Editorial Comments... Jill Bayers Hotchkiss Seems like we went from balmy temps into December to the Artic plunge in mid-January. As I write this the actual temperaJill Hotchkiss ture is -34 F with the wind chill somewhere around -60. God bless everyone trying to take care of livestock in this kind of weather! The Cattlemen’s Congress National Hereford Shows in Oklahoma City and National Western Stock Show Hereford Show in Denver were ones for the books. Virtually back-toback in early to mid-January, the two events showcased Hereford cattle to the max with impressive lineups throughout. This year seemed to really showcase a number of young people who participated in the open show arenas as well as the Junior Shows. These national Hereford shows will be followed by the Fort Worth Stock Show at the end of January. Kyle Colyer, Bruneau, ID, judged the Cattlemen’s Congress National Hereford Bull Show along with his son Cruz. How wonderful for young Cruz to be included in this process with his dad. The bull show had 58 bulls while the female show had 220 head. As Kyle was about to select the bull champions at Cattlemen’s Congress, he said, “We have the best breed show in the bull division and the bull classes of any national show and it’s a compliment to the breeders.” Kyle also paid an emotional tribute to Jerald Callahan. Callahan, who was an industry leader, pro(continued on page 6)

Obituaries Clarence Edward Caraway
Clarence Edward Caraway, was born May 17, 1944 in Cedar Rapids, IA to George John Caraway and Harriett Winifred (Platner) Caraway. He attended grade school at Marion Rural Independent, one year of high school at Alburnett, IA and graduated from Linn Mar High School in Marion, IA in 1962. He was active in 4-H and FFA and developed his love for fitting and showing cattle. He worked at Colonial Bakery in Cedar Rapids, IA while helping his dad on the farm. He moved to Redfield,
SD and worked for Walter Schultz and continued his love of Hereford cattle. In 1966, he came to Minnesota and was hired at Delaney Herefords as a herdsman where he showed cattle all over the upper Midwest. On June 8, 1968, he married Mary Elizabeth Delaney. Through this union they were blessed with six children. As a family they continued raising and showing Hereford cattle. Clarence developed a reputation for breeding elite quality Hereford cattle that were competitive at the national level. He was a mentor for many future generation cattle producers and was respected by his peers. He has served on many boards: Minnesota Beef Council, Minnesota Grazing Association, LyonLincoln Electric, Minnesota Hereford Association, Minnesota Red Angus Association and Lincoln County CoOp Oil, church cemetery board, and church council. In 2013, Clarence was inducted into the Minnesota Hereford Breeders Hall
of Fame. In 1995, Clarence was looking for a new challenge in the cattle business. He purchased his first Red Angus cattle and quickly became respected by his peers in an additional breed. In addition to cattle, Clarence enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. He took great pride in attending his children and grandchildren’s events. He enjoyed using his creativity to fabricate anything to make life easier and more efficient. He was very proud that he passed these skills, talents, and passions onto his children and grandchildren. Clarence was admitted to the Avera Tyler Hospital and passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Mary of 55 years and his six children: Barb (friend Carey) of Baltic, SD; James of San Antonio, TX; Lori (Fiancé Cory) of Brookings, SD; Mary Kay of Ivanhoe, MN; Corey (Alethea) of Volga,

Gayla Renee Berens
Gayla Renee Berens, born on January 20, 1954, in Quinter, KS, peacefully returned to the embrace of our Heavenly Father on December 27, 2023 after spending Christmas surrounded by her family. Gayla’s life was a testament to her faith and devotion to God. Through her actions, she demonstrated a deep love and care for her family and neighbors, always placing their needs before her own. Gayla’s selflessness and compassionate nature inspired all who had the privilege of knowing her. In the face of adversity, Gayla remained steadfast, displaying resilience, perseverance, and an unyielding trust in God’s plan. Her determination and unshakeable faith were a shining example of what it means to walk with grace and strength. Gayla leaves behind her husband, Wayne, and her father, William. Gayla’s memory will forever be cherished by her four children, Allison (Josh), Ryan (Melissa), Craig (Karyn), and Sarah (Darren), as well as her treasured grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother, Leona. In her moments of solitude, Gayla found solace and joy in the art of quilting and sewing. These creative endeavors allowed her to express her gratitude for the beauty of God’s creations and to share her talents with those she loved. (continued on page 12)

Janet M. Kolousek
Janet M. Kolousek, age 71, of rural Wessington Springs, passed away on Sunday, December 24, 2023 at her home. Marie Kolousek was born on February 14, 1952 in Winner, SD to parents Alfred and Goldie (Best) Carter. Janet grew up in rural Witten until her family moved to Winner her senior year of high school. She was attending South Dakota State University
Bischoff’s
in Brookings when she met her future husband, Richard Kolousek. They were married March 3, 1973 and lived in Winner until they moved to the Farm in Wessington Springs in 1976. Janet got her medical records degree and started her career at the Winner Hospital. After they moved to Wessington Springs, she continued to work in Winner for a couple years. She then worked in Medical Records at Weskota Memorial Medical Center until 1985. After the hospital, Janet worked for Jerauld County Clinic, now Horizon Health Care, for over 35 years in multiple positions including Office Manager. Janet was still working part time until her death. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she was the church pianist for many years. She was also a member of St. Joseph’s Altar Society, and active in community service including the Avera Weskota Manor Board, Education Director for Farmer’s Union in Jerauld County and Crow Lake Cemetery Association. She was a Stampin’ Up Demonstrator and at home she could always be found in her stamp room, making her beautiful cards. She loved supporting her grandchildren in their events and was proud of all her grandchildren and children. She is survived by her husband Dick, children Scott (Amber) Kolousek, Laura Kolousek, and Leah (Jared) Rich(continued on page 14)

Jarold Eldon Callahan
Jarold Eldon Callahan of Edmond, OK passed away on December 23, 2023. Jarold was born on September 17, 1954, to Joe and Maxine (Spurgeon) Callahan, who instilled in him commitment to family, work ethic, and integrity. He grew up on a diversified family farm and cattle operation northwest of Welch, OK. As a youth, his passion for farming and ranching was evident as he was driving a tractor as soon as (or maybe before) his father would let him. He attended Welch High School, where he excelled at academics, livestock judging and basketball (although he probably wouldn’t have ranked it in that order). He continued his livestock judging career at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M where he received his associate’s degree in 1974. He later went on to receive a B.S. degree in Animal Science from Oklahoma State University where he was a member of the 1975 OSU Livestock Judging team and graduated as one of the Top Ten Seniors in the College of Agriculture in 1976. later received his Master’s Degree in Agriculture (Animal Science) from the University of Arkansas. Jarold coached the Livestock Judging team at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M from 1976 to 1982, where he also served as Chair of the Agriculture Division. Jarold served as an instructor and coached the Livestock Judging team at Oklahoma State University from 1982 to 1991, where he was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1990. He impacted the lives of many students through his coaching in his time at both institutions and he later served on The Oklahoma A&M Board of Regents. During his tenure at NEO and OSU he was blessed to coach, advise and mentor many talented young students and build life-long relationships as those students became friends, and colleagues. Jarold served as the Executive Vice President of the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) from 1991 to 1995. A life-long learner, Jarold’s time at the OCA found him exploring new roles as an advocate for the beef cattle industry. He became President of Express Ranches, one of the largest purebred cattle operations in the world, from 1996 to 2023. Bob Funk and Express Ranches gave Jarold the opportunity to innovate and help shape the future of the purebred beef cattle industry. He was truly thankful to be a part of such a talented, loyal, and dedicated team. Jarold’s many accomplishments and contributions were most recently recognized by being selected as the 2023 inductee to the Saddle & Sirloin Portrait Gallery. Jarold dedicated his whole life to being a loyal, hard-working, and generous person who prioritized his family, friends, education, and beef cattle improvement. He loved Oklahoma, OSU, cattle, his wife and partner Jennifer, and his family. Of all of Jarold’s accomplishments, he was most proud of his children Brian, Tracie, and Ryan. He was preceded in death by his father, Joe E. Callahan in 2015, and his grandparents. The surviving family includes, his wife Jennifer Callahan of the home, his mother, Maxine Callahan of Welch, his children, Brian Callahan and wife Angie of Dallas, TX, Tracie Poage and husband Lenny of Yukon, OK, Ryan Callahan and girlfriend, Taylor Gazda of Edmond, his brother Tommy Callahan and wife Sherri of Welch, sisters, Linda Hogan and husband Leon of Tulsa, Shirley Cunningham and husband Gene of Pittsburg, Kansas, Nancy Callahan of Stillwater, six grandchildren, Michael, Kathryn, and Jake Callahan, Cody, Sydney, and Bryce Poage. The 2024 Friend of the National Western Honors the Crow Family Denver, CO – The prestigious Friend of the National Western award is celebrated yearly at the exclusive Red Meat Club dinner on Jan. 11, 2024. This year’s award honors the Crow family, with over 100 years of service to the
industry spanning three generations. Among the family’s many notable achievements, Dick Crow was a founding father of the Red Meat Club in the mid-1970s with the help of longtime Safeway meat buyer Cecil Hellbusch.
The Crow family is best known for their publication, Western Livestock Journal (WLJ), which the patriarch of the family, Nelson R. Crow, started in 1922. In 1968, the WLJ was passed down to his son, Dick, and in the early

1990s, Nelson’s grandson, Pete, took over the reins. Producers, commission companies, and packers relied on these papers for price discovery in their markets and other major markets around the country. Nelson quickly expanded the business to include a dairy magazine and a Western crops publication. The WLJ went on to establish a branch office in Denver, CO. At one time, Crow Publications occupied the entire fourth floor of the Livestock Exchange Building at the National Western Center in Denver. The third generation, Pete, joined the company in 1982, starting as a fieldman in the Southwest. He then moved to Denver to take on other publishing duties. When asked what has kept WLJ relevant and profitable, Pete quickly points out that it’s a combination of hiring the right people, staying on top of the markets, and having excellent original editorial content.

In the past few months we have read numerous accounts of the shipment of cattle to the area of the old Soviet Union, a big share of the numbers reported are Angus, but some Herefords have been shipped from Montana and the Dakotas. In fact, a recent article in Hereford America November/December issue (2011) highlights the KazBeef operation shipping a large group of Hereford and Angus cattle to Kazakhstan. Each of these articles on both breeds make a lot of people wonder how much of this has been done in previous years. In the 1970s the American Hereford Association and the U.S. State Department approved the purchase by the Hungarian government, at that time a Soviet Iron Curtain country, for the purchase of approximately 6,000 head of Hereford cattle. The Hungarians, after surveying the U.S., found that the cattle in the Midwestern U.S. fit their environment the best. A huge amount of Hereford females and several Hereford bulls were selected to go to Hungary. The cattle selected were very young, with the idea that the smaller animals would be cheaper to transport. Part of the arrangements made with the AHA, by the officials of Hungary was that the AHA president or vice-president would go Hungary each year and analyze the cattle operations and the quality of the cattle that had been shipped. In the event the president or the vice president could not make the trip and official of the AHA would be called upon. I was elected president of the AHA in 1976 and was designated to be the executive on the trip; I was accompanied by Lovell Kuykendall, who was at the time working for the AHA. We departed the USA from New York City, flew to London, on to Frankfurt, Germany and on to our final destination of Budapest. Because of the language barrier we were held up at the airport for several hours. People were going through the lines that were watched over by armed guards and each time we approached we

were sent back and after about the fifth time I was actually pushed back by the burly guards. It was at this time that I was taken to an official in a back room and interrogated. I explained that we were representatives of the American Hereford Association and in cooperation with the State Department we were here to work with the Hungarian government on their Hereford cattle project in Hortobagy. The official departed to check us out and came back with a sincere apology and said that our interpreter was waiting for us in a different area of the airport and we were taken to meet him. Our interpreter was a veterinarian, who spoke limited English, but he was a very fine man and I had great respect for him. He took us to our hotel in Budapest where

we remained over night. Of course, our passports were taken by an official at the hotel because we were in an Iron Curtain country, but we did not understand them taking and keeping our papers over night. Again,
we were being checked out by the authorities. The next day we were taken about 150 miles northeast of Budapest with the accompaniment of three authorities (continued on page 24)

It was quite interesting because we were put in black cars with little Hungarian flags on the fenders and proceeded at a fast pace through every little town with the horn honking. I had seen this in the movies before when so called high officials traveled through their countries,

but I thought it was just a movie thing. I was surprised and saddened by people, along the way, who were at least 90 years old, sweeping the streets and cutting grass along the highway, I felt like we had gone back in time 50 to 100 years. After arriving at the Great Hungarian Plain, near Hortobagy, an area of more that one-half million acres, we were taken to an old farm house which was
to be our headquarters for the next 10 days. The house was very bare with very few facilities and we were somewhat surprised that this was the guest house at Hortobagy. When we got there the Hungarian officials immediately had to have a drink which was a peach-apricot brandy, that they called palinka. Instead of coffee breaks we had breaks every four hours with palinka. My first job was to catalog all of the Herefords in

Cattle would be run into large pens and then put into a smaller corral for scoring, we did this from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. with only a break for limited food and palinka. The Fleckvieh cattle that the Hungarians had been using had been dying in large numbers. The serious problem was that the herd that had started out at about 1,000 head was now down to approximately 200 head. This was the reason for a major determination of the commitment to the U.S. for Hereford cattle because they had learned that Herefords were able to survive their harsh conditions. It is very interesting because the good beef was all sent to Russia; the Hungarians lived on a basic diet of fish, ducks and turkey. Before the Russians took over, in the war, the Hungarians had small farms and grew grains, ducks, turkeys and basically Fleckvieh cattle. Since the pre-war Hungarians didn’t have many cattle or much livestock most of the cattle and livestock were put into barns at night for their protection. Many of these enclosures were a basement under the house. Communism had basically taken away from the Hungarians all individual rights of ownership

and free enterprise, so when the govern ment took possession of the farms, the farm people were taken from the small farms and placed on big state farms like at Hortobagy. These people that were moved to the state farm headquarters, made quite a sizable town, whereas all of the peo ple who worked at the state farm lived there. At about 4:00 in the morning, you would hear all of the tractors leaving for farming and the tractors would all come back after we had returned from work ing the cattle all day. The food was dif ferent. We ate at a mess hall where most of the residents of the town ate but at a separate time. Breakfast was a hard roll and usually palinka and most mornings that we were there, not much more was had for the breakfast meal. Lunch was usually soup with breads and other condiments and the head of the fish was included in the soup. We didn’t have any beef, because the beef was being sent to communist Russia for their use. The locals lived on a diet of fish, ducks and turkeys, which they raised. After reviewing their original major problem of the death of most of the herd of the Fleckvieh cattle, before the Here fords arrived, I noticed that they had built huge barns, you could have prob ably played football in. I asked them about the barns and learned that it was their usual practice to round up all the cattle at night, put them in the barns and close the doors. After learning about this procedure it became obvious to me that they were killing the cattle. With that number of cattle in the barns with the doors closed they were actually contracting pnuemo nia, not the fault of the cattle but of the management. It was my decision to shut the doors on the barns and not ever put the cattle back in. This was a shocking recom mendation to them but I was advised by the chief authority they would take my recommendation. During this meeting I was quizzed if our Hereford cattle could stand the winter outside and I explained most Hereford cattle in the U.S. were always wintered outside and I assured them their Herefords could live and sur vive in their harsh climate. I then gave them many other recom mendations about various things on the operation and all but one was followed. They had a duck pond in the complex and all of the ducks were dying of dis ease. They wanted me to give them a recommendation, even though ducks are not my area of expertise. I advised them if they had a lot sickness and dis ease, they should destroy all the ducks and start over. They did not accept my suggestion and carried on with the dis eased ducks. Before Lovell and I departed Hunga ry we had a good meeting with three of the authorities in Budapest, which I ex

pect were the higher ups, but I was not informed as such during the exercise at Hortobagy. There were usually 12 to 15 authori ties with us constantly during our mis sion. Each day some new authorities would arrive and then you could de termine that day who were the higher authorities by who was talking and who was not talking. One day, after we had been at Hortobagy for about five days our loyal veterinarian/interpreter, who I had become friends with and had grown to admire, came rushing to me and in formed me that the authorities were concerned that we were becoming too friendly and he would be taken away. He said goodbye and was gone within 10 minutes. Within a few minutes, a new young communistic-type authority ap peared and informed me that he would now be my interpreter for the rest of the trip. It was obvious that he thought he could get some political information from me and he was very coy about his
approach. At this point we lost all inside connection with the job that were sent to Hungary to do. When the job was done Lovell and I were sent back to Budapest
for our final meeting the next day. The trip from Hortobagy to Budapest was much different than the day we arrived. (continued from page 30)

This is one that we have been excited about all summer and he continues to impress. These Barracuda bulls are incredible but this sire is double bred for IMF being out of a Validated daughter who is a trait leader for carcass quality. (continued from page 28) We were put in an old vehicle at night with one of the authorities and two other people who had requested a ride back to Budapest. It was like riding with a group of people that I will call intoxicated and noisy, consequently I was very tired after all of the long day and short nights. No more black cars and honking through the streets it was obvious that we were being dismissed. However, we were treated well by the authorities at our meeting the next day in Budapest and we were then dismissed from the job by the authorities. We were on our own. Another group of Hereford cattle were soon arriving by plane in Madrid for Spanish breeders. Lovell immediately left Budapest to meet the cattle on arrival in Madrid which left me alone the next day until I was later able to meet him at Madrid’s Great Expo. I later learned that the American Herefords did a great job of living out the winters in the harsh environment of Hortobagy. One of the authorities, many years later, asked about Mr. Bayers and how he was, he said, “He was very nice man and did a very good job but no can drink!” The Hungarians were very nice people and we were treated well but I always felt bad that they were depressed by the Russian invasion and occupation and I often look back and wonder what Hungary is like now that it is independent again. I am sure the Herefords are still doing well there. This all occurred 35 years ago and I wish I could return to revisit our check through Hungary. Some of the authorities that we dealt with have run for higher office in Hungary in the past 10 years and I do not know if they were successful or not. If they were Hungary still has communist influence. After another hectic time at the airport upon departure and a big young guard with an automatic machine gun going through all of my bags, I was finally cleared to leave the country. I flew to Milan and on to Madrid, and met my wife, Pauline, who had flown over the pond to London and then down to Madrid. We reconnected with Lovell in Madrid, who was having a new set of problems. A 747 plane load of Herefords had arrived in Madrid and the paperwork was not adequate for the authorities to unload the cattle. It seems as though the mayor of a small town in Arizona had signed the papers and the Spanish authorities could not find the town that was reported to me to be a town of 10 people or so. Lovell told the authorities they needed to unload the cattle by the end of the day or the cattle would die on the airplane but the authorities didn’t seem to care. Lovell knew a breeder in Spain that was close to the dictator, Franco, and shortly after the breeder called the dictator the cattle were unloaded. After that

Lovell headed back to the U.S. and on to Kansas City. After taking in the Spanish version of the World Trade Fair and seeing more Herefords, we saw more Spansih history and some people living in the small towns of the Basque community to the north. We were then on our way home. After many hours of our non-stop flight, from Madrid to New York, we flew on our approach low over the Statue of Liberty, and as tears seeped from my eyes as the 747’s wheels touched down and we were back again in the good old USA. People who have never been to other parts of the world or to countries that were under the old Soviet regime don’t realize what we have in this country. Sure we have faults but there in no country like this country. As you look back on the monumental deal some 35 years ago, things have changed. To start with the Soviet Union has been broken up. The cattle sent to Hungary were always cared for after
they were there, by Hungarians, not like a lot of these recent sales where cowboys and vets were sent over to get things started. In some recent cases, Americans have retained ownership
of some of the cattle but the Hungarians paid for and took care of the cattle with only a little technical advice from us. This is a great tribute to the Hereford breed. — BB

KANSAS CITY, MO – Ramsey Hot Pants 204 ET and KLM Rollin Harley 107J ET were named Grand Champions on the green chips at the 2023 North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, KY, Nov. 14. Judges Max Stotz, Skiatook, OL, and Dale Kottkamp, Clayton, IN, sorted the 148-head show. “I’ve been really blessed through all my years in the Hereford breed to be surrounded by some really good people,” Stotz said before selecting the Grand Champion Bull. “Not only my family, but there’s people around and in this ring that I’ve worked with and worked for, and I’ve just been blessed in my career to be part of this Hereford organization. Thank you Hereford breeders for allowing me to be part of your family for this many years.” In the female show, Grand Champion honors went to Ramsey Hot Pants 204 ET, owned by Ramseys Herefords, Greenfield, IN. The Champion Junior Yearling Female is a Feb. 5, 2022, daughter of BR Hutton 4030ET. Reserve Grand Champion Female honors were awarded to SSF KKH 15U Olaina 303 ET, exhibited by Piper Seiss, Thurmont, MD. The Jan. 20, 2023, daughter of H The Profit 8426 ET also won the Champion Junior Heifer Calf title. The Grand Champion Bull banner went to KLM Rollin Harley 107J ET, owned by Colten Miigerl, Ravenna, NE. The April 16, 2021, son of TFR KU Roll the Dice 1326 was first named Champion Senior Bull. American Royal Starts Construction on Sizable New Building Complex of pride about Kansas’ deep agriculture heritage, perhaps inspiring them to pursue a career here.” Before the barn raising program, supporters enjoyed lunch, toured the future home of the American Royal, viewed updated renderings and signed a steel beam that will be used in constructing the new facility. “The new American Royal complex will be a place where relevant conferences, collaborations and events fo-
cused on innovations in food, fiber and fuel can happen,” said Cliff Illig, member of the American Royal Board of Directors. “Visitors of all ages and backgrounds will come together to learn, celebrate and advance an industry that impacts each and every one of us, every single day.” Lindsey Patterson Smith, co-chair of the American Royal campaign cabinet, shared a vision for the American Royal Association from her late father, Neal Patterson, with barn raising attendees.
“I am beyond thrilled to celebrate this milestone for the American Royal,” said Patterson Smith. “My father, the late Neal Patterson, saw the opportunity the American Royal holds in creating a connection between agrarian and urban lifestyles, but knew that the organization needed to continue to evolve. The vision for the American Royal is aligned with that opportunity, and this facility is a critical tool to get there.” The American Royal’s new development will have a significant impact
on the agricultural community and the Kansas City region as the organization positions itself as the epicenter of agriculture. The facility is expected to host its first event in late 2025 or early 2026.

Two state cattle industry leaders have been named to the North Dakota Stockmen’s Foundation (NDSF) Board of Directors. Tim Erbele of Streeter, ND and Scott Katus of Watauga, SD, were recently appointed as directors of the 501(c)3 charitable organization. Established in 2008, the NDSF works to provide hope and opportunity for the state’s cattle industry in this and future generations through scholarship, leadership, promotion, research, building and disaster relief objectives. “We are excited to welcome Tim and Scott to the board,” said NDSF President Jeff Schafer of New Rockford, ND. “Their vast industry and community service experience and vision will be perfect complements to our board and will help the Stockmen’s Foundation accomplish its mission.” Erbele runs a diversified livestock and crop operation. He owns a SalersAngus-cross cow-calf operation and operates a 1,200-head permitted feedlot. He is also a Purina feed dealer. Erbele and his wife Ronda have two daughters, Miranda (Andy) Hagen and Addyson. He is committed to industry service, having served on the North Dakota Stockmen’s Association (NDSA) Board of Directors for two terms, where he assumed the role of Animal Health Committee chairman. He is also involved with his local Farmers Co-op Elevator Board of Directors in Streeter and is an elder of the Crossroad Church. Katus and his wife Heather have four children, Jacy (Andy) Mrnak, Cole (Brooke), Braydon and Tally, and three grandchildren, Sloan, Lincoln and Jaylee. Katus, his wife and their sons operate a commercial Angus cow-calf operation and small registered Angus herd. They utilize both Angus and Hereford bulls. The family runs a heifer development program, producing Angus and black-white-face bred heifers. They background steers and also grow corn, sunflowers, wheat, barley, oats, sorghum, millet and alfalfa for feed and cash crops. He serves on the McIntosh Co-op Board and is a past president (continued on page 38)

Cattlemen’s Congress Hereford Show Winners KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Herefords hit the Oklahoma red dirt as judge Kyle Colyer, Bruneau, ID, sorted the 58-head Hereford bull show and 220-head Hereford female show at the 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, OK, to find his champions with son, Cruz, by his side. Throughout the four-day national Hereford show, Jan. 3-6, a total of 572 Herefords were exhibited. Bull show champions
Buck Cattle Co., Madill, OK; Ella Weldon, Piedmont, OK; and 6 Mile Creek LLC, Yukon, OK, received the Polled Grand Champion Bull banner with BK Jet Smooth J18 ET. The champion senior bull, born Sept. 10, 2021, was sired by JDH AH Standout 16G ET. Curry Herefords, McAlester, OK, took home the Reserve Champion Bull title with CH Premier 233 ET. The KLD RW Marksman D87 ET son was born March 22, 2022, and was also named champion yearling bull. Cattlemen’s Congress Pen Show Honors KANSAS CITY, MO – GKB Cattle, Desdemona, Texas, grabbed the Pen-ofThree bull banner on Thursday, Jan. 4, during the 2024 Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City, OK Burns Farms, Pikeville, TN, won the Pen-of-Five Bull Show, and Delaney Herefords, Lake Benton, MN, topped the Pen-of-Three Female Show. Jan Ward, Sheridan, WY; Ryan Topp, Grace City, ND; and Jeff Gooden, Oak Grove, MO, sorted the pen show, which included 11 female pens, one Pen-of-Five bull entry and six Pen-of-Three bull entries for a total of 56 Hereford cattle. The Grand Champion title in the Pen-of-Three Bull Show went to GKB Cattle, with the group first winning the junior bull calf division. In recognition for their Champion Pen of Bulls, GKB Cattle received the fourth annual Arlo Janssen Memorial Award in remembrance of longtime Hereford exhibitor and herdsman, Arlo Janssen. The Champion Pen of Three was sired by C GKB Guardian 1015 ET, and the group averaged 1,270 lbs. with a calculated weight per day of age (WDA) of 3.52. Delaney Herefords exhibited the Reserve Champion Pen-of-Three junior bull calves before being selected as the
Reserve Grand Champion pen with a group sired by SHF Houston D287 H086 and RST Final Print 0016. The pen weighed an average of 1,151 lbs. with a 3.35 WDA. Burns Farms brought home the Champion Pen-of-Five Bulls with their Champion Pen of senior bull calves. The group was sired by KSU Land Grant 153 ET and RST Final Print 0016, and posted an average weight of 833 lbs. with a 2.49 WDA. Matheny Herefords, Mayslick, KY, showed the Reserve Grand Champion Pen-of-Three Females, also taking Reserve Champion honors in the junior heifer calf division. These heifers were sired by TH Masterplan 183F ET and NJW 202C 173D Steadfast 156. The pen weighed an average of 832 lbs. and measured a 2.53 WDA.

The pen weighed an average of 1,157 lbs. and calculated a 3.43 WDA. Reserve Champion honors for the Pen-of-Three Bull Show went to Chapman Land and Cattle, Nunnelly, TN, with the group winning the senior bull calf division. The calves were sired by RST Final Print 0016 and NJW 133A 6589 Manifest 87G. They averaged 1,497 lbs. and had a calculated WDA of 3.62. Jensen Bros. showed the Grand Champion Pen-of-Three Females and the champion pen of junior heifer calves. These heifers were sired by UPS Harvester 9985 with an average weight of 918 lbs. and a WDA of 2.96. The Reserve Champion Pen of Females and reserve champion junior heifer calf pen was exhibited by Bill King Ranch, Moriarty, NM. The group was sired by C Key West 0065, C 8086 Sancho 1084 ET and C GKB Guardian 1015 ET and posted an average weight of 1,012 lbs. with a 2.81 WDA.

$100,000 in Vanier Family Scholarships Awarded to Ten Deserving Hereford Juniors KANSAS CITY, MO. — Ten National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members received the prestigious $10,000 Vanier Family Scholarship dur ing the American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting and Conference in Kansas City. Since 2008, the Vanier family of CK Ranch in Kansas has awarded scholar ships to Hereford youth, and since 2016, they have annually given $100,000 in HYFA scholarships, totalling more than $800,000 to assist NJHA members as they work hard to better their education. “The Vanier Family name and HYFA are synonymous with supporting Here ford youth and over their lifetimes, the late Jack and Donna Vanier gave so much to so many, in the most humble way,” said Amy Cowan, director of youth activities and foundation for the AHA. “The foundation is built on the pillars of scholarship, leadership, research and education, and we are so grateful to the entire Vanier family for all they have given and all they have done to pave the way for youth in agriculture through scholarship and education.” The Vanier family is proud of the NJHA members and believes the work ethic young people learn growing up in the Hereford breed sets them apart in today’s workforce. The foundation is proud to carry on Jack and Donna’s legacy through this prestigious scholar ship program. JW Cox, Flemingsburg, KY, is in his first year at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine, with goals of following in his late step-father’s footsteps to become a large animal veterinarian and start his own practice with a focus on embryology. He has worked with 4-H, FFA and other youth organizations, assisting with showmanship and animal care techniques. “Just working as a group leader and getting to help out all of those kids was one of my favorite things. Just getting to be involved and help hopefully shape these young people into showmen, breeders and great leaders in this industry that we all love so much,”
Cox said. Lauren Gatz, from Fairview, KS, is a junior at Kansas State University studying agricultural communications and journalism. Having previously served as the National Hereford Queen and currently serving her first year on the NJHA board of directors, she is extremely involved in the Hereford breed. “I’m positive that I will stay connected through my involvement in the local 4-H program and the NJHA,” Gatz said. “In my future career, I aspire to advocate for the agricultural industry, bridging my passion for service with my chosen profession.” Clayton Hayes, Ada, OK, is a freshman at Oklahoma State University studying natural resources ecology and management, with future career goals of working for the state of Oklahoma as a game warden. He says, “Oklahoma is an ecologically diverse state and rich in
wildlife habitats. Training and educating individuals to be good stewards of Oklahoma’s resources and upholding wildlife laws is important.” Trevor Johnson, of Centerville, SD, is a senior at Kansas State University studying agribusiness. Johnson’s dedication to Herefords and the beef industry starts with the commercial sector and feedlot industry, where he participated in the NJHA Fed Steer Shootout and has spent his summers interning for feedyards. Johnson says, “Since high school, I have had career aspirations of working into a feedlot management career with the intent of making a lasting impact on both the cattle and beef industries and earning induction into the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame.” Lauren Jones, Darlington, WI, is a junior working to receive her degree in animal science with a concentration in livestock merchandising from Oklahoma

She has completed several internships, including a Simmental National Classic Show internship and a communications internship with Tanbark Consulting, while serving her final year on the NJHA board of directors. “I have interest in multiple potential careers including nutritionist, embryologist and veterinarian. I am focused on taking classes that push me towards my degree, but also keep my foot in the door of each career avenue that I am exploring,” Jones says. Savay Sexton, Cost, TX, is a freshman at Texas A&M University studying agriculture leadership and development. “My career goal is to work in international agritourism, bringing people together to have agricultural experiences to grow their understanding of agriculturists’ dedication to creating a safe and wholesome food supply,” Sexton says. “I will do this by coordinating tours across the United States and Europe, showcasing agriculture entities and how the effects of policy, culture, technology, history and legacies weave together.” Logan Topp, Carrington, ND, is in his junior year at Kansas State University studying animal sciences and industry with a business option. His goal is to return to the family ranch operation after gaining experience in the cattle feeding and packing industries. Topp says, “Knowing more about how the whole industry works can help us improve how we manage our ranches.” He is also hoping to bring back more hands-on experience in finance management and cattle merchandising. Weston Wolf, Alexandria, KY, is in his sophomore year working towards a degree in agricultural economics from the University of Kentucky His future goals are to work alongside farmers and ranchers in their financial management and marketing. Wolf is active in different programs supporting those with autism, and has learned from those programs himself, stating, “The most important traits that I have acquired that will help me through college and my career are patience, communication, empathy and compassion. I know that whatever career I choose, I will have to communicate and work with others and I am grateful that the lessons I have learned through those who battle autism will assist me in all of my endeavors.” “The foundation takes great pride in our scholarship program and the opportunities we are able to provide to assist our young people throughout their college journeys,” Cowan says. “The selection committee continues to be impressed by the high caliber of applicants and are confident that today’s NJHA members will be tomorrow’s leaders in whatever industry they pursue.” The scholarship fund is the bedrock of HYFA and countless youth are benefactors of its mission. This last fiscal year, the foundation celebrated net assets reaching $6.3 million and in total $221,500 was given back to Hereford youth to assist with their college educations.

Ball Foundation/Cottonwood Springs Farm Scholarship Awarded to Lunsford KANSAS CITY, MO — Kaylee Lunsford, Fort Scott, KS, was awarded the 2023 Ball Foundation/Cottonwood Springs Farm Scholarship during the 2023 American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting and Conference in Kansas City, MO. In a special awards ceremony, the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA) and its donors proudly awarded $163,000 in scholarships to 27 National Junior Hereford Association (NJHA) members to help support their higher-education goals. Lunsford is a freshman at Oklahoma State University (OSU) studying animal science and international agriculture leadership. A recent recipient of the NJHA Golden Bull Achievement Award, a coveted award for junior members each spring, she has goals of entering international agriculture to promote the U.S. agriculture industry. As a certified scuba instructor, she volunteers with the Scuba Schools International Scuba Rangers Program as an assistant instructor and has developed a passion for assisting the next generation through this program. “This program has shown me that investing in future generations and striving to be a quality leader or role model is something that is important and essential for the future of my community,” said Lunsford. “My current goal is to complete my double major in animal science and international agriculture leadership at OSU (Oklahoma State University), where I plan to continue using these experiences to dedicate my life to agriculture and investing in future generations. ” The $5,000 scholarship honors the legacy of Nancy Keilty’s late father and mother, Ed and Virginia Ball. They instilled in her the mentality of always “leaving the campsite better than you found it,” and this scholarship is designed to recognize a Hereford junior with the same mentality. Mitchem Receives Bar One Ranch Scholarship
KANSAS CITY, MO — Regan Mitchem, Vale, NC, was awarded the Bar One Ranch Scholarship during the 2023 American Hereford Association (AHA) Annual Meeting and Conference in Kansas City, MO. Mitchem is a first-year student at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She credits the NJHA and her own North Carolina Junior Hereford Association for pushing her outside of her comfort zone and encouraging her to create connections across the country. She plans to focus her career efforts after graduation in rural areas and agriculture. “There is a nation-wide shortage of food animal veterinarians,” Mitchem says.“What better way to give back to the industry that I love than to provide veterinary services to areas in need?” The Bar One Ranch Scholarship, sponsored by HYFA, is a $5,000 scholarship offered by George and Karen Sprague of Bar One Ranch in Oregon. The scholarship is in memory of their late friend, Ken Tracy, who was a friend to the entire Hereford breed.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wesley Denton, Blue Rapids, KS, was awarded the CBY Polled Herefords, Bob and Dolores Call Scholarship. A senior at Kansas State University, Denton will be receiving his degree in animal sciences and industry in the spring of 2024. His career goals center around the beef production industry, wanting to work as a cattle buyer or beef merchandiser, while also assisting with carrying on his family’s operation, Springhill Herefords. He is in his final year serving on the NJHA board of directors and has succeeded inside and out of the showring, learning some impactful lessons throughout his junior career. “Showing and raising Hereford cattle taught me how to keep records, how to lose with grace, and that there are always opportunities to improve,” said Denton. “Being a NJHA member has helped me increase my confidence, enhance my public speaking skills and has greatly impacted the person I am today and who I strive to be.” The CBY Polled Herefords, Bob and Dolores Call Scholarship, sponsored by HYFA, is a $5,000 scholarship offered in honor of Dolores Call and her late husband, Bob. Bob was a founding member of the HYFA board of directors and an integral part of building the framework for the scholarship pillar that is making a difference for so many young people.
