Ry Dvora Wayawen (WZP8) "Eat your bread with joy, drink your wipe with a imny heart." tlie Bible tails ua (Ecdea. 9:7) and then is no festival more joyous than Purim. It falls on the Hebrew date, 14th Adar, except in Jerusalem where it is celebrated one day later. 16th Adar is known as Siuahan Purim, recalling the fact that the Jews who lived in the Persian town of Sfauahan continued to fight their enemies on 14th Adar, then celebrated thw victoiy a day later. It was ordained that towns in Israel with andent walls dating back to the days of Joshua should celebrate Purim on 15th Adar. For thoae of us fortunate enough to live in J«ru8«lam, tho cslsbration goea on for two days. On 14th Adar,

"miahloach manot" (giiWof fruit, cookies, cakea. sweets and nuts) are delivered to friends living outside Jwusaktn, and the next day ainular packages are prepared for fkmily and frienda at home aa well as the poor. Both days we eqjogc seeing the skreata filled wi()i miniature Queen Esthers and Mordechais, brides and "batmen, clowna, cohnntoww and cooks, as the childrMi dress up for what is the nearest thing Israel haa to camivaL In the kibbutzim, alao, there is great gaietymusic, daroae. theatrical performancea, beauty (inaan competitions, games and fun. Purim is a merry, UBiohibited hohday—the one iw4ival where you are permitted to drink "Ad lo Yada..." until you cannot

tell the difference between "Blessed be Mordechai" and "Cursed be Haman," the hero and the villain respectively of the Purim story |Me«^Uah 7b). That is now the giant fancy dress parade hdd each Puiim in Tel Aviv came by the name "Adioyads." For those interested in gematria, the two Hebrew phrases "Blaeeod be Mordsehai" and "Cursed be Haman." have ths same numerical value of 502, which is perhaps an excuse also for the conftiaioB. he^)ed along with lots of intoxicating beverages for a people with a repwUtkin for aobriaty. ActiMJbr. the obligation to bscoms intoxicated at Purim is ths only iQstancs in the whole of Jewish Utsratura that ncammoDds such action, and svsD than moat (Costinasd o« Page 7)
