Endowments provide 31 scholarships

The Bureau of Jewish Education has announced that scholarships from 10 endowment funds have been awarded to 31 Omaha area college students. These funds are administered for the Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Omaha by the Financial Aid committee of the Bureau of Jewish Education. In 1984, Phil Sokolof created and funded the Ruth Sokolof Special Education Scholarship Fund to honor and perpetuate the memory of his late wife, Ruth, who was noted in the Omaha community for her work with deaf and retarded preschool diildren. Designed to benefit students Tlie fund is designed to benefit students in the fields of special and general education. Recipients of the Sokolof Scholarship for the coming year are: Stacie Katelm«n, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Claire Passer, University of Nebraska-Omaha; and Alan Potash, University of Nebraska • Lincoln. In 1990, Phillip G. Schrager established the Lois Jeanne Schrager Memorial Fund as a tribute to hii late wife who was actively devoted to community service. Eugene Gorbatov, University of NebraskaLincoln; Gabrielle Pleck, Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Neil Silberatein, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and Irina Tsed, University of Nebraska-Omaha, have been named Lois Jeanne Schrager Scholars for the 1993-94 academic year. A special grant from the Phillip G. and Terri L. Schrager Supporting Foundation will make fund* available to Tatyana Demldovlch, University of Nebraska-Omaha; Kim Kahn, Clarkson College of Nursing; Maksim Menkov, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Sam Paaaer, Drake University; Tanya Rubeshin, University ofNebrssks-Omaha; Staole Katelmaa, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and Anne Kawaler, University of South Florida. The Livingston Scholarships were created in 1987 by the Trustees of the Milton 8. and Corinni> N. Livingston Foundation to provide Ainds for collegs students. The family and friends of Don and Nancy Greenberg created a scholarship fund in their honor which is designed to benefit freshman students. Alex Goldman, University of Nebraska-Omaha, is the recipient of the Don and Nancy Greenberg Scholarship for the 1993-94 academic year. The Nate H. and Beatrice Sherman Scholarship Fund was endowed by the Nate H. Sherman Foundation to provide annual scholarships to qualified college students. Igor Etua, University of Nebraska-Omaha; Boris Itin, Brandeis University; Nataly Pisetaky, University of Nebraska-Omaha; and Oksana Zheregi, Creighton University, have been named Sherman Scholar.i for the coming academic year. Zarina Kosinovaky, who is a student at the University of Illinoia, is the 1993-94 recipient of the David W. Frank Memorial Scholarship, which was established by Mr. Frank's family to honor his memory. Designed for Juniors It is designed for students who have completed their sophomore year of college. The Edward Zorinsky Endowment Fund was established by the Sonia Zorinsky Trust. It is intended to provide university tuition for college students as well as scholarships for Jewish summer camps and Israel trips for high school students. Amy Cohen, University of Chicago; and Judy Levin, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, have been named Sandra L. Feldman Scholars for the 1993-94 academic year. The Omaha Jewish Community College Scholarship Fund was established to provide financial aid for residents of the Omaha Jewish community. Elie Gorbatov, University of Illinois, is the 1993-94 recipient of this endowment. The Bureau of Jewish Education administers 16 scholarship and loan funds for the Foundation of the Jewish Federation of Omaha. These funds are designed to benefit Jewish students in a variety of educational pursuits: preschool, day school, summer camps, Israel programs and university studies. In addition, it administers funds for preschool scholarships through the Carolyn Kully Newman Fund, college loans through the David E. Beber Scholarship Fund and the B'nai B'rith Dr. Abe Greenberg/Henry Monsky Lodge Endowment Fund, Day school scholarships, as well as aid for youth and Israel programs, are provided through the Esther K. Newman Memorial Fund.
