Purim starts Wednesday This drawing by an anonymoas artist shows Pmim merrymakers celebrating the defeat of Haman. The vizier or dilef minister of Persia, Haman plotted to destroy all Jews on the 18th day of Adar but was thwarted by the intervention of Mordecai and his cousin, Queen Bather. As the villain in the story of Purim, Haman became a scorned ngure and when the Megillah (Scroll of Esther) is read in the synagofue, it is customary for children ta stamp'their feet and rattle noise-maliers at the mention of his name.
