Johns Hopkins University 1976 Hullabaloo

The Johns Hopkins University, a privately endowed establishment , was the first institution of higher learning in America to embrace the university concept. Founded in 1876 with a bequest from philanthropist Johns Hopkins, it has become internationally known both for its Medical School and Hospital, and the superb quality of its faculty.

The picture which appears on the first page of this annual is taken from John Singer Sargent's portrait ''The Four Doctors.'' The canvas was painted in London in 1905 at the insistence of Miss Mary Banett for presentation to the University Seen from left to right are:

William H Welch (1850-1934), professor of pathology to the University and the Hospital ; William S Halsted , professor of surgery and a pioneer in surgical technique ; Dr . William Osler , physician-in-chief to the Hospital , professor of Medicine in the University and founder of the Tudor and Stuart Club ; and Dr . Howard A. Kelly , professor of gynecology in the University and gynecologist at the Hospital

Johns Hopkins is a small , coeduca ti onal universit y . The facult y of Arts and Sc iences , wh ich inc l udes eng i neering and the Even ing College , are located on the Homewood Campus in North Baltimore . The Johns Hopkins Hospital , the Schoo l of Hy g iene and Public Health , the School of Health Services and the School of Medicine occupy a comple x of build i ngs i n east Baltimore. The Applied Physic Laboratory, noted for its contributions to the applied sciences in a var iet y of f ields , lie s midway between Baltimore and Washington , the School of Advanced International Studies , located in Wash ington , D C also operates a center for foreign studies in Bologna , Italy

Everything changes and yet Nothing changes .

Someone once sa id that the secret of ev er y institution is locked away in the c o rnerstone of its buildings Now I don ' t kno w if that ' s true , but there are maintenance men who swear that the ghost of curmudgeonly old Charles Carroll , s igner of the Declaration of Ind e pendence and the proprietor of Homewood farm still clumps his way through the hayloft of the Barn What he ' s looking for , nobody knows , yet there are Barnstormers who ref use to go into that little side apartment for fear of d isturbing the ancient man's rest

Now I' m not a superstitious person, but did you ever notice how the fa ll moon comes through that small spire? And that far off , distant ringing of a cow bell on those dewey Spring mornings . They say the noises have gotten louder since the statue of Johns Hopkins was moved to 33rd Street in 1954 . The two never got on , you see , and I guess Homewood ' s just not big enough for t h e both of them Everybody knows that construction on the Eisenhower Library was halted for a year - the official e x planation was " underground water ." Hummh , I wonder . And as for Shriver Hall , all those unaccounted for delays. It just might have been Daniel Coit Gi lm an enraged at the thought that his would not be the only tower on campus Gilman got his revenge . . . he rings every quarter hour to remind us that he is st i ll around , but it just might be that it's Shriver who gets the last laugh , winking back at night when nobody is looking

The Johns Hopkins Seal was officially adopted in December of 1885 The seal combines the aims of

Maryland, which embody those of the family of Lor d Baltimore , with symbols of learning. The objects are placed on an az ure background on the upper part of a shield bearing the Baltimore arms. The shield is hung upon a bough of oak and is surrounded by the name of the in st it ution The last detail of the seal is the Motto, Veritas Vos Liberabit "Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."

This year I have wondered what Daniel Coit Gilman would think of the Uni v ersity which he i naugurated 100 years ago were he able to see it now . I th i nk he would be pleased . He might be surprised at the fame achieved by Johns Hopkins in medicine and by our comple x it y, and I think he wou ld feel very much at home on the Homewood campus . Johns Hopkins remains true to his conception of an institution committed to advanced research and teaching The quality of faculty and students remains high , and Gilman e x pressed such concern for the education of women that he would be delighted that women and men no w study at the University as equa ls Our exce llence in the physical and natural sciences continues true to our traditions , and Gilman might be impressed with the strength of the humanities and social sciences - areas that have received new emphasis in recent years The Eisenhower Library would surprise him in its size and quality , because he thought that the University could rely primarily on other librar y resources in Balt imore, and he would be delighted with the renown of The Johns Hopkins University Press which he founded As the 10th President of the University , one of its happiest features for me is our relativel y small size and the fact that we still interact with each other on a human scale , and I think this would also be the feature of Johns Hopkins today that would please Gilman most .

Once upon a time . .. there were no dormitories

After the university acquired land for the Homewood campus in 190 2 , it began to plan just what sort of buildings it would need at its new home . The early planners dreamed dramatic dreams. Their first sketch, in 1906 , showed an immense campus of nearly 40 large build i ngs including a chapel and three museums A major part of this plan was a comple x of 10 dormitories facing a central quadrangle

This grandiose plan soon met with the hard realities of budgets and endowments By 1915 , only three buildings (Gilman , Latrobe and Maryland Halls) had risen on the Homewood campus. Eight years would pass before even one dormitory would rise.

While the university was downtown , it proved feasible for students to live in the many nearby boarding houses However , there were fewer such establishments in the " suburbs " up Charles Street. This led the Committee on Academic Life to declare in 1915 that " residence upon the new grounds is of such great social and educational value that every effort should be made to inaugurate it. " The committee sent out members in all directions to ex amine the dorms at Princeton , Dartmouth , Harvard , and M l.T. and concluded that " the dormitories should be comprised of all elements of the university- undergraduates and graduate students , fellows and unmarried faculty , rich and poor and ' sports and grinds '."

Though they thought the idea of a dormitory was splendid , the committee apparently was doubtful that students would share their enthusiasm

In their 1915 report , they were trying to think of ways to encourage on-campus residence Among the inducements considered were scholarships and fellowships , a reduction in tuition , and, most interesting , a reduction in the courses required for graduation

World War I temporarily diminished student ranks and talk of a dormitory faded But when the war was over , student enrollment began to climb and the need for housing became urgent . At the same time , the alumni were looking for a suitable memorial to the Johns Hopkins men who had given their lives in the war

Diehl Baker (b. 1871 , d 1937 , AB Johns Hopkins 1892 LLD Washington & Lee 1894 , JHU Trustee 1919-1937 .)

A solution to both problems took the form of the Alumni Memorial Dormitory . The alumni felt that a dormitory would be a living memorial to their colleagues and, in June of 1919, an extensive campaign , headed by George Radcliffe (AB-1897, PhD-1900) undertook to raise a fund of $300 ,000 to pay for the new building. Albert Shaw , the editor of American Review of Reviews , who had stood next to Woodrow Wilson in the glee club, sent in $1,000. Friendly challenges between the classes and bets on attendance at reunion dinners added to the fund Yet despite such enthusiasm , the fund fell short of its goal and raised only a little more than $200,000. Meanwhile the builder ' s estimate kept growing until it reached $500 ,000 , forcing the university to dip into its own funds to make up the difference . was broken for the Alumni Memorial Dormitory on June 12 , 1922 . It was intended to be the first of a projected group of several dorms stretching northward from Homewood House When the dormitory opened in the fall of 1923 , its first group of 137 occupants were a mixture of graduate students , instructors , and undergraduates :hey had a choice of single rooms (furnished with a bed, a desk , two chairs, a four toot high dresser with six rawers, a lamp, a wastebasket and two blankets) , two room suites for one person , or three room suites tor two people

The new dormitory was based on the English system of " houses ." It consisted of six " houses " or entrances , a common dining room and seve ral " dignified and attractive " common rooms which were generally preempted by ardent bridge players All but one of the entrances were identified only by a letter . The exce ption was Symington House , which in return for his family ' s $10 ,000 contribution to the building fund , was named for W . Stuart Symington ( AB 1891 , PhD 1894) .

At fi rst an attempt was made at self government but for several rea sons , the system failed It was repl a c e d b y t he Board of Go vernors , made up of one ele ct ed an d one appointed member from each entrance Pr esiding ove r the Board was the Warden of the Dorm itory For ma n y years the Warden was Dr . John Rathbone Oliver , a physician-turned-graduate student and professor, who lived in Symington House. At the end of each Board meeting , Dr Oliver would take out a bottl e of port - not bootlegged , he quickly pointed out , but bought by him as a physician - and share it with the me mbers From Dr Oliver ' s note that one bottle of port las ted him two years one can guess at his generosity w ith th e precious liquid! Mrs Ida Vanniman was the first " m anagress " of the dormitory . She was in charge of the ser vants and the dining room , and .she was the enforc e r of rules Among the regulations posted on the doors we re admonitions to act with dignity , warnings against dam aging furniture and playing radios too late or too loudly , and in large letters , notice that pets and women were strictl y forbidden in any room without the permission of the ward en or managress Residents were free , however , to stay out as long and as la te as the y pleased

Though the dormitory was intended to " foster mutual know le dge and esteem and to secure the influence of the more mature in forming the characters of the younger , " the following article from the Newsletter from March 29 , 1927 , leads one to wonder at its effectiveness:

'' This year the dormitory was the scene of more freshman -so phomore skirmishes than it has been in previous y ears

An egg encounter by the entry B boys appropriately opened the banquet season at the dormitory We announce with great pleasure that a few graduate students were egg victims .''

Though the depression had squashed the hopes of ever building a large dormitory comple x, by World War II , it was apparent that more on-campus housing was essential. As 1950 approached , the dormitory , built to house 150 students , was packed with 270 young men To accommodate them , double bunks were installed in single rooms and suites intended for two now housed four .

In 1946 , a new committee was established to plan a new dormitory . Ex hibiting little foresight , they considered placing the new unit behind Remsen and Mergenthaler Halls because '' this space will not be needed for any further academic ex pansion. " (This space is now the site of Macau lay and Dunning Halls ) This site was abandoned in favor of one close to the existing dormitory The committee also considered the idea of providing space for each fraternity chapter within the new structure but this was soon abandoned . A pleasant idea , which also never materialized , was for a new dining room with facilities for eating on an outside patio in warm weather .

After much discussion , it was decided that the new dormitory would imitate the style of the older one , that it would contain an infirmary and housing for appro x imately 350 students , mostly in double rooms , and that it would contain a lounge (now the snack bar) rather than another dining room . Despite their nicknames as the " cinderblock cells ,'' much thought and planning went into the design and furnishings of the dormitory rooms

Ground was broken for the new building at homecoming in 1953 , and it was ready for students in the fall of 1954 It cost the university $1 ,694 ,000.

The two dormitories , known as the Alumni Memorial Residences , housed 592 students in 1959 ; the first year only undergraduates were permitted to live there Today , though a few upperclassmen live in the dorms , the majority of residents are freshmen - both male and female . From the days when women were strictly forbidden in the rooms , the universit y and the dormitories have come a long way with two all -wo men dorm houses ( Adams and Baker ) and five coed houses ( Lazear , Royce , Sylvester , Vincent and Willard).

university community " could live in the dorms , the cost of room and board in a single room started at $41 O per year A suite of rooms cost $ 5 45 a year

Soon after the second dormitory was completed , it was suggested by students that each entrance be named after a famous individual from the university ' s past , rather than being uninspiringly labeled A , B , C , etc. The idea was well received and , with the help of Dean G. Wilson Shaffer and Stewart Macaulay , secretary of the university , each house was named .

February 22, 1976 marked the 1OOth Anniversary of the founding of the John s Hop ki ns University Symposia and spec ial ev ents sponsored by all divisions of the University were part of a week-end long string of festivities staged in honor o f the event

The weekend opened with the Centennial concert given by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra , Sergiu Comissiona , Conductor , and the Goucher-Hopkins Chorus at the Lyric Theater on the evening of February 20th

A prologue was delivered by Dr Harry Woolf, linking the University to the political and moral principles ex pressed in the Declaration of Independence and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony The program itself was highlighted by a choral piece by alumnus and noted composer Hugh Weisgall , lyrics by John Hollander . Entitled Ode to Hopkins , the composition was in a modern , abstract style, contrasting sharply with the flowing lines of other pieces played : Brahm ' s Academic Overture, Dvorak's 3rd Symphony and Beethoven ' s Choral Fantasy.

Commemoration Of 100 Years

J.H.U. Centennial Weekend

The various sympos ia included : the Symposium on the Impact of Natural Sciences on Society , featuring Dr. Linus Pauling (Stanford Univ ) who spoke on " Sci ence and the Well Being of People "; Dr . James Watson (Harvard Univ ) , on " The Imp act of Molecular Biology on Cance r Research " and Dr Wolfgang Panofsky (S tanford Univ .) on '' Science and Arms Con trol . ' ' A symposium chaired by Dr Steven Muller examined the future of the American university as a social i nstitution

The principal event of the Centennial Celebration was the Commemoration Day convocation which took place on Sunday at the Lyric Theater. The Jubilee Overture and Consecra tion o f the House Overture performed by members of the Baltimore Symphony , conducted by Ellery Woodworth , were also performed at the inauguration of President Daniel Coit Gilman , one hundred years ago An academic procession of the Presidents of Maryland Colleges and Universities followed by

Johns Hopkins faculty filled the Theater. Honorary degrees were awarded to Dr Vito Camacini , Rector of the University of Bologna, Princess Ashraf Pahlavi , twin sister of th e Shah of Iran , and Lord Eric Ashby , former master of Clare College , Cambridge Dr Camacini and Princess Ashraf delivered short responses Lord Ashby delivered an e xtremely well received address on the role of the university in society

The presentation of the honorary degree to Princess Ashraf and her response were i nterrupted by political dissidents within the audience . The inappropriateness of this was felt by the audience which drummed their outbursts with applause There was also the question of the appropriateness of the bestowal of a degree on Princess Ashraf. Protests were made on the basis of her morality and political credentials A rally held several days late r attracted several f acuity members and outside speakers

The weekend left the campus with a sense of our history and dign it y. More than that it po i nted out that the centennial is only one point on a continuum .

Outdoors Club

The Outdoors Club was formed several years ago to enable students with similar interests to enjoy outdoor activities together One of the Club ' s major attractions has been its schedule of outings . This year , the Club has been very active , offering inner tubing , hiking , canoeing , orienteering , rock climbing , and cross country skiing . With its present membership of about 60 people the Club was able to organize at leas t one trip on almost every weekend during the Fall semester

Special awards were presented to : Dr Hillard Berger , ( posthumously), for distinguished service and loyalty to the Hopkins community ; Dr Joyce Hogan , for outstanding service to students and student life ; Jerrie LaPointe for outstanding contributions to student life and student activities ; Elaine Stephans for journalism ; Alan Fink , for his leadership ; and Gerard Olszewski received an award for his distinguished academic record and overall participation

Undergraduate Diploma Award Ceremony

On May 21 the Class of 1976 gathered under the huge tent erected on Keyser Quadrangle to receive their diplomas. They were greeted by proud parents and friends , and smiling classmates. Tom Wicker , of the New York Times , was the Keynote Speaker , charging the Class of ' 76 with the responsibility for the personal liberties of all Americans in the decades ahead . After the Invocation by Christian Iossa , graduating senior ; and greetings from Steven Muller , President of the University ; M Gordon Wolman , Chairman of the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering , addressed the Class briefly Senior Class President , Alan Fink ended the ceremony with his short remarks

The Editor and Business Manager of the 1976 HULLABALOO have reserved this space for the special acknowledgement and recognition of those people who have made our lives , with regard to this book , just a bit more tolerable
