In the few years since these preschoolers made their earthly debute in 1988 and late 1987, the world has become a different place. On a global scale, the Soviet Union cracked into 15 sovereign republics, the Berlin Wall crumbled into thousands of souvenir scraps of brick, and Middleeastern children grew accustomed to the sound of Scud missiles overhead. In the United States, jobs became scarce, an animated film (Beauty and the Beaat) was nominated for the Motion Picture Academy's best-picture award, and a Democrat was elected to the White House for the first time since 1976. Jewish life in Omaha changed too: 205 immigrante arrived here from Russia; Beth Israel Synagogue and Temple Israel brought new i-abbis and cantors to their pulpits; and Beth EJ Synagogue moved westward, enabling Jews to attend services without venturing east of 72nd Street. For the 17 children pictured herfe, life becomes m6re fascihating each day. Now learning to write their, names, they also attend pre-school, help their parents take care of younger brothers and sisters, and make telephone calls, and peanut buttarwuidwichep all by thembelves, • • ' ' .• ' Inside this issue, on pages 4 and 5, parents descrtbe their own youngsters, the children who will become the fu-8t B'nai Mitzvah of the rtew millenium.
