Longtime community member Joe Kirshenbaum has been selected as the Jewish Federation of Omaha's Humanitarian of the Year. The award, our community's most prestigious, will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Federation on

Rabbi Elchonon Zohn, internationally recognized as an expert on issues of Jewish rituals relating to death and burial, will be in Omaha for a series of programs on Sunday, July 9.. . Rabbi Zohn is the founder and director of the Chevra Kadisha (Sacred Society) of the Vaad Harabonim of Queens, NY. He is also the founder and coordinator of the Association of Chevrot Kadisha, a national network devoted to exchanging. current information and technical assistance in the field. The primary purpose of a Chevra Kadisha is to perform the rite of tahara, the Jewish ritual washing and dressing of the body in iachrichim (burial shrouds) prior to burial. The first session on July 9, 2-5 p.m., in the social hall of the JCC, will give a training session and demonstration for members of Omaha's Chevra Kadisha. - Members of the community who are interested in becoming part of the Chevra Kadisha should contact Rabbi Howard Kutner, Rabbi Paul Drazen or Rabbi Aryeh Azriel. This training seminar is designed for both experienced and novice Chevra members. • • At 7:30 p.m., in the JCC auditorium, Rabbi Zohn will speak on "It's a Matter of Life and Death." This evening lecture is open to the community, and will be an enlightening session discussing Jewish law and tradition. "As a Jew, one is deserving of a burial reflecting the richness and the beauty of Jewish tradition and belief," Rabbi Zohn explained. The laws and customs of the Chevra Kadisha as well as Jewish traditions at the cemetery and during the mourning period are not simply ancient rituals," he added. WASHINGTON (JTA) - The White House is staying silent about what transpired at last week's meeting between President Clinton and Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat here. Before the meeting, Clinton would not comment on either the June 23 scheduled Israeli withdrawal from more of the West Bank or the Sept. 13 Palestinian-declared deadline for statehood. "If we're going to make peace, we're going to have to deal with the difficult issues, and the less we say now the better, I think." he said. After the two leaders met in the Oval Office for nearly three hours-twice as long as had been scheduled, Arafat told reporters the discussion was "veryfruitful"but did not give any specifics. Reports from negotiating teams at the Boiling and Andrews Air Force bases have hot been optimistic. Clinton said Wednesday that the Israelis and Palestinians "still had work to do" before a three-way summit with the United States could take place. P.J. Crowley, spokesman for the White House National Security Council said the process is "a marathon" and that time is not on the side of either Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak or Arafat. Negotiations between the Israeli and Palestinian teams broke'off briefly Wednesday because of the Palestinians' ongoing displeasure over a delay in the Israeli withdrawal and Israel's reluctance to release Palestinian prisoners. Barak did make a goodwill gesture later, signaling he would release three Palestinian prisoners. • Arafat called the gesture "insulting" and said Barak lacked the desire to work toward a comprehensive peace. "At this difficult time, and faced with the obstacles we are facing in the negotiations, we really do need the assistance and help of President Clinton," Arafat said before leaving to have lunch with U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.

"The Torah says one of the first things a Jewish community needs to organize and maintain is a cemetery," stated Leon Wintroub, a member of the Board of the Mount Sinai Cemetery Association. Preserving Jewish cemeteries is also important, said Wintroub, to preserve Omaha's Jewish history. Mount Sinai Cemetery, established about 1935, estimated Wintroub, was associated' with the former Adas Yeshuron Synagogue, an Orthodox congregation: However, tEe cemetery is no longer connected to any congregation. It is maintained by the Board members of the cemetery's association. Joe Guss is President. Wintroub is Vice-president/Treasurer, and Al Feldman is Secretary of the Association Board. Storytelling festival opens; Corinne Stavish appears at Temple Israel The annual Midwest Storytelling Festival opens today at the College of St. Mary. Among the storytellers are Corinne Stavish, who will also appear at Temple Israel during services tonight, 8 pan. Local storytellers at the festival include: Ozzie Nogg and Rita Paskowitz. JTA News Briefs Public school officials cannot let students lead prayers before high school football games, the Supreme Court ruled Monday. The 6-3 decision stemming from a Texas case said the prayers violate the constitutionally required separation of church and state. The United Nations will dispatch 1,000 more peacekeepers to Lebanon next month to help patrol the border with Israel, said U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan. His announcement came despite a warning from Lebanon not to deploy more peacekeepers until Beirut agrees that Israel has completely withdrawn from Lebanon. A Torah hidden in St. Petersburg for 70 years was unveiled in a ceremony at a Brooklyn synagogue. The scroll, which is 180 years old, was brought in .1993 to the United States, where it was restored. In a move that could destroy Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak's legislative majority and force new elections, four ministers and three deputy ministers from the fervently Orthodox Shas Party submitted their resignations. The resignations do not take effect for 48 hours, giving Shas more time to try to press its demands that Barak release more'state funds for Shas' financially troubled school system. But Barak's office said Tuesday, "There will be no surrender to Shas."

Our responsibility to the Western Galilee When the Israeli government finally made the agonizing decision to withdraw from the security zone they established in southern Lebanon, little thought was given to the future well-being of their allies, the Southern Lebanese Army (SLA). Within hours of their departure, SLA personnel and their families (most of whom are Christian) started pouring through Israel's northern border. Terrified they would be shot as "collaborators," many of them left only with the possessions they could carry. Within hours, a volunteer effort was organized in the northern border towns to house some 2000 refugees. Many of them are living in hostels, bed and breakfast inns and kibbutzim. And the Western Galilee is bearing the brunt of this burden. The Western Galilee, as you may recall, is Omaha's Partnership 2000 Region. P2K was developed as a pro-
ject to fund specific programs decided upon by a committee composed of representatives from the Western Galilee, along with their American counterparts from the 11-city Midwest Consortium. This "people-topeople" project allows donors in Omaha to see exactly where their overseas allocations are going. To assist our P2K partners with this unexpected burden of housing, feeding, clothing and educating SLA refugees, Jewish Family Service is accepting cash donations to be forwarded through the Jewish Agency directly to our Western Galilee partners. All manner of supplies will be purchased in Israel, from diapers and baby food, to books and medicine. Though the refugees are Christian, it is our obligation, as Jews, to assist "the stranger among us" in need. Israel may be out of Lebanon, but some Israelis, unfortunately, are not. On a fateful night in June 1982, a battalion of young Israeli soldiers there suddenly found itself in the middle of a heavily fortified Syrian encampment Twentyone Israeli soldiers were killed and three were captured. When other children ask Danny Eisen's fouryear-old daughter what her father does, she says that Daddy is a prisoner of war. Not precisely true. He is often away from home, to be sure, and as a result of war. But what keeps him "captive" is his • work on behalf of true captives. When you're a little girl, it's hard to tell the difference. Only when you're older do you consider him a hero. At'41, Danny Eisen hardly looks the part of an international activist. Slightly built, with a beard, glasses, wavy hair and long sidelocks tucked behind his ears, the Toronto-born Orthodox Jew seemB more like a science teacher than the intrepid strategist behind a world-wide, grass-roots coalition whose diplomatic initiatives have affected American foreign policy and placed Israeli hostages on the international agenda. Except for the forceful passion in his voice when he speaks about his cause, one would never guess that he travels around the world to meet with heads of state, intelligence operatives, terrorists and anyone else who might conceivably play some role in locating and bringing home three Israeli soldiers missing now for 18 years. There isn't a day that goes by that Eisen doesn't think about the missing men; he even dreams about them. As it happened, the three soldiers captured in Lebanon—Zachary Baumel, Tzvi Feldman and Yehuda Katz-were part of a battalion with a high proportion of Orthodox soldiers. When Eisen recently addressed a delegation of Christian clergy, the listeners sat open-mouthed as they heard how, when it became clear that the battle was hopeless, the soldiers discussed complex halachic questions regarding ethics in battle and captivity, including the Jewish legal position on suicide in the face of torture. Since the Syrians had broken their codes and were listening in, the men improvised an ad hoc code using an ancient system of Jewish numerolo-
gy, which the soldiers with yeshiva training deciphered for the others. Yehudah Katz drew on his extensive knowledge of Jewish legal and ethical writings, and addressed his fellow soldiers on the proper ethical and emotional qualities demanded by Jewish law of a Jewish soldier. Witnesses say he managed to strengthen the resolve and calm the fears of his fellow soldiers, many of whom had never before experienced battle. Eisen has also taken up'the cause of another missing soldier, Ron Arad, who was captured after bailing out of his crippled plane over Southern Lebanon. Over the years there has been a steady flow of information indicating that some of the Israelis are still alive and being held hostage by Syrian and Iranian operatives. Eisen works relentlessly to keep the issue of the soldiers' fates "high profile" in the media and on the agenda of Western governments and Israel. In this way, he has helped ensure that the men are not forgotten, and that those responsible for their fate are held accountable. Initially, Eisen, an Orthodox rabbinic scholar, had simply wanted to help the missing Jews, and bring about, closure for the families. In the words of the mother of one of the missing men, "Imagine not knowing whether your son is dead or alive. Imagine the fear that you'll eventually find out that he was alive and you hadn't done everything in your power torescue him." With time, however, he came to realize that an even larger ideal hovered in the background. Throughout their history, Jews have always held that the value of a life cannot be defined by political considerations. The Talmud places tremendous emphasis on the obligation to redeem captives, and Jews have always gone to extraordinary lengths to do so.
Today, says Eisen, with the yawning divisions-religious, political, ideological-in the Jewish people, the sense of responsibility to Jewish captives may be one of the last fundamental principles capable of uniting all Jews.

That has come to the forefront as Jews in Iran stand before a kangaroo court, and, Eisen maintains, it is evident in the broad support he has received from Jews of all stripes in his effort to find and free Israeli captives. At the onset of the Oslo peace process in 1993, there was increased opportunity for dialogue between Israel and the Arab states, and the imminent return of the missing soldiers seemed a reasonable possibility. To Eisen's dismay, though, the issue of the captured soldiers was never once mentioned publicly by Israeli officials. That fact was the midwife of the International Coalition for Missing Israeli Soldiers, Eisen's organization. He was reluctant to leave his rabbinical studies, but expected the position to be only temporary, just until the plight of the missing soldiers was resolved. Seven years later, the group's Jerusalem headquarters still has a look of impermanence. There is hardly any furniture, just tables, phones, fax and copy machines, and stacks of papers, files, and promotional material. . Support for the effort comes from across the political and religious spectrums, and from around the world. "The success of the organization shows that this is still a core value that can speak to people," says Eisen. "We have wealthy donors and people going door to door in Mean Shearim, a neighborhood of mostly poorer, very religious Jews. People give whatever they can." . Despite their broad-based support, most of the money raised is used in the lobbying effort, for travel, telephone and advertising. Consequently, there's only a small, dedicated staff. It include Raye Rakefet, a shy, unpretentious woman who works out of her home in Har Nof, a Jerusalem suburb. Despite her unassuming demeanor, or perhaps because of it, she is a remarkable lobbyist. During an eight-month period last year, Raye placed more than 8,000 phone calls in an effort to overcome opposition and pass an ambitious bill through the US Congress. In August, 1999, it passed unanimously in both houses of Congress and was subsequently signed into law by President Clinton. Its passage and enactment represented a startling coup by any standard. Foreign policy is not generally codified in legislation, the bill moved with unusual speed and there was significant opposition to overcome. Eisen doesn't believe in luck, but neither does he believe it was just his group's hard work. Again he stresses the unifying power of the issue. "These four missing men are a binding force in world Jewry today. There is almost no chasm this issue can't cross. And that's a tremendous source of merit for them." Eisen is now pushing for similar legislation in Great Britain and other Western countries. Will these legislative initiatives put an end to the hostage taking that has plagued the Middle East over the past two decades? Eisen is skeptical. "Kidnapping soldiers is now replacing terrorism as a primary strategic tool of the Arab rejectionists. It's better for p.r., and it's cheaper." Eisen says his wife, Sarah Malka, is his major source of encouragement when the.obstacles seem almost too formidable. She acknowledges that his absences are hard on their three children, but believes this is mitigat-
ed by the benefits of seeing in their father a model of conviction, someone willing to go to extraordinary lengths to help others in need. She herself was brought up with such a model, and speaks with pride of her greatgrandfather, Rabbi Dr. Nathan Birnbaum, whose monumental efforts to preserve both Jewish lives and Jewish values take up several pages in the Encyclopedia Judaica. For his part, Eisen hopes his task will soon be done, and that he will be able to be home more often like other fathers. He looks forward, too, to when hell have more time to engage his passion for study. His home is lined with hundreds of Jewish texts. "When I got involved with this, no one imagined that this issue would drag on for so long. I've missed years of Torah study," he says. "Even though I know it was the right thing to do, it has still left a big hole. To the Editor: There is a petition drive being conducted now to eliminate any chance Nebraska would ever legally recognize a committed relationship between two men or two women. The text reads, "Only marriage between a man and woman shall be valid or recognized in Nebraska. The uniting of two persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar same-sex relationship, shall not be valid or recognized in Nebraska." It is currently not legal in Nebraska (or any other state) for two people of the same gender to be married. This is not expected to change in the foreseeable future. Vermont has legalized "civil unions" but its status beyond that state's borders is uncertain. If this .petition gets on t h e November ballot, it would have far reaching repercussions. Even disre-
garding the idea of a legal same-sex union, this measure would allow any public institution in Nebraska (for example, the University of Nebraska) to prohibit domestic partnership insurance benefits, hospitals to ban a domestic partner from being "the next of kin" and many other civil rights that heterosexual partners now have. If passed, this measure would permanently change the Nebraska constitution—something rarely done and something that should be thoughtfully and thoroughly considered before enacted. As a Jewish people we are aware of persecution and "anti-sentiments" that have been directed toward us for centuries. The fourth annual Cantors' Concert will feature a variety of Jewish music ranging from secular show tunes and pop music to the sacred, including Shabbat, holiday and Israeli music along with cantonal humor. It will take place on this Sunday, J u n e 25, 7 p.m., at Temple Israel. Beth El's Cantors Emil Berkovits and 6. Michael Horwitz and Temple Israel's Cantor Jennifer Blum will perform solos, duets and trios, while Beth Israel's Cantor Emeritus Leo Fettman will provide a little bit of Jewish humor along with his music. Pianist Julie Sandene will provide musical accompaniment. The four cantors are looking forward to the upcoming concert. Blum said, "The Omaha community is so blessed to have newly invested Cantor Horwitz with his . soulful voice and warm personality. I am sure Cantor Berkovits and Fettman share my excitement as together we will share an evening singing the music that unites us as one community." Cantor Horwitz added that he is "excited to be the fourth cantor to join this established group. The community will have the opportunity to hear a variety of musical styles and voices at this concert." Berkovits believes that these community concerts are important not only for the community that has an opportunity to hear a great variety of music, but also for the presenters themselves. "We, as cantors, seldom get a chance to express ourselves musically on this level because our religious services are very precise . . . we can actually create new compositions and at the same time use such concerts as 'a platform' for them, he stated. "This year, I hope to sing two of my latest creations, V'ha'arev Na, a prayer in praise of the study of Torah and Eshet Hayil, an excerpt from the Book of Proverbs that praises the Woman of Valor," he added. Fettman likes to add humor to his music, stating that "people like to smile and laugh." Since he performs as a solo, "I have no restrictions and can do anything I want!" In addition to the four principals, a choir consisting of members of the three synagogues will perform. Young Jewish adults aged 21-26, who have never been to Israel with a peer group, are being offered the opportunity to enjoy two educational and funfilled weeks exploring their heritage in Israel for the unbeatable price of $300, including round-trip airfare from New York. These trips are made possible by the Birthright Israel gift. Created by philanthropists Charles R. Bronfman and Michael H. Steinhardt, the Birthright Israel gift covers roundtrip airfare from designated cities and 10 days of programming in Israel for Jewish young adults who have never before participated in a peer group trip to Israel, with the balance of the program costing only $300. At one time, the tree-landscaped cemetery at 7705 Crowne Point Avenue stretched across approximately six acres, but the southwestern half was sold to Beth Israel Synagogue in 1972. Currently, a caretaker lives on the premises; she is responsible for inspecting the plots and for their security. There is also a little chapel on the grounds. In addition, a sprinkler Bystem and general maintenance such as sidewalks and the grounds must be maintained. When Mount Sinai Cemetery was established, perpetual care was not an option. The state of Nebraska requires a certain percentage of revenue from the sale of lots to be set aside for perpetual care of cemeteries. But with only an estimated six to ten funerals a year, there is not enough income to sustain the care of the cemetery. Nor does there appear, as the years go by, "to be any new generation of individuals interested enough to take over and be active in managing the cemetery," noted the Board members in a letter written in November, 1995. "The number of funerals. . .is not sufficient to insure the proper maintenance and operation of the cemetery in the future. The Board of Trustees.. . decided that it would be in the best interests of the cemetery association that they attempt a fundraising drive to raise the perpetual care endowment as close to $100,000 as is possible," recommended the Board members in the letter. A request was also made in the letter to supporters to include the cemetery in their wills. At that time, a trust fund included approximately $39,000. Wintroub suggested that now as much as $200,000 may be a more appropriate amount to maintain the cemetery. Many of the children of those buried at Mount Sinai no longer live in the Omaha area. I spent 15 minutes the other day trying to decipher a hand written note. The writer iB a highly educated, articulate person whose opinions and suggestions are respected, no matter the subject. So how come he can't write like a normal person? Now there's a topic just ripe for discussion—the way people often scribble and call it handwriting. I wonder if it's because, as we get past the early grades in school where we're required to write daily assignments, we get more and more careless. Or is it because most of us use some kind of mechanical device which, after a while, seems to make longhand obsolete? Early on, I remember how important my first typewriter was, whether I had to write a letter or a theme for English class. I remember, too, how proud I was of the way my finished paper looked. . .how neat and tidy, compared to the old way. Ink blots weren't unheard of, and corrections sometimes were quite noticeable when doing cursive. First we had the typewriter, now we have the computer keyboard, both of which preclude even the need for owning a good pen! Remember when a really good pen was a valued gift? Of course, that was when people actually used such implements on a daily basis. Personally, I admit I never write longhand when I can use a keyboard. It's a matter of legibility and wanting to be certain the person receiving my message will be able to read it. There are exceptions, of course. I try to write personal notes, such as a thank you or an acknowledgement of some kind, by hand. I want to be sure such a note doesn't look "cold," which it might if

done in mechanical printing. I remember actually learning to write, instead of print. I can recall doing various exerciseB with ovals and slants, practicing the formation of every letter of the alphabet. Doing lines of a's and b's and all the others. I even remember the trouble I had with the x and the z, trying to find just the correct look. And here's an idea somebody should really explore: one of the subjects in medical school certainly Bhould be "Handwriting I," taught by former grammar School teachers. Future doctors should learn how to write a prescription so that it can be read without calling the writer for verification. That's not such an unreasonable requirement, do you think? Wait a minute—I just remembered something. Are there still handwriting experts whose testimony was often used in legal matters? Or, sometimes just to "study" and thereby tell all about the writer. Hmmmmm. I wonder if such experts will eventually become obsolete? Well, it's not an earthshaking subject of really great importance, but you must admit I make a good point. People today just don't take time to write, by hand, nicely and legibly. Most people, that is. The men in my family mostly write like nine-year-olds, and only one of the women has a really pleasing style in her longhand. So that's my.story for today, boys and girls. My question for the day is: "What was the Palmer Method?" If you know the answer to that, I can guess your age to within a year!

Rabbi Aryeh Azriel is looking forward to this partnership with Dan with great expectations. "Dan will have a chance to see the inner workings of a congregation and understand all aspects of congregational life. I love Dan's passion for Judaism, the depth of his knowledge and his compassion. A graduate of Omaha Central High School and Colorado College, Fellman spent two years studying at the University of Judaism before beginning his rabbinic studies at Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion's Jerusalem campus in 1998. He is entering his second year of studies at the Cincinnati campus of HUC-JIR. Fellman has served as a student rabbi at two synagogues and will serve in a similar capacity in Joplin, MO, during the coming year. He has also taught at several religious schools and was a rabbinic intern at Beth El Synagogue in Omaha. Fellman is a regular contributor to the "Sparks from" the Word" column for the Jewish Press and was recently named editor of the student publication at HUC-JIR, The Monthly, Before beginning his rabbinic studies, he was a founder of the Hillel Group at Colorado College and spent a summer as a White House Intern, where he worked for Vicepresident Al Gore. Rabbi Debbie Stiel said, "It is so wonderful to have Dan here. It is always nice to get a fresh professional perspective on everything that is happening at Temple. Omaha aids Western Galilee in aftermath of exit from Lebanon by Jill Belmont
For many years, soldiers of the South Lebanon Army and Lebanese civil administration officials worked alongside Israelis to protect the southern Lebanese population from terrorist organizations. Now, with the recent withdrawal of Israeli forces from the southern Lebanese border, these 6,000 people have become refugees in northern Israel; destitute, and in need of clothing and supplies, and the Omaha Jewish community, through Partnership 2000, is being asked to come to their aid. Partnership 2000, a program of the United Jewish Communities (formerly UJA), pairs U.S. cities and regions with cities and regions in Israel, for economic, social and cultural development and exchange. Omaha participates as part of a consortium of 13 Midwestern cities in Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Texas and Kentucky, which are paired with the Western Galilee region. "Israel is committed to the safety and security of these Lebanese refugees, and is prepared to absorb anyone who chooses to relocate to Israel with his or her families," said Zoe Riekes, who serves as the local chairman of Partnership 2000, as well as the consortium's social and cultural chairman. She also noted that in addition to their dire economic circumstances, the SLA soldiers, because of their close work with Israel, have been repeatedly threatened with execution by Hezbollah leaders. "The refugees, many of whom are being housed by kibbutzim in the region, are in desperate need of all kinds of items used in everyday life, especially children's clothing," Riekes said. Along with clothing and supplies, she said that monetary contributions are also encouraged. Partnership 2000 has been successful in fostering a variety of relationships between the Omaha Jewish community and Western Galilee residents, Riekes said. Thus far, the program has made possible exchanges in the areas of education, medicine, women's issues and Holocaust programming. Omaha has hosted a number of Israelis who are exploring business and educational opportunities, as well as representatives from the Ghetto Fighters Museum. In addition, this month, several Israeli physicians will visit Omaha to share information and observe techniques of local doctors. "Through Partnership 2000, the relationship is reinforced between Jews in Israel and in the United States," Riekes said. "Over the years, people have wondered how their campaign dollars are used in Israel. This program not only shows exactly where their contributions are going and lets everyone see the effect on the social, cultural and economic development in Israel; it also puts a very personal face on this wonderful, growing community thousands of miles away." Now, at a time when the partnership needs our help, Riekes said that Omaha has traditionally stepped up to the plate to help others in need, and she is hoping that this time will be no different. "Our community is really amazing in terms of supporting people who.are in dire need of assistance," she said. "In Omaha, all you have to do is ask, and I'm confident that through our generosity, we will make a difference to the Lebanese refugees in northern Israel." . My father isn't Jewish, and when my parents got divorced, he became a religious Baptist. So, in my mind, I was stuck between two religions.
