Spring is here! It’s music to my ears. Flowers are blooming, the birds are heading back north and summer is just around the corner. As with the coming of spring, the Junior League of Charleston is fully immersed in preparations for the 10th annual Building Communities Over Cocktails (BCOC) fundraising event!

BCOC will be held on May 2 at the historic Daniel Boone Hotel on Capitol Street. There are many fresh and exciting new items to share about this year’s event. With the assistance of active member, Lindsey Rotella, the logo was refreshed, which you can view on page 2 of this newsletter. Additionally, we have added “early shopper” access tickets, allowing admission into the event thirty minutes earlier – helping to ensure you don’t miss out on the vendors, silent auction items and delicious food. The entire league, especially BCOC Co-Chairs, Elizabeth Yeager and Lindsey Silbernagel, look forward to seeing you at the event and sharing stories of the league, friendship and community!
In February, Sustainer Connie Hamrick graciously received all of the league’s archives into her home. Several sustainers have been going through pictures, newspaper articles and memorabilia of the past 90 years. It is our hope to display these cherished items at the Junior League of Charleston’s 90th Anniversary Celebration event in October. Save the date – the 90th Anniversary Celebration is set for October 26 at the Walker Theater at the Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences. The Sustainer Committee and active Membership Council are working hard to make this event spectacular. Please keep your eyes open for more details in the coming months! Get your your tickets! tickets! Building Community Over Cocktails Thursday, May 2 The Junior League of Charleston will host its 10th annual Building Community Over Cocktails (BCOC) fundraising event on Thursday, May 2, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Historic Daniel Boone Hotel, 405 Capital Street, Charleston, West Virginia 25301. JLC’s 10th annual BCOC celebration will be a funfilled evening with hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and boutique-style shopping (e.g., jewelry, accessories, home goods, handbags, etc.). The evening also provides a great opportunity to get to know JLC members and the local non-profit organizations that JLC partners with. Regular admission tickets are $25 or for $30 you can get ‘early shopper access’ and arrive at 5:30 p.m. All proceeds from the BCOC event enable JLC to support its community volunteer programs and operating budget. Event tickets may be purchased by contacting any JLC member or by leaving a message at the League office by calling (304) 346-5856 or emailing jlchas@frontier.com. 90th Anniversary Celebration – October 26 The Junior League of Charleston will celebrate its 90th Anniversary on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Walker Theater at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences. Formal invitations for League members and sustainers will follow. To prepare, we need your help! Tiffany Smith, JLC Secretary, is compiling pictures and biographical information from all active and sustainer members to include in the JLC Directory. Historian, Melissa Stricker, along with Alice Abernathy, Sustainer Advisor, and Connie Hamrick, Sustainer, are compiling pictures for the directory, and a slideshow that will be showcased during the anniversary celebration. If you have any pictures you would like to share, please e-mail or mail them to the JLC office. Also, a special thanks to Connie for storing the archives at her home.
Signature Project Update In February, League members conducted a run through of the new program Junior League on the Move. Five children attended the practice event and provided much needed feedback on the program! There were a few hiccups along the way, but that was what we were looking for. Everyone agreed that their favorite part of the program was learning how to make a healthy snack, using strawberries, grapes and bananas. Since the run through, we have been able to revamp the program and make it more appealing to a wider range of children. We are now looking for partners in the community who would like to have Junior League come in and work with kids ages 7-12. Junior League of Charleston Events Impact Days JLC members prepared dinner for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Kanawha City. We have done a total of three dinners at Ronald McDonald house and will have a fourth in April. To date, we have served dinner to nearly 40 families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. We have focused on keeping our meals in line with our new healthy eating initiative and served (relatively) healthy meals!
Mark your calendar - Upcoming Impact Day! We will be having a team walk for at the March of Dimes to raise money and awareness for premature babies. The walk is on April 27th on the Boulevard and is open to any Junior League member or their family. Feel free to log on to the March of Dimes website and join our team!

Cook Books for Sale! Both of our Mountain Measures cookbooks are available at Charleston’s Capitol Market at the WV Marketplace store. In addition, the cookbooks are a top-ten seller at Tamarack in Beckley, WV. We have a variety of swaps with other Junior Leagues that can be purchased for $18. Anyone interested in purchasing cookbooks can do so through our website at www.jlcharlestonwv.org, by contacting any JLC member, or by email or phone.

Thank you to Casto Technical Services! The Junior League of Charleston would like to give our thanks to Casto Technical Services for donating extra storage space for our Mountain Measures cook books. Casto Technical Services is a commercial HVAC company located at 540 Leon Sullivan Way (across from the Capital Market). We have 1,800 cook books left to sell, so the extra space is incredibly helpful!

Our condolences condolences Recently, we learned that sustainers, Catherine Gates and Martha Stathers, have passed away. Both Mrs. Gates and Mrs. Stathers were active sustainers. As is customary, a donation will be made in their names to the Rebecca Dickinson Goldsmith Fund. Our condolences go out to their family and friends.
