Renga About the Score For the pianist, boxes with the words “Inside the Piano” indicate that the player should perform the bracketed notes with the notated articulations. A “ + ” symbol indicates that the pianist should slightly dampen the string with the tip of their finger before playing the indicated pitch. Ideally the player should dampen the string at the node where the string and frame separate – as close to the tuning rods as allowed. Measure ninety-seven indicates that the piano should sustain the chords from measure ninety-six for a duration of six seconds before the cello enters at measure ninety-eight. Though measure 108 specifies a tempo with pulse, performers should interpret it as a general indication for pacing of the ending – in that it should not be too drawn-out.
Performance Notes Granted, it is understood that due to differences in piano construction, pitches specified in the score may not be available to the performer. In this instance, the performer should either substitute notated pitches with those most closely available or most closely preferred. In addition, it advisable that the pianist push the music stand further into the piano to allow access to strings for dampening. Alternatively, performers may elect to stand if necessary. Also, it may be helpful to use masking tape to mark individual strings to help facilitate ease of performance.
