WELCOME Dear readers, welcome to Edition 8 of JLG InSight. As we approach the year’s end, I’d like to share some thoughts on what has been a very productive 12 months for JLG. Strong demand for our equipment continued in 2023, and collectively we worked hard to ensure we were in the best position possible to meet customer requirements, not only in terms of equipment supply, but in support of our machines through our suite of aftersales offerings. Our Ground Support program is a key differentiator between JLG and competitors, offering customers everything they need to ‘stay in the air’. Whether our customers operate a single machine or a large fleet, we know that unexpected downtime hurts. Preventative maintenance packages such as those offered under Ground Support, minimise any likelihood of down time. And in the unlikely event that a problem arises, strategically located service centres, fast accessibility to parts and our large team of experienced mobile service technicians means prompt solutions are reached. An important factor in ensuring consistently high service levels is infrastructure investment. Work is well advanced on our new Victorian branch in Hallam, Melbourne – it’s an expansive 7000m² site that’s more than double the size of the current facility, and once complete in the coming weeks, will provide JLG and our customers with many added benefits including a bigger workshop to undertake servicing and inspections, larger equipment stock holdings, diversification opportunities and improved access. You can read more about the new site on pages 20 and 21. On the product front 2023 has also been extremely active, with more electric and hybrid options being added to the model line-up along with self-levelling technologies. One machine that has drawn a lot of interest since being displayed at HIRE23 earlier in the year is the X13SJ Plus Compact Crawler Boom. Our first unit has recently entered the field with long time JLG customer IN2 Access Services in Melbourne; you can read more about their story in this edition of Insight. The great news is that the new product updates will continue next year with some exciting local and global product releases that will continue to position JLG as an industry innovator and segment leader. Along with product and infrastructure development, 2023 saw JLG continue to invest heavily in its people. You can have the best product in the market and the most functional and impressive facilities available, but without a passionate and knowledgeable team working hard in the background, achieving the very best outcomes for customers isn’t possible. To ensure that our human resources continue to be a point of difference, we provide team members with opportunities to further advance their skills and knowledge base through both internal and externally facilitated courses. Take up of these courses by our team members this year was strong, and we will continue to offer further education options in 2024 as well as apprenticeship opportunities for people looking for a start in the industry. Before signing off for this edition, on behalf of the JLG ANZ team, I’d like to thank all our customers and partners for their support this year – we’re grateful for your business and enjoy the close relationships we have with you. There will be a short shutdown period over the festive period from the 22nd of December to the 1st of January, with full resumption of services the following day. Have a safe and enjoyable break and we’ll see you in the new year.

JLG SUPPORT JEANS FOR GENES DAY JLG Industries has thrown its support behind ‘Jeans for Genes Day’, an annual even that’s held on the first Friday of August and raises funds for the Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI), to research serious medical conditions affecting kids, including genetic diseases, birth defects and cancer. CRMI launched Jeans for Genes Day in 1994 and in the years since funds raised have led to notable breakthroughs in treatments, highlighting the important contribution that community donations can make. While this fundraising initiative is for a serious cause, there’s also a fun element involved for participants, in that they’re encouraged to ditch their more formal work attire for the day, and instead wear jeans. Flares, acid wash, skinny leg, anything goes. To add a further element to the day, JLG also broke fashion protocols by holding a ‘double denim’ competition, that no doubt had older staff members rummaging through their wardrobes for any remnants of the 1980s. ‘Best dressed’ participants at each branch had their photos taken and submitted for judgement. Kathryn Cuddy from Regents Park took out the competition from QLD branch’s Damian Rossborough; the duo led a large field that would have had little trouble fitting in as extras in an old Bon Jovi music video.

8

JLG Human Resources Coordinator, Nadine Chapman, helped instigate the fundraising event and said that the interest from all branches was excellent. “Jeans for Genes Day is such a worthwhile cause and is also easy to organise, with the charity making it simple and accessible for companies that want to participate,” Nadine said. “Once you express an interest they provide flyers for use at branches that include QR codes for donations which are credited directly to JLG’s account – it’s all seamless. Staff could also donate cash via on site donation boxes in branches. “We wanted to add extra activities as part of the event so also encouraged branches to run their own programs. Several branches held lunches and barbecues for staff and customers to create further interest and awareness. And because it was easy and fun to participate, staff were really engaged and involvement was high.”

INTRODUCING MATT FARRINGTON

- NATIONAL OPERATIONS AND HSEQ MANAGER The access equipment sector tends to draw people in – and keep them – especially at JLG Industries where it’s not unusual for team members to clock-up decades of service; newly appointed National Operations and HSEQ Manager, Matt Farrington, is no exception. It was 2008 when Matt began with JLG as State Manager for South Australia and Northern Territory, but although fresh to the company, Matt was far from new to the industry, having already worked for several years with two high profile equipment suppliers and rental companies. For the next seven years, Matt gained a thorough grounding across many operational facets of the JLG business which ultimately led him to his next role in 2015 as National HSEQ Manager. With an extremely high safety focus, the position was quite different to his previous roles, but it was as National HSEQ Manager where he likely made his greatest impact with JLG to date. “I’d always had an interest in workplace health and safety so although that role was a learning experience, and a challenging one at that, it’s been extremely satisfying to see the focus on our company’s safety systems grow to the point that they’re industry leading,” Matt said. A key deliverable for Matt – particularly within the last two or so years of that role – was the development of JLG’s ‘Safety 365’ initiative. Safety 365 brings safety to the forefront in every work interaction, not only with JLG team members, but more broadly externally, including with customers, contractors, partners, and suppliers. “Safety 365 has certainly had an impact on the ANZ business with some recent milestones achieved highlighting the focus and dedication of our teams whilst having a continuous improvement focus to safety, a position all our team should be very proud of,” Matt said. In July this year, Matt was appointed National Operations and HSEQ Manager. 10

“This year I played my part temporarily covering at two branches while team members were away, so I reacquainted myself with the broader operational aspects of the business, and was actually thinking to myself, ‘hmm I don’t mind doing this’,” Matt said. There was then an opportunity presented for a more broadly expanded National role as the business transitioned. As National Operations Manager, Matt plays a broad function across the company, dealing directly with all JLG branches daily, while also assuming responsibility for JLG Ground Support. HSEQ continues to fall under his remit too, but now with the assistance of a broader team. Although relatively new to the position, Matt said he was enjoying the opportunities and the challenges that came with his new tenure. “No day is ever the same,” Matt says with a chuckle, “and this variety keeps things fresh and engaging.” “We have a couple of very exciting projects underway that will come to light next year. In the meantime, it’s all about supporting our customers and doing the best by them, not only by providing outstanding equipment, but by backing the metal with premium aftercare and support,” he said

When not at work, Matt likes to relax with family and friends. Most likely though, you’ll find him courtside at the basketball, where he’s kept busy coaching his son’s and daughter’s junior teams. He’s also a big fan of NFL, where he supports the Pittsburgh Steelers, who he was fortunate to see in action on a recent trip to the United States.

FIRST X13SJ PLUS COMPACT CRAWLER BOOM

GOES TO WORK WITH IN2 ACCESS SERVICES

Servicing a range of commercial and industrial clients across Victoria since 2006, IN2 Access Services is no stranger to JLG equipment, with around 750 machines currently in its hire fleet. The company’s most recent acquisition is an X13SJ Plus compact crawler boom, and it’s the first one to enter service in Australia. Although initially starting as an access equipment service, sales, transport and training business by owners Brad Hunter and Gary Vaughan, two years later, the company diversified when it began an equipment hire service and a third business partner, Sam Gumley, joined the team. JLG was one of the first brands that the trio invested in – the relationship has been strong ever since. The latest addition to IN2 Access Services’ hire fleet is JLG’s innovative new X13SJ Plus Compact Crawler Boom. The X13SJ Plus features a compact and lightweight design, coupled with a small footprint, making it ideal for a wide selection of applications both inside and out. Also aiding the machine’s versatility is its straight boom configuration with a working height of 12.9m, 6.4m working outreach and two-person 230kg unrestricted capacity. According to IN2 Access Services Director, Brad Hunter, it was the X13SJ Plus compact size that initially attracted him to the model. “I saw the machine at HIRE23 earlier in the year and immediately liked the specification – I thought it would fit in well within our fleet and offer extra options for our hire customers,” Brad explained. “Being lightweight and compact makes it ideal for smaller sites and for getting in and out of tight spaces, and being a new machine the X13SJ Plus features all the technologies we’d want and need in a machine.” Other benefits of the X13SJ Plus Compact Crawler Boom are its exceptional gradeability, and one-touch selflevelling outriggers that provide convenient operator set-up and envelope tracking operation. The machine is also equipped with a ‘go home’ and ‘go back’ functions 14

which allow the user to return the machine to the fully closed position at the touch of a button, and then return it to the last saved working position by pressing another. Two of the standout features of the new X13SJ PLUS is lithium battery power source coupled with the unit’s electric drive motors – the first in its class to offer such a combination from JLG. The potent 4.15 kWh – 48V Lithium battery which is matched to electric AC drive motors, optimises overall energy consumption leading to longer run times between charging as well as hi-torque operation. The machine also comes standard with the SkyGuard Skyline enhanced control panel protection. Brad said that IN2 Access Services cater to a range of industries and clients. “Along with the usual customers in commercial and industrial sectors including construction and civil industries, we also cater to film and television production teams, who will often use access equipment to set-up scenes or to help get the perfect shot,” he said. “The X13SJ PLUS wasn’t long on site before it went out on its first job. We think it’s going to be a very popular machine and we envisage adding more of them to our hire fleet in the near future.” IN2 Access’ JLG Account Manager, Daniel Reeve, said “we value the long-standing relationship we’ve had with IN2 Access, their company culture is well aligned with our own and the team at IN2 Access are extremely well versed on technical and product specifications, as well as market trends which sees them well planned and always a pleasure to do business with.”

Being lightweight and compact makes it ideal for smaller sites and for getting in and out of tight spaces.

3 CHALLENGES AND 3 BENEFITS OF TELEMATICS BY ARA ECKEL

Product Management, Connect Solutions at JLG Industries.

Telematics has become table stakes industrywide — today, everyone expects standard connectivity to all their lift and access equipment. In the early days of telematics, customers wanted to access all of the data from the machine. Then, there was a period of time when customers said they were getting too much data and requested less. Today, the pendulum has swung back in the other direction, and users are again wanting more data from the machine, asking for even more than ever before. To meet this demand, OEMs like JLG need to structure their telematics solutions in a way that is more efficient for customers to navigate, more meaningful in the way the system provides the data and more effective for them to use the data to proactively manage and maintain their fleets.

3 CHALLENGES

3 BENEFITS

There isn’t one industry over another that benefits more from using telematics. If the application requires the use of machinery that moves, it benefits from telematics.

Because telematics enables users to streamline access to important machine information quickly and effectively through digital channels, three benefits of using it on a job site are:

A trend that has re-emerged from this is customers asking again for deeper machine insights, three challenges face the access equipment industry today when it comes to data and telematics. They are:

1. Increased machine uptime and utilisation,

1. The actionability of data

Here’s a closer look at these benefits...

2. Confusion about what to do with telematics and how to manage it 3. The availability of connectivity on job sites Here’s a closer look at these challenges...

2. Boosted productivity and machine performance 3. Reduced downtime MORE UPTIME Telematics can show fleet managers where and how equipment is operating by providing high-level or finite details on several machine systems, including: •

Location to help with service planning and cuts on downtime for field techs

•

DTCs to address machine issues and get them back on rent quicker

•

Machine hours to help with billing and knowing when to service the machine

That means customers need a way to access the data through their telematics systems that enable them to manage the data and prioritize the information they most want to view, including equipment maintenance pages, maps that include machine location, geofences and reports on many other data points, including Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

•

Battery status

•

Machine utilisation

•

It also means that telematics systems need to be more effective to use. For example, it’s always been a challenge with certain functionality like geofences, which are great tools to have but are operationally difficult to develop and maintain.

Setting geofences/time fences to protect investment and to be notified on machine usage (leaving a particular area or being used before/after a designated time)

•

Schedule maintenance tasks

ACTIONABLE DATA Historically, customers have been overwhelmed by the amount of data available through telematics, so they asked to receive less – resulting in too little data being provided. Customers want more data, but they want it in a way that makes the data actionable and digestible.

Access to this type of information allows users to manage machine usage more efficiently and effectively.

CONFUSION

ENHANCED PRODUCTIVITY

The industry gives equipment owners and operators mixed messages about telematics, creating a lot of confusion about what users should do with telematics and how their businesses should manage it. On one side, OEM-specific solutions offer rich insights about a brand’s equipment, but sourcing telematics from multiple OEMs can be a lot of effort to manage. On the other side, investing in one 3rd-party telematics solution may be easier to manage but with fewer data points and equipment insights.

Many telematics solutions also have tools to analyse fleet and operator data, as well as determine the overall effectiveness of a machine in a particular situation. Sharing utilisation and operator data can significantly improve on-site efficiencies. And, by using telematics in conjunction with other digital tools, such as building information models (BIM), users can streamline the planning phase of projects to select the right machine for the job.

To be honest, trade-offs will always come with this decision because there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The right telematics solution will be the one that meets each business’s unique needs and goals. CONNECTED JOB SITES When considering how telematics can be — or will be — used on job sites, the decision isn’t all about weighing the pros and cons of a program’s specific benefit. It’s also about the logistics of working on a connected job site. A couple of questions users need to ask are: 1) Is there connectivity infrastructure available on site (i.e. cellular or WIFI service)? 2) If so, can work crews have connected devices on sites to access telematics information?

LESS DOWNTIME Telematics can also help to manage the servicing and maintenance of machines. For example, analysers to remotely diagnose machine issues and coordinate the tools and parts needed for on-site repairs. Telematics solutions can also provide users with the opportunity to receive automated reports and immediate notifications when issues arise. And, fleet managers can use telematics programs to proactively schedule maintenance, reducing unnecessary service calls. Telematics can also help equipment owners and users plan ahead for site visits and rental services, such as equipment deliveries. CLICK HERE TO READ THE FULL ARTICLE

BRANCH PROFILE

JLG INDUSTRIES VICTORIA JLG’s new Melbourne facility gives the Victorian team a fresh new site and room to grow. Anticipation is increasing in the lead-up to JLG’s imminent move to a new purpose-built 7000 m² facility at Centre Road, Hallam, in south-east Melbourne – it’s a relocation that will provide JLG’s Victorian team with two and a half times more under roof space than the current site. JLG Victorian Branch Manager, Roger Lancaster – who has been part of the JLG family for 15 years – saw the company begin to outgrow its current location, so is excited at the extra efficiencies and opportunities the Hallam site will bring. “As a company in recent years we’ve done extremely well to manage increased demand for the sales and support of JLG equipment among existing and new customers within our current Dandenong South site,” Roger said. “We’ve been able to continue delivering elevated service levels, but the new facility will allow us to do this more efficiently while meeting future growth demands. The workshop will be larger, there’s better accessibility and parking for customers and there’s a lot more room for trucks, which will make logistic movements much easier. “We’ll also be better equipped to hold a greater number of fast-moving spare parts and we’ll be better placed across all facets of our business really: sales, service, repairs and inspections.”

20

And along with meeting the needs of JLG customers today, the Hallam site provides scope for future growth on several fronts, according to Roger. “Yes, the new site will allow us to deliver our current range of services more effectively, but it also gives us options for the future. We will eventually install a paint booth and potentially could also facilitate manufacturing on the premises if required,” he said. To ensure continuity of service for customers in coming months, the Hallam facility which is expected to open in early November, will operate alongside the current Dandenong South branch for several months, with operations gradually transitioning to the new site. “We’re carefully planning and coordinating the move. Some refurbishment work can take up to four weeks, so scheduling is important to make sure the process is streamlined and downtime is minimised for our customers,” Roger said. “The team and I are looking forward to making the move to our new home and I think our customers, suppliers and partners will be happy with what the Hallam facility will have to offer.”
