A NOTEFROMTHE PRESIDENT
“Well, time sure flies when you are having fun,” is such a true quote, and the members of the Junior League of Gainesville-Hall County must be having a great time. It seems like just a few days ago that we were celebrating in friendship and service at our annual May Dinner. League activities haven’t slowed or cooled down one bit over the past few months as this summer is getting hotter and hotter each day, and we are becoming busier and busier as the 2011-12 League year gets under way.
I am so excited about the direction our League is going with the recent changes to placement opportunities and reporting of our time. Janna Mallis and Christina Jones, along with Ashley Mixon’s leadership this past League year, have communicated everyone’s placement responsibilities to both our members and the agencies we serve. Many volunteer hours have already been logged, including those dedicated to Strengthening Families and Feeding Our Future.
Families have continued to receive food and nourishment over the summer months, and 100 additional families will receive assistance through our League-wide initiative beginning in September. Julie Nicholson, Julia Greene and Pyper Macloskie have done an amazing job gearing up for the four new schools that we will be taking on. Meredith West has been communicating the activities of Feeding Our Future to the committee members and assisting with the assignment of placement hours.
The home of Feeding Our Future also is the new home of the JLGHC. We recently moved into Suite C of the North Georgia Community Foundation campus. This is an exciting opportunity for the League and will allow us to have our administrative office and the FOF food pantry under one roof. I would like to thank Gerran Syfan, President-Elect, for chairing the Suite C renovation committee.
With the move to the new office suite, I would like to welcome Robin Smith to the League’s administrative assistant position. Robin lives with her husband and children in Dawsonville, and we are fortunate to have her with us. She is a true asset to our League, and we look forward to having her manage the new office. Please stop by and introduce yourself to Robin if you haven’t already done so. The office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
During June, Lindsay Smithson was busy planning our annual Leadership Retreat that was held at Lake Lanier Islands. Committee chairs and the board of directors joined together to plan for the upcoming League year In addition, Jane Peck from Peck and Associates of Charleston, S.C., lead the group through a day-long training on servant leadership. More information is to come throughout the year regarding servant leadership. Thank you, Lindsay, for your planning and assisting with the retreat.
The Fund Development committee, under the leadership of Kay Parks and Elizabeth Thompson, has been hard at work redesigning the levels of League sponsorship and formulating a fundraising plan with the Thrift Sale and Charity Ball committees. This partnership should ensure a successful fundraising year for the League. Thrift Sale and Charity Ball committees have all been extremely busy this summer planning for the Oct. 1 and Dec.10 events. We can’t wait to hear about the exciting plans.
As the summer begins to cool down, the League year will be in full swing and it will be September before we know it. I look forward to seeing everyone at the General Membership Meeting on Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. Dinner will be served. I am excited to see what Melanie Couch and the Hospitality Committee have planned for us. The 2011-12 League year is going to fly by because we are going to have so much fun serving together the community of Gainesville-Hall County!

Exciting News for Feeding Our Future!
The Feeding our Future program, a partnership between the Junior League and the Georgia Mountain Food Bank, will be expanding to six schools starting in September 2011. Last year when the program began we had a total of 50 families enrolled from two schools. This fall we will begin providing monthly boxes of food to 150 families! If you have not been to a distribution, we would highly recommend you attend one to see for yourself the impact we have on the community and how thankful the families are for our help. It is truly a heartwarming experience!
As we add the four new schools this year, we will be in need of more food donations. To assist with acquiring some of the most needed items, we are planning to request specific items each month to be collected at the general membership meeting. The following list includes specific requests for the upcoming months:
• “Spaghetti September” – Spaghetti Sauce, Pasta, Canned Spaghetti
• “Oatmeal October” – Boxed Oatmeal
Other most needed items for the pantry include: Whole Grain Cereal, Peanut Butter and 100% Fruit Juice.
These items can be dropped off at the League office during office hours. We also are thrilled to announce that the pantry for Feeding Our Future has been reorganized as part of the League’s relocation to Suite C of the Community Foundation Building on Oak Street. If you have not had a chance to see our new office space and food pantry, please stop by during office hours.

We are looking forward to the new school year and hope you will continue to support our efforts to assist so many families in our community. Kids in the Kitchen is excited to introduce “health and wellness” to the six schools sponsored by our Strengthening Families initiative. Volunteers will work with these children promoting nutrition, body image and physical fitness through both education and activities. Martita Martinez Cheesy Chicken Quesadilla

Ingredients:
1 Tolive oil
1 low fat whole wheat tortilla (8.5 inches)
1/4 cup low-fat cheddar cheese
3 oz. cooked all white chicken meat, shredded
3 Tmild salsa
1 T bacon bits
3 Treduced fat sour cream
Directions:
1. Spray frying pan with cooking spray and set over medium heat. Add tortilla.
2. Sprinkle cheese on tortilla.
3. Add chicken, salsa and bacon bits. After cheese has melted, fold in half and let outside get crispy.
4. Remove from pan and cut into quarters. Serve with sour cream on the side.
Spotlight onJulie Nicholson Julie Nicholson
Julie Nicholson is an active member within the League and believes it offers her another avenue to be involved and help improve her community while creating bonds with women she may have never met otherwise. The importance and value of helping others is a life lesson that was instilled in Julie as a young child; however, being involved in the League helps her keep this as a priority. She is dedicated to volunteering within her community through her placement in the League with Feeding Our Future/Strengthening Families.
Strengthening Families is focused on improving the lives of people within our community through programs that address health and well-being, as well as early childhood intervention and education, with an emphasis on fighting childhood obesity and the importance of proper nutrition. They are able to focus on these areas through two initiatives, Kids in the Kitchen and Feeding Our Future. Julie received the Shining Star award for the 2009-2010 year for her tremendous efforts and hard work with these programs.
Julie also serves her community in other areas. Over the past few years she has volunteered with the United Way of Hall County through her service on the finance committee and the Young Leader ’s Society Steering Committee. Julie currently serves as the Chair of the Serve Sub-Committee within the Young Leader ’s Society. For several years she has also been involved with the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce serving on the Ambassador Council. Through her work with Ambassadors, she earned a Silver Shovel Award for the 2009-2010 year. That same year, she graduated from the Leadership Hall County program. At this time, Julie is serving as an Associate Director for the Chamber.
Julie says one League member who has personally influenced her is Tiffany Gillespie. Tiffany is one of her dearest friends and she inspires Julie almost every day. She is one person Julie can always depend on when help is needed. There have been many instances that she has been desperate for volunteers to help with Feeding Our Future and although it is not her placement, Tiffany has always been there to help her. Her beautiful smile, huge heart and passion for helping others
We Have Moved!
The League Office has moved! We have relocated from our suite at the Community Foundation Building to the road-front Suite C. This will allow us to combine the League office and the Feeding Our Future food pantry. This also will allow us to expand the FOF program, plus hold committee and board meetings in our office. Combining the two should provide a cost savings to the League, plus allow greater visibility with a location that faces the road. The office is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m

Julie is married to her high school sweetheart, Tyler Nicholson. They have been married for eight years and have a beautiful daughter, Ava, who will be 4 in October, and two dogs, Gizmo & Baylee. Tyler is a Lieutenant with the City of Milton Fire Department, and Ava currently attends Pre-K at Primrose School of Gainesville. Julie says she has been fortunate to have the time and opportunity to get involved and share many of those opportunities with her husband and daughter. Although Ava is still young, they are already working to instill those same values in her Whether it be shopping for Secret Santa gifts at Christmas or working at the FOF Food Pantry to pack boxes, any opportunity to give back as a family is important. The Nicholsons also are members of Lakewood Baptist Church.

It is time to put your party hats on and get out your dancing shoes! Ladies, we are going to have a rocking good time at Preview Party this year! Please mark your calendars for Thursday, Sept. 29. You deserve a fun night out…and be sure to bring all your friends with you!
We will be having Preview Party at Wild Wing Café this year, beginning at 8:00 p.m. There will be good company, delicious food, tons of drink specials and music by Allen Nivens. Not to mention, we will be raising money for our wonderful cause –strengthening women and families!

All League Members are responsible for bringing a quota of $200 of “Thrift Sale Priced”merchandise to the Georgia Mountain Center. The drop off times for your quota are Sunday, Sept. 25 between 2 p.m.and 6 p.m.through Noon on Wednesday, Sept.28. All items must be priced according to the Price Sheet (available online) and need to be labeled with masking tape and the price written with a Sharpie.Each member is responsible for putting out her own quota.
Please bring a minimum of 20 bags and 4 boxes with your quota.
Please use the price sheet and a quota sheet that is on the website. Remember no books or stuffed animals and nothing that is priced lower than $0.25.
If you need to store any of your quota in the storage units you will be responsible for working an extra General Workshift or Sale Day shift. Any General Workshift changes or Sale Day requests must be submitted in writing to Melanie or Meredith by Sept.16.
We will continue again this year accepting ALL adult clothes for Thrift Sale except t-shirts,undergarments,bathing suits,shoes and socks. You are welcome to donate as much adult clothes as you wish, but you must donate $150 worth of quota that is NOT adult clothing.You will not be responsible for pricing the adult clothing you are donating.
Be “PRIZE GIRL”this year! Clean out your house and call family and friends to see if they have any donations.The largest amount of quota will win you the title of PRIZE GIRL and a JOHN WIND BRACELET! Remember, there is a new law in effect regarding the reselling of any recalled item (mainly children’s items) that could have a high level of lead. We need to pay special attention to the following items and make sure they are thrown away and not placed in the arena for resale:recalled children’s cribs and play yards;products that may contain lead such as children’s jewelry and painted wooden or metal toys;flimsily made toys that are easily breakable into small parts;toys that lack the required age warnings.The General Workshift Committees will be responsible for sorting these items, but we want everyone aware of the potential dangers of these items
