Beth El to offer interfaith support By -Carol Katzman, publicity (This article includes opinions of the writer.) .Beginning Feb. 3, Beth El's Project Link will sponsor an interfaith support group, open to anyone in the community, free of charge. Facilitated by Maggie Kenney, a clinical social worker, the group is aimed at interfaith couples, families and parents of those couples iand Jews by choice. Ms. Kenney will help the group explore' their feelings and concerns which often arise from' the 'stresses created by an interfaith relationship. "There is some confusion about what to do about intermarriage," stated sociologist Gary Tdbin of

Brandeis University in a recent article in Hadassah magazine. "Parents and grandparents are afraid that if they state opposing views too strongly, they will drive their children, grandchildren or children's spouses away." According to a recent Council of Jewish Federations study, 52 percent ofthose bom Jewish are now partners in an interfaith marriage. Both the recent Jewish Federation survey of the Oitjaha Jewish community and Beth El's own congregational survey showed a need for programs and projects addressing the issue of interfaith marriages and their raniifications on families arid institutions. . . Project Link chairman

llene Klein added, ",We welcome individuals or couples from the community, members of any synagogue or unaffiliated, who are seeking a link to others involved in interfaith situations. Not only will the support group help examine feelings, it is hoped that it wUl .lead to better conununication and relationships. "Interfaith marriages are a f§ct of our lives today," Mrs. Klein- concluded. "We need tools to help Us cope." The support group dates are Feb. 3 and 17, March 2. 16 and 30, at Beth El, 145th and California streets. 7-9 p.m. For information call Mrs, Klein, 334-1185, or Beth El, 492-8550.
