actives or sustainers are welcome. If you are interested, please contact Lynn Carter at lynncarterdc@yahoo.com or 404-358-7021.

On February 26 Juliet Aldridge and Julia Greene attended the “Leagues and Legislators: Building a Better Georgia Together.”The day began with a tour of Grady Hospital, a photo with the Governor and a tour of the Capital. That evening, the Leagues sponsored a Legislative Reception providing a wonderful opportunity to meet and speak with our own representatives. The following morning a breakfast was sponsored by the Voices for Georgia’s Children. On a side note, Senator Michael Meyer von Bremen (D-Albany) is proposing a resolution to honor the efforts of Junior Leagues in Georgia.
