Rabbi Aryeh Azriel was elected rabbi of Temple Israel at a congregational meeting last week. Rabbi Azriel comes to Omaha after serving Baltimore Hebrew Congregation as associate rabbi for five years. He succeeds Rabbi Stephan F. Barack who served the congregation for over four years. Rabbi Barack succeeded Rabbi Sidney H. Brooks, who retired in 1985 after aerving the congtegatioa for 3d years. A native of Israel, Rabbi Azriel ia a PhJ). candidate at Baltimore Hebrew Univeraity. He received the degree of master of arts in Hebrew letters and hia ordination as rabbi from Hebrew Uni<» College in Cincinnati in 1983.
Rabbi Aiyeh Aariel Rabbi Axrial also attended Tel Aviv University and holds a bachekK- of arts degree from Spertus Colb^ in Chicago. According to Mdvin Epstein, president of Temple Israel, Rabbi Azriel has wide experience in teaching
and innovative educaticmal projects as well as camp directing and has led sevo-al congregational trips to Israel. In addition. Rabbi Azriel was active in numerous community activities outside his congregation, was chaplain at several institutions and instructor at high schools in various' fields of Judaic studies. Rabbi Azriel, his wife, Elyce, and three-year-old draghter, Leora Ann, will be moving to Omaha in late June. Rabbi Brooks will serve w acting rabbi in the interim. "We are pleased to welcome Rabbi Azriel and his family to Omaha," said Mr. Epstein. "We look forward to a long and productive rolationahip."
