A Note from the President...

I know we have all dreamed of something. Either what we were going to be when we grew up, that perfect vacation or what we would do once we earned our first million! That is where our League is now. We are dreaming of how to make this community a more fulfilling place for all women.

The United Way of Hall County convened a group of women over a year ago to begin a discussion around the idea of a Women’s Initiative. ANeeds Assessment of our area has already been completed. This found that one of the top three needs of our local women is a sense of ‘community.’Through changes in a woman’s marital circumstances or from lack of education or transportation, women feel isolated and need a facility where they have the ability to educate, empower and equip themselves to create a change in their lives and community. Acenter similar to our dream is located in Charleston. Please go to their website at www.center4women.org to get an idea of this big idea.

The hope is that through services such as counseling and support groups, educational programs on a variety of relevant topics and events to gain financial support and provide networking opportunities, we will help women of all ages, race and backgrounds to build a better life for themselves. At our final membership meeting of the year, we will be asking for the support of this project for women and $15,000 seed money to help begin our dream for the women of our community. United Way will be asking for support from their board, as well, and seeking the same amount of seed money as we partner together on this dream. All actives and provisionals will need to attend the membership meeting to vote on this important project.

It is time to think big, take that leap of faith, and see where we land. It will be a giant step, but what a great opportunity to continue to fulfill our mission and vision, and continue that great League tradition of dreaming and succeeding. Money Matters

As a middle school teacher and cheerleading coach, I am around children for the large portion of day. That time, however, is spent in classrooms and I have a limited view of the students. If it does not occur in the school building, football stadium, or basketball gym, I do not get to see how the children react to different environments. This is the main reason why I choose to work at the YMCADay Camp at Enota Elementary. I wanted to be able to give back to the kids I work with on a daily basis, but in a different manner. The experience was more than I could have imagined. The kids act and react so differently when outside of the environment of school. The kids, from kindergarten and up, experienced activities that let their imagination soar. We made tie-dyed shirts and trained for the YMCA Olympics. The most rewarding events were the trips. One group went to the Spraygrounds at Laurel Park and others went to the Georgia Aquarium. The students’eyes lit up on these trips. For some, it was the first time to participate in these activities.

I cannot tell you how much this placement meant to me as a person and a teacher. Children deserve to get the most out of life and the YMCA helps that happen. I feel as if I was a little part of that experience because of my week long placement.

The first installment of your 20082009 dues is now payable. You may pay your dues by cash, check or credit card at the League office, or you may now pay your dues online using the League website. If you choose to pay by credit card, please note that we only accept Visa and MasterCard. A$10 late fee will be assigned for all dues not paid by May Dinner. Per League policy, members who have not paid the first dues installment by May 31st will be dropped from membership and a $25 reinstatement fee will apply. Thank you for paying your dues in a timely manner!

My favorite recipe is the“Rich Banana Bread”found on page 111. This recipe is easy and most everyone loves it even if they don’t like bananas!I have used this recipe on many occasions including baking to take as a gift!

My most favorite way to serve the“Rich Banana Bread”is alongside the“Chicken Salad Supreme” found on page 94.Brooke and I made this one year for our “Annual Father ’s Day Lunch”and it was truly a hit!

Everyone is invited to attend the May Dinner on Tuesday, May 6. The dinner is the first membership meeting of the 2008-2009 year. New officers and new members will be introduced. Our new sustainers (class of 2008) will also be recognized for their many contributions to our League during their active years of service. We would like to thank the sponsors of the Sustainer Cocktail Reception: GB&T and SteelCell of North America.

Don’t forget we will be presenting the first Idalu Slack award to a sustainer who exemplifies her continued commitment to the mission and vision of the League. We look forward to seeing you there!

We’ve Got the Spirit, Yes

Thank you to all the Junior League members who participated in the Junior League’s team in the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce’s Consumers Life Get Fit Stay Fit Corporate Challenge 5K on March 20. We had a great time together, got some great exercise and topped off the evening by WINNING the Team Spirit Award! Special thanks to Team Spirit Captain Lynn Carter for organizing our team tent (provided by Matt and Katie Dubnik; thank you!) and coordinating our awardwinning team spirit activities, complete with Spirit Sticks!

Our Junior League team was represented well by these Active and Sustaining members: Elisabeth Baldwin, Laney Brewer, DeAnna Browne, Jennifer Cagle, Lynn Carter, Caroline Cobb, Melanie Couch, Sabrina Cowart, Katie Dubnik, Pamela Dye, Cindy Dyer, Susan Gilley, Gerran Gilmer, Krista Havlik, Suzie Hawkins, Pyper Macloskie, McCree Simmons, Dixie Truelove, Melissa Tymchuk and these dedicated Junior League husbands: Larry Baldwin, Drew Havlik.

Junior League members were also among the winners of the event, including Active member Kara Scroggs and Sustainer Ginny Crumley, who won first place in their age categories. We are also very proud of Active member Robyn Lynch who organized the entire event for the Chamber!
