In August I had the plea sure of help ing out at the SD Hereford Association’s Jill Hotchkiss Ribeye Steak Sandwich booth at Dakotafest. Each year for about the last 15+, the South Dakota Here ford Association has had booth there and it just gets better and better. With such an incredible product it is easy to understand why it is so popu lar. Breeder participation is encouraged and there is rarely a shortage of help. It is really a testament of the wonder ful Hereford breeders in this state and their dedication to the breed and their state orga nization. Believe me, there are a lot of very hard workers in this group and they know how to work together. Imagine a group of farmers, ranchers, men and women, young and old who can put a sandwich together in 3.5 sec onds. That’s pretty impres sive! Then there is the grilling crew. We (the sandwich mak ers) aren’t sure what all goes on back there at the grills but it is an incredibly hot, smoky, thankless job unless you con (continued on page 8)

Phenomenal year for SDHA’s CHB ribeye steak sandwiches at Dakotafest By Jill Bayers Hotchkiss Once again the South Dakota Hereford Asso ciation (SDHA) and its members had a fantastic year serving Certified Hereford Beef® ribeye steak sandwiches at Dakotafest. It is one of the most popular food items at the event. “We served around 4,150 lbs. of CHB ribeyes at our busiest point on Wednesday,” said SDHA comanager Mark Johnson. “I calculated that from 11-1 we served a sandwich every 3.5 seconds.” And in order to keep up with the pace, a large crew of experienced workers is a must. Over the years, the entire process has been honed to a fine (continued on page 10)
Greater Omaha announces start-up of high speed box storage warehouse By Jan Ellefson Greater Omaha Packing is ex cited to announce the start-up of a new Automatic Box Storage warehouse located at their pro duction facility in Omaha, NE. This new, high speed automat ed warehouse will allow Greater Omaha Packing to better service its over 200 customers in 65+ countries worldwide. The compa ny will be able to more efficiently ship its 6,000 products, allowing for specific product sequencing within the pallet and truck, tai lored to each individual customer. This is not the first expan sion project for Greater Omaha over the last few years. The Val
ue Added Facility started production in January of 2015 and their state of the art ground beef facility was added in May of 2016. With Greater Oma ha’s ever expanding customer base, ad ditional space was needed for storage, shipping, and a new robotic box picking system was neces sary for more effi ciency. Manned primarily by men, they can cook roughly 75 steaks at one time, if there are enough people to help pull steaks off at just the right time. Jeff Gerlach who is the grillmaster (my term, not his) says, 5 rounds per hour, 350 steaks per hour and two grills. All this for about 6 hours straight. So it is possible to grill approximately 4,200 steaks in a day if needed. There were quite a few die-hard grillers/chefs and their work is important.They obviously do a great job at it and have the timing just right. These guys start the grills at about 9:00 in the morning and the first steaks come off about 45 minutes later. By 11:00 in the morning a substantial quantity is needed for the crowd that shows up soon afterward. What a great event and great people. Congratulations to all who were involved!!! (See the rest of the story on the front page.) After eating one of those delicious steak sandwiches, it is unfathomable that anyone would want to make, market or eat fake meat. In the headlines of the ag press recently, was the news about “cell-based, protein products.” What? Yes, lab-grown meat also called alternative proteins or cell-cultured meat. After all of the hubub the last few years about GMOs in plantbased food, I can’t believe labgrown meat is even in the news. Plant cells are quite different from animal cells so I can’t fathom a lab-grown meat product being accepted by most consumers. To me it is revolting. With all this in the headlines of course the subject is quickly being reviewed by organizations and the government. “This is an important opportunity to hear from the agricultural industry and consumers as we consider the regulatory framework for these new products,” said Agriculture Secretary Perdue.
“American farmers and ranchers feed the world, but as technology advances, we must consider how to inspect and regulate to ensure food safety, regardless of the production method.” “The FDA knows just how vital it is to ensure the safety of our nation’s food supply and the critical role science-based, modern regulatory frameworks are to fostering innovation,” said Food and Drug Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. Out of government and into another realm, according to an article by Kayla Sargent in the Western Ag Reporter, Maggie Nutter from Sweetgrass, MT, raised $11,000 in order to research the firms pushing lab raised meat. We shouldn’t be surprised that in her findings the company’s goal is to eliminate animal agriculture. The article quoted her saying, “In 2008, PETA offered $1 million to the first company to produce ‘in-vitro’ chicken products, saying it was a small price to pay for something that will save 1 million lives an hour. “But, that’s chicken lives,” Nutter said. “Not human lives. They don’t even think about our livelihoods.” If it wasn’t so serious it would be laughable. Wow, what a bunch of misguided individuals to say the least. More on this another time. EPD changes? Not enough room. Maybe next month. Summer is quickly turning to fall here in the north country and producers will soon be weaning calves. It’s been a fairly good summer in our area but is quickly drying out. At least there was hay this year. As I write this we are enjoying a cool, misty morning, a harbinger of fall weather. Our hearts go out to everyone in the Carolinas, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and surrounding states who are being affected by hurricane Florence. We are always at the mercy of Mother Nature and this storm is another recordbreaker the affects of which will be felt for a long time. — JBH

Dakotafest big event for SDHA and CHB (continued from page 1)
science. Current SDHA managers Mark and Jeanne Johnson are doing a stellar job of leading and implementing the project but they couldn’t do it alone. That is the beauty of its success. All SDHA members are encouraged to participate but consignors to the state sales are required to help. “We really tapped into junior members for help on Tuesday before school started. Our workers might have been up to half juniors working that day! It’s a great way for them to get to know the adult membership better and also see a lot of these kids come back and work as they age into the adult association,” said Mark. It doesn’t take a lot of coaxing because people like working together on the project.
“It’s a week of work that couldn’t be done with out all the help from the membership,” says Jeanne Johnson. “It takes about 30 people a day to run the stand over the noon hour each day. We are very thankful for all the volunteers!” Dakotafest is a 3-day, largely openair event held at the Schlaffman Farm in Mitchell, SD. It is held on Tuesday through Thursday, the third week in August. They have over 500 vendors ranging from seed and equipment companies to livestock demonstrations, political forums, lots of good food and more. Dakotafest is a part of the IDEAg events group. The SDHA booth is one of several food booths at the event. A huge marketing tool SDHA has in its favor is the

wonderful aroma of cooking beef wafting through the grounds. It is backed up by a superior eating experience. All this plus a loyal following really packs them in. The lines start forming at about 11:00 in the morning and continues for several hours. Several companies who display equipment or products at Dakotafest buy SDHA Ribeye Sand-
wich tickets in advance and give these to their customers. It’s an incredible gift for their customers and good business for SDHA. “It was a record year for pre-show ticket requests and that continues to drive the growth of the event for us,” says Mark Johnson. “We see new companies use the sandwiches for customer appreciation every year. In fact, this year we had a company come get tickets to give away that wasn’t even an exhibitor at the show.” Ticket sales from affiliated industries make up about 80% of the sales. With over 4,000 lbs. of CHB needed, a local supplier is a definite plus. “Our continued relationship with the Mitchell Coborn’s, the local CHB retailer, has proven to help streamline the event from a business and convenience standpoint,” Mark and Jeanne said. “This really helps us control meat inventory and takes the worry off of having too much or not enough. They also view it as a huge promotion for their store. It’s a definite win-win.” This year the SDHA added a cement pad to their sandwich stand which includes two covered areas, one for eating tables and the (continued on page 12)

The concrete slab inside the prep area was an investment that has helped serving space, convenience and overall cleanliness, according to the managers. The original reason for getting into the sandwich business was to help fund the SD Junior Hereford events. The reason continues to this day and is at the heart of the program but it’s so much more. “The work put into Dakotafest continues to develop our Junior program,” Mark said. “Our numbers at the State Fair for our junior show are almost twice that of the next largest breed’s show.” The managers and everyone who helps at the sandwich stand work hard but enjoy the process. “It’s a busy few days, but I think everyone has a good time, which helps build the association beyond finances,” concluded Mark and Jeanne.

Morris L. Hagberg was born January 8, 1932, to Ernest L. and Hilda (Nelson) Hagberg at the family farm east of Spencer, NE. He attended School District #27 for eight years, and graduated from Spencer High School in 1949. Morris was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bristow, NE. Morris served in the United States Army in Japan from 1954 until 1956. He then began farming and raising cattle and Quarter Horses. On September 1, 1957, Morris and Nola Klasna were united in marriage at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Spencer and he became a member of Our Saviour’s. They moved to the farm in January 1958 and lived in the house where Morris was born until January 2016, when they moved into their home in Spencer. Morris drove to the farm daily until April of this year when his health failed and he was hospitalized at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk, NE and O’Neill Care and Rehabilitation. He passed away on June 14, 2018, at Faith Regional Health Services. Morris’ greatest joys were being with his grandchildren and taking his dog Blue along in the Ranger to check on his cattle and horses. Morris is survived by his wife, Nola; son, Kent (Danell) Hagberg of Spen-
cer; daughter, D’Ann (Carl “Speed”) Gehlsen, Jr. of Mission, SD; son, Shawn (Mallory) Hagberg of Spencer; grandchildren, Adam (Kerstin) Hagberg and their children, Gavin, Sophie, and Chloe of Corvallis, MT; Andrew (Kendra) Hagberg and their children, Baleigh, Ascher, and Cooper of Hickman, NE; Erik Hagberg of Spencer, Darcy Hagberg (Kyle Eddy) of Nashville, TN; and Halie, Katelynn, Damien, Hazel, and Hadley Hagberg of Spencer; brothers, Rev. High School in 1944 and immediately enlisted into the Navy where he spent almost four years of his life serving in WWII. The ship he was on was called the USS Buckley DE 51. When he returned from the Navy, he helped his dad farm. On May 28, 1950 he was united in marriage to Leota E. Earhart. They started their life farming just south of the Nebraska-Kansas State Line. They were blessed with two children, Sheila Sue and Marlys Janeen. In 1957 they moved to Beatrice, NE so Sheila could attend the Martin Luther Home School. Richard worked at Dempsters for two years, Household Supply for 17 years and Store Kraft Manufacturing for over 34 years which he then retired in 1990. Richard continued to work in Beatrice and still continued to farm in Kansas. He farmed and raised Polled Hereford cattle for many years. He was a life long member of the Nebraska Hereford Association and the American Here ford Association. His love was his family, farming and cattle. He loved to watch Nebraska football, volleyball and basketball (especially when his great-nephew, Trevor Menke, was on the team). He also was a Royals Fan and enjoyed following them on TV. He had many “coffee drinking” buddies over the years. When living in Beatrice, the coffee crew always hung out at Country Cookin. After moving to Fairbury he had different “coffee buddies” that hung out at Fairbury Sale Barn. He enjoyed that very much. His greatest love was his children and his grandchildren – Megan and Marc. In 2000 Richard moved to Fairbury only a few houses North of Marlys to be closer to his family. The grandkids spent endless time with Grandpa either at his house, the farm, the sale barn or wherever. He enjoyed seeing them graduate from high school & college, saw them get married and greatly enjoyed the great-grandkids – Marley, McKinley, Rory and Mara. He never missed any “outing” of any kind with his family. The great-grandkids would always want to go to Grandpa Menke’s house so they could eat Pringles and/or ice cream. Richard was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Beatrice, VFW Legion and American Legion in Beatrice, NE. Survivors include his daughter Marlys Hanson and husband Mike; granddaughter Megan Rosener and husband Joey; grandson Marc Hanson and wife Michelle; great-grandchildren, Marley & Rory Rosener and McKinley and Mara Hanson all of Fairbury. Sister in law, Phyllis Menke of Fairbury, brother Donald Menke and wife Marilyn of Washington, KS and sister Lavon Nigh and husband Jim of Omaha, sister in law Agnes Marsteller of Washington, KS, many nieces and nephews, friends and his part-time porch sitting dog, Roxie. Earl Britton
Earl Britton passed away late Sunday evening, Sept. 9, 2018, at Big Sky Assisted Living in Butte, MT. Earl was born on April 3, 1920 in Sanborn, IA. His parents were Fred and Pearle (Cole) Britton. He was raised on an Iowa farm
and attended school in Sanborn. In 1941, he married Mary Enenbach, who had just graduated from nursing school. They lived on an Iowa farm for five years. In 1946, they moved to Butte, MT. He worked for and represented a large cattle company from Sioux City, IA. In 1966, Earl, and three partners, purchased the Montana Livestock Auction Company in Butte. In 1971, he was elected president of the National Markets Association, which consisted of the markets in the United States and Canada. Earl also served on the Board of the Lady of the Rockies.
Earl liked to fish and was especially fond of snow skiing and waterskiing. He skied until he was 87. Surviving him are his son, Craig and his wife, Shirley; daughter, Joani and son-in-law, Jim Kissock; daughter, Anne and son-in-law, Jack Sanders; daughter, Kay and son-in-law, Al Hjellum; daughter, Becki and son-in-law, Don Birch; 13 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Jane L. Glennie
Jane L. Glennie 84, of Harlowton died in her daughter Janie’s arms and in the presence of her grandson Jason at sundown on Sunday, September 9, 2018. Jane Law was born during a snow storm in Lewistown, Montana on April 26, 1934 – the youngest of three girls born to Jim and Helen (Baxter) Law. All Jane ever wanted to be was a cowboy. She spent most of her time growing up on the Baxter Ranch. Her uncle Bob Baxter was her mentor. She was really handy with a fly rod and became a crack shot. She went to Harlowton High School and was the youngest Junior Rifleman instructor in the nation. Jane claimed that she was never in trouble and received good grades! This may be in some dispute. Jane attended college at the University of Montana in Missoula and graduated with a degree in Education. A lifetime of winning all the Bobcat-Grizzly football bets caused some first-class hissy fits from the rest of her family since they were all Bobcats! Maybe that’s why she was the brains of the outfit! Jane was captivated by horses at a young age by a big black horse named Star. Then she was given a mare named Flicka that Gib McFarland raised. Flicka was a Steel Dust-bred horse, and that started a lifetime of roping and riding.

She won an All-Around Cowboy buckle, a very prized possession! She also won the 1966 Montana Rodeo Association Champion Barrel Racer on a little bay gelding named Chester that Jane bought from John Harstad. One night in the Two Dot Bar she got engaged to George Glennie, and they were married on November 29,1958 on the Baxter Ranch. Jane and George were both very active in the day-to-day ranching activities. At the time everything was fed with a team and wagon. They raised their daughter Janie along with top notch Hereford cattle. The Glennie Ranch continues to be known for the quality of its cattle, although they turned black in the 1990’s, and its outstanding horse herd. George passed away in 1980, and Jane continued to run the daily ranching operations. Ranching became increasingly complex, but Jane ran a darn shipshape outfit and was attentive to every detail. One of the highlights of Jane’s life was being featured in a 1982 front page article of the Wall Street Journal. In a portrait of a tough and savy ranch woman succeeding in a man’s world, Jane is quoted as saying”…You can spend all day cleaning to make your house look slick. Then you turn around and it’s a mess again. But get yourself some barbwire and steel posts and build a good fence and you can admire that for 20 years…” In addition to running the ranch, Jane was a director on the Board of the Continental National Bank in Harlowton from 1980 until it merged with Citizen’s Bank

Jane was recognized as the Montana Hereford Woman of the Year in 1987, the Wheatland County Stockgrowers Stockman of the Year in 1997, she received the Montana Hall and Wall of Fame Cowboy and Cowgirl Heritage Award in 2016, the Northern Livestock Video Auction Pioneer Rancher of the Year in 2012, and the Wheatland County Friends of the Fair Award in 2016. Jane was one of the selected Drovers on the 1989 Montana Centennial Cattle Drive. Jane was a Kappa Alpha Theta and a lifelong member of the Republican Party. Jane was an enthusiastic supporter of the Harlowton Engineers and the broader community. She played an important role in establishing the Two Dot Community Center and Firehall and she served on the Two Dot school board. Jane never missed anything that her daughter Janie or her grandson Jason participated in. She logged endless miles to attend basketball and football games, track meets, Range Days, ropings and rodeos. She was a supporter of 4H and worked behind the scenes to ensure that kids were well mounted in Wheatland County and beyond. Jane had a particular soft spot for little girls that lived in town that wanted a horse… Strong in her opinions, Jane never lost an argument – even when she was wrong! But Jane enjoyed a good laugh, and could tell epic tales of ranch mishaps and misdeeds that left everyone rolling in the aisles. And as long as no one was hurt, she really loved watching a good ranch wreck unfold! Her handshake was
an ironclad guarantee, and a more loyal friend never existed. Jane is survived by her daughter Janie Carlson, grandson Jason Carlson, nephews Bob Russell, James Mollander, George Mollander and niece Carol Mollander. In addition to her husband Jane was preceded in death by her parents Helen and Jim Law, her sisters Mary Fran Mollander (Denny) and Helen (Doodie) Russell (Spen). Jane was grateful for the kind and attentive care she received from the doctors, nurses and staff of the Wheatland Memorial Hospital and Nursing Home during the last few years. In particular, she would like to acknowledge the affectionate care she had from Wendy, Cindy, Atha, Lorna and Janell. She loved playing Bingo with the other residents. Very special care taker Kathy Miller and her dog Roper… I can’t describe the feelings. Jane had for your companionship. Thank you so very much. Jane’s favorite things were really good cattle, top-notch cow horses, her dogs and cats – especially Cairn Terrier Oscar- her swather, her four-wheel drive, rain, brook trout, her .30-.30, calf fries, her daughter Janie and her grandson Critter! 2018 Kansas Hereford Tour By Tom Granzow The annual Kansas Hereford Tour was held on August 18 & 19 in the north-central region of the state, starting near Phillipsburg and continuing south from there to the Russell area and on to the area around Great Bend. Kansas had been terribly dry up to that point in the summer and many were concerned as to how the cattle would look, but the breeders involved knew their cattle would shine through the adversity and prove that these Hereford cattle will perform in all conditions. The tour goers were not disappointed as the quality of the cattle on display was very good, just like always. Ranches participating on the first day of this year’s tour included Double J Herefords, owned by the Ken & Brock Johnson families near Phillipsburg, Broken B Herefords, Oliver & Caitlin Beall and their family near Stockton, Herbel XP Herefords, owned by Jon Herbel and his family from Lucas, and Meitler Herefords, owned by Gene Meitler and his sons Clint & Darris and their families. We also need to thank our sponsors for this year: Hereford America, Smart Lic, KEY Feeds, KFRM Radio and Hawley Printing. Their support is greatly appreciated. We started at the Double J outfit where they showed us their Line One cattle. Their newest herd sires were on display and they also had a very nice set of spring calving cows penned up for everyone to look at, and a few of the bulls they have for sale. Next we went into Stockton where we had lunch and were able to listen to Kevin Schultz, president of the AHA board, and fieldman Levi Landers give an update on the AHA and the current things that they are involved with. This included more genetic research and updates on CHB going to an all Choice program. I also want to thank the folks at CarswellNichols Herefords for supplying our noon meal. Our next stop was at Broken B Herefords owned by Oliver & Caitlin Beall and the boys. The Bealls have just moved to the Stockton area from eastern Kansas and are getting settled in to a new environment for themselves and their cow herd. They had all of their cows on display along with the herd sires. We travelled on to Herbel Herefords where Jon and his family had their Miles City bred cattle sorted up for the tour goers to see. This is a herd with a long history and the quality really showed. From Herbels we went east about 5 miles to the Meitler Herefords stop. Since we last visited the Meitler operation, Gene’s sons Clint and Darris have come along side of their father and taken an active part in the management. They did a magnificent job of

supplying the evening meal and showed us a top notch group of Hereford and black baldy females to inspect. It was a beautiful evening that topped off a great day of viewing Herefords. The next day had a wonderful start as the central part of Kansas was blessed with rain. No one complained as we progressed along the tour route in sometimes very heavy rain. The rain was definitely a God send for the area, and we were blessed in that we drove in rain, but at each of the three stops it would stop and allow us to view the somewhat soggy cattle and pens. The first stop was at Bookcliff Herefords, hosted by Tom Krauss and his family. Tom had his replacement heifers up along with two pens of horned and polled Hereford pairs and a group of herd sires he had used this summer. He spoke of his extensive AI program with emphasis on feed efficiency and carcass quality that is proven out in his program of feeding most all of his steers for the past several years. Our next stop was at Brannan & Reinhardt Polled Herefords near Bison. They had received almost 4 inches of rain that morning, but it stopped shortly before our arrival and allowed everyone to see some top quality polled females and bulls on display. We were also able to witness one of Kent Reinhardt’s granddaughters riding her show heifer. In his remarks Kent spoke of the family tradition that was at the top of his thoughts and also the constant striving for improvements in their cattle. We drove through more rain on our way to the final stop of the tour at B&D Herefords near Claflin. This stop was hosted by the Beran families. The pens were pretty soupy by this time, but no one complained. We all slogged out and look at a great set of fall calving cows and the bulls that would be offered in the B&D fall sale. The Berans also supplied the tour folks with a noon meal that was excellent. That concluded the 2018 version of the Kansas Hereford Tour and once again it showed the depth of quality that can be found all over the state of Kansas. Every year we try to get to as many herds, large or small, that we can on our tour and showcase just how good these Hereford cattle are. Maybe some of our Kansas herds don’t get heard from real often on the big stage, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a lot of high quality cattle out there to be evaluated and considered when making breeding decisions. The quality of the cattle is only eclipsed by the quality of the people involved with our annual tours and this year was no exception. Thank you once again to all of the tour sponsors and the breeders that made this event so successful.

In 1973, a base price on each bull was introduced by the BCIA Test committee in the Red House Junior sale. This established a priced that covered the value of the bull going on test plus the costs incurred at the test station and sale. Since discontinuing the official BCIA test in 1998, Knoll Crest Farm has continued this practice in our April sale.
