WELCOME Dear clients and business partners, welcome to the latest edition of JLG Insight. As 2022 unfolds, we’re quite optimistic at JLG about what the year has in store. While it’s been a challenging two years for the industry, we’re now starting to see a gradual return to more stable operating conditions, as the supply chain squeeze slowly eases. Unfortunately though, a return to normality isn’t like flicking a light switch, it will take some time. While the supply chain issues have been largely out of our control, triggered by global manufacturing shutdowns or supply chain health and safety protocols, we’ve instead chosen to concentrate on those areas of our business that we can locally control. For JLG Industries across the ANZ region, that’s meant adding further value at a local level and consolidating our relationships with customers by strengthening the suite of aftersales offerings available under ‘Ground Support’. One initiative we recently unveiled as part of the broader Ground Support program is ‘Service Plus’ – it’s the smarter way for JLG equipment users and owners to maintain their machines, no matter what size fleet they have. Service Plus offers a choice of two maintenance plans, allowing operators to select the one that most closely meets their needs. A key benefit is that it provides a known, monthly fixed price for equipment servicing and maintenance, giving greater budgetary control and minimising the risk of any surprises at the time of servicing. A regular service plan such as those offered under Service Plus, also provides long term savings and minimises the risk of downtime by pre-empting any possible issues with the equipment. And finally, Service Plus ensures all machines are regularly checked and comply with Australian and New Zealand Standards and job site requirements, ensuring the safety of operators and other people on site. The last two years have also seen our company heavily invest in our Port Macquarie facility – you can read more about the instalment of a solar power system at the site on page 22, but further to this we’re also finalising the expansion of our manufacturing infrastructure at the facility to increase its R&D and volume capabilities. In other exciting news, our extensive new product roll-out will continue in the months ahead, building on our recent launch of RT and ERT Series Scissor Lifts. The new models will include several boom lifts as well as the market leading DaVinci All-Electric Series Scissor Lift. Several new product initiatives will also be unveiled from our Port Macquarie facility later this year, and we look forward to bringing you further details of these in a future edition of Insight. Finally, just a quick reminder that the team at JLG Industries will be exhibiting at this year’s Hire and Rental Industry Association Convention beginning on May 25 in Adelaide. If you are attending, be sure to visit our stand and say hello. Please enjoy this edition and all the best for the year ahead.

TWENTY YEARS OF HOME-GROWN LIGHTING TOWERS This year JLG celebrates 20 years of manufacturing its lighting tower range in Australia. It’s a notable achievement that proves that when you get the fundamentals right, success will follow. In the case of JLG Lighting Towers, the combination of a fit-for-purpose design, strong product benefits coupled with premium support offerings, has seen production volumes grow from 101 units in 2002, to an expected 500 plus units for this calendar year. All up, total production over the past two decades is fastapproaching 6,500 units. Interestingly though, the initial idea behind the first model was to help diversify the capabilities of the Port Macquarie facility and spread business risk, helping to level out the peaks and troughs of daily operations and market conditions.

Initially beginning production with a single model, the JLG Lighting Tower range now comprises five options, with additional variants in development. JLG Industries Port Macquarie Operations Manager, Jarrad Smith, said that the spread of models helped provide JLG clients with choice, while giving them multiple options to best suit their application. “In much the same way as the development of our initial 6308AN model Lighting Tower was influenced by customer input, so have subsequent models,” Jarrad said.

By way of a brief explanation, the site had been heavily involved in undertaking inspections and rebuilds of elevating work platforms – under AS 2550.10, these machines require major inspections at 10 years of service. JLG management at the time realised that with an industry-wide sales slumps in the early 90s, come 2002 maintenance work would be hard to come by. And so the idea to locally-produce lighting towers was born, to ensure business continuity through diversification.

“The broader product line-up is the result of our close relationship with the market. Having a wide footprint in both Australia and New Zealand, we can access valuable voice of customer feedback from across a range of industries and geographic locations.

Given that JLG Industries had never manufactured lighting towers previously in any markets, it provided the company with the opportunity to begin with a clean slate, allowing it to engage with its broader client base, to develop something special that would meet their exact requirements.

While at a distance the current JLG Lighting Tower range may look similar to its predecessors, the latest machines have evolved and advanced considerably over time.

Taking a ground zero approach also allowed JLG to apply the design and manufacturing principles, and borrow technology from its other market-leading product categories to design a better overall product – evidence of this can be seen in product benefits such as articulated masts, a favourite of the mining industry.

“Users of our equipment like the fact that our lighting towers are developed specifically for use in Australia and New Zealand, and that there are no compromises in the design, fit or finish,” he said.

Changes have included a transition from H.I.D to L.E.D lighting resulting in higher quality light output. This change has also virtually eliminated light maintenance (L.E.Ds are much longer lasting compared to globes) while also running cooler and consuming less power. The lighting towers’ power source has also evolved to provide low noise performance, with reduced fuel consumption while meeting cleaner Tier 4F emission performance that customers are increasingly 5

JLG sees a strong future for its locally manufactured Lighting Towers range, with customer feedback on these products being extremely positive.

requesting. Alternative energy sources are also under evaluation for future models. Other enhancements include a transition from an AC to extra low voltage DC systems, which allows the equipment to be repaired by a service technician rather than a qualified electrician. JLG’s engineering and design team has also manufactured the range to feature a compact transport footprint, allowing more units to be loaded onto trucks, making delivery to remote areas such as mine sites more efficient and cost effective. Product improvements are not the only advancements that have been made at Port Macquarie – the manufacturing process has also evolved, according to Jarrad. “We definitely apply a lot more process planning and line balancing now than in the early days – the production team works to Lean manufacturing principles and undergoes regular training,” Jarrad said. “We’re also fortunate to have the backing of JLG global and parent company Oshkosh Corporation, which have very robust manufacturing systems in place.”

6

JLG sees a strong future for its locally manufactured Lighting Towers range, with customer feedback on these products being extremely positive. The company’s Australian-made Lighting Tower success has also led to other manufacturing projects on site, namely the TSL-2000 scissor lift trailer and some other exciting products coming to the market very soon. “Customer feedback on the Lighting Towers has been outstanding. Our customers appreciate the reliability, longevity, performance, and the fact that they’re 100 per cent designed and manufactured for Australian and New Zealand markets,” Jarrad said. “Given that JLG is primarily a manufacturer of access equipment, our focus on designing and building the most reliable products possible is another key difference of our range, and once lighting towers are out in the field, our support is also second to none.”

BRANCH PROFILE

JLG INDUSTRIES NEW ZEALAND When it comes to access equipment, JLG Industries’ Auckland branch provides New Zealand customers with everything they need. Based in the suburb of Mt Wellington, this large and modern facility features a selection of display equipment for sale including boom lifts, scissor lifts, vertical lifts, compact crawler booms and low-level access machines. The site is also home to a large workshop that undertakes predelivery checks servicing, repairs, inspections and major rebuilds. Additionally, the facility features integrated warehousing that’s capable of dispatching spare parts around the country at short notice, or making them available for local pick-up. There’s a team of 10 JLG staff based at the site including three mobile service technicians; a further four mobile service technicians are based across other parts of the country (Wellington, Christchurch and Central Otago), providing the convenience of job site servicing and breakdown assistance if required. JLG Industries (NZ) Branch Manager, Cameron Neilson, said the New Zealand branch was well credentialled to support local customers, with prompt, efficient and professional service. “We’re extremely fortunate at JLG New Zealand to boast a dedicated and experienced local team, some of whom have been with the company for many years,” Cameron said.

“Combine this with the functional capabilities that the Auckland branch provides, and it positions us extremely well to meet the needs of our customers.” Despite JLG’s high standing and popularity in New Zealand, Cameron said that the company was introducing more initiatives to ensure that it continues to lead the market in all areas. “There’s a major focus at the moment on investing in our staff. Among the programs are a range of industryrelated training and qualification activities – the better educated our team is, the more credentialled they’ll be to meet the needs of our customers,” he said. “We’re also increasing our focus on what our customers need to run their equipment and machines more efficiently, this includes having more parts in stock and available. Another recent change is an expansion of our operating hours, as well as upgrades to our Online Express parts portal, making it more convenient for customers to get what they need.” Visitors to the Auckland branch in the coming months will also notice several layout changes – these have been designed to increase the workshop footprint and to free-up floorspace to establish a dedicated display area for new equipment sales, with the view of providing customers with a more professional purchase experience. “Our site needs to be in keeping with the professional image that JLG holds in the market,” Cameron said. “The Auckland branch is already one of the best in the industry in terms of size, fit out, capabilities, dedicated resources and the high emphasis we place on having everything organised and well presented. We look forward to making additional adjustments this year to lift the benchmark even more.”

JLG SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGER GETS DOWN TO BUSINESS DURING TORRID TIMES When JLG Supply Chain Manager, Rebecca White, took on her new role with JLG over 18 months ago, little did she know of the challenges she’d be facing in the months ahead – some of which continue today. “Most of our equipment and spare parts are sourced from the United States, and we’re now seeing the delayed effect of the manufacturing closures that were put in place there to deal with COVID,” Rebecca said. “Our customers have been understanding, they know that supply chains have been squeezed across all sectors and that lead times have grown. We’re looking at alternative suppliers where viable and are also providing alternative freight options for selected parts – unfortunately though, in the case of new suppliers, these take time to quality test and set-up, while some freight options are still not operating at pre pandemic levels.” The painful logistics situation is unlike anything Rebecca had seen before in her 20 plus years working in supply chain roles, including manufacturing for some of the country’s FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) giants. As well as navigating the challenges of an impacted supply chain, Rebecca was also on a steep learning curve, to educate herself about the Access equipment industry, which was totally new to her. While capital equipment and FMCG may be poles apart, she recognised key similarities and identified certain processes that were widely used in FMCG which could lead to efficiencies at JLG. So, under the cloud of COVID, one of her early major projects was to oversee a detailed review and audit of JLG’s Australian and New Zealand parts operations, which identified a number of opportunities to better allocate parts holdings and to streamline parts deliveries. 12

“Having previously worked in retail, everything was metric-aligned, there were systems in place, everything was forecasted, mapped and measured – I wanted to bring these processes to JLG, to provide us with greater accountability of stock, which would ultimately benefit parts supply to customers,” Rebecca said. “An area we have been working on over the past 6-12 months is to better support new products, to ensure we have the right parts in stock for new models, and options/accessories available to add value to existing and new equipment. “Similarly, we are now working on key projects to support Service, working on forecasting parts needed to properly cater for our major machine inspections and routine services.” As well as enjoying the day-to-day challenges of the role, and the rewards that come with solving problems and seizing opportunities, Rebecca said that another significant reason she liked being at JLG was the company’s great culture. “The people here are what sets JLG apart, they’re really genuine and supportive of one another – the company as a whole is very open and welcoming,” she said. When not at work, Rebecca is kept equally busy playing mum to 9 and 12-year-old children who love anything to do with water and bringing out their mum’s silly side. Any further downtime is spent between the pages of a good book or enjoying live music with friends.

Many returned soldiers were not getting the help they needed. They deserved something better after serving their country. Young Diggers was formed in 2010 with most of its members (Diggers) from the 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6RAR). They had recently returned to Brisbane after serving in the Mentoring Task Force in Afghanistan. These had been some of the most difficult years in Australia’s longest conflict.

They receive Assistance Dog jackets and IDs when they pass their L/ jacket assessment. Then they can progress to a PAT (Public Access Test) accreditation which can take up to 2 years. Young Diggers is run by Volunteers and every $1 donation goes to providing ongoing support to the handler and their dog.

The Training Program established by (Young Diggers) helps provide suitable Dogs at NO SET UP COST to the member.

Members of the public or organisations can also help by sponsoring a dog for $2.500 to help cover ongoing costs.

Veterans of the Australian Defence Force, and later First Responders (Police, Fire and Ambulance), diagnosed with PTSD and associated mental health issues could gain access to this wonderful therapy.

Our Sponsorship Secretary will keep sponsors updated via email and photo’s as to how the dog is progressing.

The program has had much success in training members to train their own dogs and providing rescue

We are an organisation that does not stigmatise, pass judgement, or devalue those living with and suffering from various mental illness inflicted during service to Australia.

JLG Industries was unaware of Young Diggers until a representative of the charity contacted JLG last year looking for corporate support, according to JLG Industries Marketing and Product Manager (Australia & New Zealand), Arron Cooper. “There are many worthwhile charities throughout Australia and New Zealand, some are more prominent than others,” Arron said. “We were not aware of Young Diggers, but after we spoke to the charity and learned more about the excellent work they were doing to help returned servicemen and women, we agreed that we should assist, and also help elevate the organisation’s profile through an article in JLG Insight.” As well as providing Young Diggers with some publicity, JLG Industries signed up as one of the sponsors of the 2022 calendar along with its annual magazine. With the end of financial year not too far off, now is the ideal time to make a tax deductible donation, or to get involved in some other manner. Learn more at: youngdiggers.com.au 15

TRAINING

JLG RAMPS UP TRAINING PROGRAMS Training is an important component of JLG’s ‘Ground Support’ initiative, our company’s comprehensive, market-leading aftersales support program. For JLG clients and employees, having access to quality training is vital. In the case of customers, it ensures they have a thorough understanding of the functionality of their equipment which will allow them to operate it safely and efficiently, as well as to maintain it correctly. And for JLG team members, they receive thorough instruction on a range of topics, from learning how to specify machines that best suit the application, through to general product training, servicing procedures and much more. JLG delivers its training programs either via an online platform through ‘JLG University’, or in person at a JLG branch or customer workplace – it’s this delivery flexibility that has contributed to high training participation rates among both JLG customers and employees, according to JLG Industries National Training Manager, Graeme Park. “One of the things that sets JLG’s training apart from competitors is our ability to closely cater to the requirements of our participants,” he said. “There is an ever-growing range of online modules available via JLG University and we also do a lot of face-to-face training, where we can deliver set programs or customise a syllabus specifically to suit our clients or internal attendees.”

JLG University Launched in 2012, JLG University is an online technical training centre that provides the convenience of 24/7 access, and allows participants to complete modules at their own pace and to suit their work and family schedules. There are also instructor-

led online learning options available through the platform, where an instructor facilitates the course electronically. Graeme said that the modules accessible through JLG University were ideal for newcomers to the access equipment industry or for those seeking to refresh their knowledge. “A wide range of JLG equipment is covered in the modules, and given the rate at which JLG is introducing new models, it’s a fantastic way to stay up-to-speed on the new releases,” he said.

Face to face training Of course, for some types of training a physical presence is preferable, and this sees Graeme regularly travel to JLG branches and facilities across Australia and New Zealand, as well as to customer sites to administer training. He is also supported by two training team members, Neil Castlehow in Perth and Ash Arachchilage who is based in Melbourne. “An in-person approach is really needed particularly for the bespoke programs we develop for customers,” he said. “Now that the COVID travel restrictions have lifted, we’re enjoying getting out and delivering these programs face-to-face. During COVID we pivoted and made use of the latest tablets and other technologies to deliver training, but there’s no substitute to being on site and doing proper walk arounds. “The coming months look extremely busy for the training department. What we offer is very well received by customers and this is driving demand. “When I began with JLG around nine years ago, there were far fewer machines, now we have formal training for 25 JLG models.” 17

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

KEEP ON GIVING BACK Following the success of previous events, JLG Industries has again held its ‘Good to Give Back’ program, a joint global charitable effort between JLG Industries and sister brand, Jerr-Dan. The broad focus of ‘Good to Give Back’ is to provide community support within the regions that JLG operates, and where staff members and customers live, work and play, promoting positive engagement between the broader JLG team and the community. As well as helping vulnerable members of society, the initiative provides an outlet for JLG employees to engage outside of the workplace for a common cause, while also giving them the opportunity to use their unique talents in other meaningful ways to make a real impact. This year’s program was held earlier in April and included a series of activities across New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia, Victoria, Queensland and in Auckland, New Zealand. In Port Macquarie, the home of JLG’s technical hub and manufacturing facility, a team lunch was held and included presentations covering men’s mental health and wellbeing. The team was also involved with the Port Anglican Soup Kitchen, donating food and participating in the organisation’s BBQ lunch service. Still in New South Wales, in Sydney, JLG partnered with

18

street outreach service, the Shining Stars Foundation, to cook and serve a dinner service for the less fortunate throughout the Liverpool region. In Queensland, JLG again teamed-up with the Brisbane Motorcycle Street Feed, a program that sees the motorcycle group travel around Brisbane setting up meals for the homeless while also distributing hygiene products. JLG team members also participated in ‘Cooking for a Cause’, an event where OzHarvest chefs teach zero-waste cooking skills while transforming rescued ingredients into gourmet meals to support vulnerable communities. While in New Zealand, JLG threw its support behind Auckland City Mission, through the sorting and distribution of clothing for their charity stores. All initiatives were embraced and strongly supported by JLG employees, and well received by charitable partners and communities.

A word from the team PORT MACQUARIE, NSW

PERTH, WA

Helping to cook up a feast at the Port Anglican Soup Kitchen event in Port Macquarie was JLG employee Bechir Taslida, who provided his thoughts in the Good to Give Back initiative.

In Perth, Western Australia, JLG Office Administrator, Dana Shaw participated in OzHarvest’s ‘Cooking for a Cause’, a program she found to be extremely fulfilling.

“It always surprises me that in a country like Australia there are people who are homeless, but I have learnt that there are many factors for this, particularly in recent times,” Bechir said. “For example, the costs of home rentals are high and there is a lack of available properties; mental health can also be an issue as well as alcohol, drug and gambling addiction. “I personally found it rewarding to be involved in Good to Give Back, not only to feed someone who needs it, but to sit down and share a meal with someone less fortunate than myself and simply talk with them.”

“I chose to participate in this initiative as I’ve always wanted to help the community over here ever since seeing the issue of homelessness in the city when I was out one evening,” Dana said. “So when the opportunity presented I thought there was no better way to ‘Give Back’ than preparing food – especially recycled food – for those in need. “The morning with OzHarvest was so amazing and very informative in regard to food wastage – it really did make you realise how much of a throwaway society we have become. It was inspirational to see what can be prepared and the quality of meals created from food that would otherwise be wasted. “It was a humbling experience and I highly recommend it to anyone if the opportunity arises – I will definitely be putting my hand up again.”

HARNESSES THE SUN IN COMPANY-FIRST

In keeping with a growing focus on sustainability and minimising its environmental impact, JLG’s Australian manufacturing facility in Port Macquarie has recently made the switch to solar power. The site became the first Oshkosh Corporation facility in the world to install a solar photovoltaic (PV) system, and will likely be the first of many others given the CO2 savings being achieved, coupled with a significant reduction in electricity costs. Installation of the 100kW solar PV system was completed in September 2021 and involved fitment of 222 panels to cover most of the roof of the main building plus associated wiring. The system’s electricity generation covers approximately 80 percent of what the site uses. JLG Technical Service Manager, Luke Schubert, said the adoption of solar power at the Port Macquarie manufacturing facility was positive on many fronts. “Given that almost all of our energy consumption occurs through the day, we’re directly benefitting from the solar system through our peak work times,” he said.

Given that almost all of our energy consumption occurs through the day, we’re directly benefitting from the solar system through our peak work times.

“This means we only need to draw on the grid for limited periods, and under some conditions we generate more power than we need, so this surplus is returned to the grid. On average we’re generating over 85 megawatt hours per month of electricity and at the same time saving 34kg of CO2 per day.” To ensure the best performance from the system, the manufacturing facility also features L.E.D lighting throughout, which provides a lower current draw. A further benefit of the solar system installation that can sometimes be overlooked, is the positive insulation affect the PV solar panels have. Studies have shown that panels can lower roof surface temperatures by up to 38 percent, this translates to a temperature reduction of up to 3˚C inside, leading to a more comfortable working environment.
