A NOTEFROMTHE PRESIDENT

It is so hard to believe that we have already passed the half way mark of the 2011-2012 Junior League Year. May Dinner will be here before we know it, but we have some very important decisions upcoming in the next few months. Very soon, members of the Finance and Nominating committees will be gathering together to decide on the allotment of funds to the agencies that we serve and the future leadership of the League. Even though Thrift Sale and Charity Ball are behind us, there is much work to be done.

Liza Chapman President

With this being said, we are going to have a different kind of meeting theme for the January General Membership meeting. It is going to a town hall format, and I would like to encourage all new, active and sustainer members to attend. The Board of Directors wants to address current and future issues that are affecting our membership and League. We will be discussing the future of placements and League-wide initiatives along with the restructuring of the JLBoard of Directors. This is an opportunity for everyone’s voices to be heard, so please plan to attend this very important meeting on Tuesday, January 3, 2012.

The 60th Annual Charity Ball was an absolute success. More than $100,000 was raised, and this would not have been possible without leadership of the Charity Ball committee, the civic organizations which sponsored the seven beautiful Belle candidates, and the families and friends of our Belles. Suzie Hawkins and Sally Pittman did a fantastic job organizing the event and the committee this year. These two amazing ladies were well supported by Katie Dubnik, Elizabeth Latta, Cindy Barrett and Emily Bishop. My thanks goes out to all of you. Without the sponsoring organizations, Charity Ball would not have been the huge success that it was. The League extends its fullest gratitude to Elks Lodge #1126, Evening Optimist Club, Gainesville Jaycess, Gainesville Rotary, Kiwanis, Lanieland Civitans and South Hall Rotary. Congratulations to Molly Gay, representing the Gainesville Jaycess, for being crowned this year’s Belle of the Ball! We can’t thank each of the Belles and their families enough for being part of this great Gainesville-Hall County tradition!

2012 is going to be an amazing year for the JLGHC! I can’t wait to get to feedback from everyone on January 3 as this information will be used to assist with the future planning of our League. Our strategic planning will be vital in order for us to maintain the excellence we have always had in the past and to continue that tradition of excellence into the future. I look forward to seeing what impact we make on the community in 2012.

Happy New Year!

LizaVision Statement

Strengthening Families is excited to introduce the inaugural “HEALTHYHABITS”: AChild & Family Wellness Expo. The Junior League of Gainesville Hall County, the United Way of Hall County and the Interactive Neighborhood for Kids (INK) will be working together to make this an event you won’t want to miss.

It will be held on Sunday, March 25, at INK from 1 to 4 p.m. The expo will provide many resources and opportunities for children and their families to join in the fight against childhood obesity

Families who attend the expo will gain perspective on how to incorporate physical activity and healthy nutritional habits into everyday routines, as well as the importance of preventive healthcare.

Distribution News:

Aspecial “Thank You” to the League New Member Class for their help with the December food distribution. The new members helped by packing the food boxes and distributing the food to the families. Your help was greatly appreciated!

Also in December, League members donated board games to the program which were given to the families at distribution to wish them a Merry Christmas!

Food Pantry News:

Professionals from the fields of healthcare, nutrition, exercise physiology and sports, mental health and many more will be participating as exhibitors as well as educators. The event is expected to be a large, communitywide event requiring the help of many volunteers.

The Strengthening Families Committee is asking for the help of all League members and Sustainers on this day. You will receive additional information soon and be asked to sign up for a work shift on the day of the Expo.

If you have questions or would like more information about participating in the Expo, please contact Mandy Bangs at stephensmandy@bellsouth.net

Apartnership between the Junior League and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank

Aspecial “Thank You” to Dr. George Danns and his Social Problems Class at Gainesville State College. The class hosted a food drive in November to benefit Feeding Our Future. The items collected were presented to League representatives on November 22nd. We truly appreciate

Dr. Danns’ continued support of the program! Thank you!

Based on the most needed items in the Food Pantry, the following are the specific requests for the upcoming months:

“Jelly January” – Jars of jelly “FillerFebruary” – Filler items (Muffin Mix, Pudding/Jello Mix, Crackers, Granola Bars)

Please bring your food donations to the General Membership Meetings or drop them off at the League Office.

If you have any questions regarding the Feeding Our Future program, please contact PyperMacloskie at pmacloskie@bellsouth.net, Julia Greene at jgreene@hallcounty.org or Julie Nicholson at julie.nicholson@cbtonline.com.

If you would like to have some fun while educating our youth on the importance of taking care of their bodies, then join Kids in the Kitchen on our next elementary school outing. We are heading to Chicopee Woods on January 12th and it promises to be an experience you won’t want to miss.

In December, we took our program to both Centennial Arts Academy and the White Sulphur Elementary Fitness Club. Each interactive lesson teaches healthy food choices, physical fitness, oral hygiene and the importance of overall health maintenance while incorporating games, exercise and even dance. It is truly a joy to watch these children get so excited about participating in our very own wellness “TVShow”.

If you would like to come out and get involved with our youth, please contact Shelley Davis at shelleysegall@yahoo.com. We would like to say a special thank you to Julie Nicholson and Julia Cromartie for all of their help and support. It was much appreciated.

HEALTH TIP

Childhood is the perfect time for a child to develop good health habits. If a child grows up eating right, getting plenty of exercise, getting the right amount of sleep and practicing good hygiene, the greater the chance those healthy habits will stick with her into adulthood.

Our sympathies go out to the family of Ada McCrum, a Sustainer member of the Junior League who recently passed away.

Congratulations to Molly Gay who was crowned the 2011 Belle of the Ball at the 60th annual Charity Ball, on December 10, 2011! She and the other belle candidates did a great job raising money for local charities supported by the Junior League.

Thank you not only to the Belle candidates and their families for all your hard work, but also to the sponsoring clubs – Gainesville Jaycees, Gainesville Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, Lanierland Civitan, Kiwanis Club, South Hall Rotary and Evening Optimist Club –for your continued support of the community and the Junior League.

Special thanks to Nancy Norton, our Sustainer Advisor for Charity Ball and to Sustainer Martha Zoller, our emcee for the evening. Thank you also to everyone who helped make the evening such a success.

Spotlight on Charity Ball Co-Chairs

Sally Pittman Sally Pittman Suzie Hawkins Suzie Hawkins

Sally has been involved with the Junior League for three years. Last year she was one of the assistant cochairs for the Charity Ball. This year, along with Suzie Hawkins, she serves as cochair for Charity Ball.

Sally has had a great experience and cannot say enough great things about Suzie and working with her! Aside from her placements in the League, Sally served as co-chair with Christina Jones for the teen volunteer summer program at Northeast Georgia Medical Center

The Junior League has been a wonderful experience for Sally. She is originally from South Carolina and moved to Gainesville after marrying her husband, Zach. The Junior League has provided her the opportunity to meet many wonderful ladies and members of the community. Sally really appreciates all the friends she has made in the Junior League that have made it so much easier to become a part of a new town.

Sally and Zach have been married for a little over three years. They have a precious little boy, Brooks, and a dog named Moose. She is a member of Grace Episcopal Church and also teaches preschool there. Sally enjoys reading, running and cheering for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks!

302 Bradford Street NW • Gainesville 770-536-0511

Suzie has been involved in the Junior League for five years. She has served as Assistant Hospitality Chair, Hospitality Chair and Assistant Charity Ball Co-Chair. This year she currently Co-Chairs the Charity Ball with Sally Pittman. She has loved working in all positions. Suzie has really enjoyed the freedom that the internal placements offer. The Junior League has influenced Suzie in a couple of ways. For one, the Junior League gets her out of the house! She is so happy to have time with friends who also provide service to the community. Suzie is glad to be a part of something in her local community that supports families.

Liza Chapman has been an inspirational figure in the League for Suzie. Liza has been a tremendously supportive president. Suzie thinks that she is very open to new ideas, which is inspiring and motivating. She feels Liza has given all that we have needed and always offered more.

Suzie and her husband, Ben, are high school sweethearts. They have three children, Anne, 3, Benny, 2, and Jane, 4 months. She was a middle school math teacher, but now stays at home with their children. Ben is a dentist and University of Georgia football fan. They live in Longstreet Hills and attend St. Michael Catholic Church in Gainesville.
