Senator Packwood warns of foreign aid cuts

Six new projects funded

The programs are: Authorl Author!, ^wnsored by the united Talmud Torah of Omaha; Boat-Ride Through Israel and Dig for a Day,sponsored by the Jewish Cultural Arts Council; Hebrew in Pre-School,sponsorei by the JCC Early Childhood Dept;Holiday Learnafun,sponaored by Chabad Lubavitch of Omaha; North American Maccabi Youth GameB,8pon8ored by the JCC Health & Physical Education Dept.; and Omaha Teen Tour,8ponsored by the Jewish Community Center and the Bureau of Jewish Education. Guidelines for Newman grants state that projects must he innovative and seek to enhance the Jewish identity of youth in the greater Omaha area. "This meeting was particularly exciting,"' said Marvin Polikov, chairman, "in that there were so many good grant requests. It means tilings are happening. It means that people are out there worldng to make Omaha a quality Jewish community." Aothor, Author, will give UTTO students the opportunity to meet a well-knewn Jewish author in an informal setting and provide a first-hand account of the Jewish literary WOTld. "Our goal is to stimulate interest," explained Stanley Mitchell, UTTO director, "and to encourage our young people to readmore Jewish books." of Israel's 40th anniversary. Boat Ride will take place in the JCC pool and Dig will feature an exhibit on archaeology and the persona] thrill of finding ancient coins and pottery. Donna Olesh,. chairperson of the JCC Early Childhood Dept., explained that Hebrew in Pre-School was proposed so that children will be comfortable with the language at an early age. "They will be taught to use simple words and phrases in conversation and will have a more firm foundation for learning Hebrew at a higher level." Learnafun, presented by Shani Katzman of Chabad Lubavitch of Omaha, will offer a "truly educational celebration" of Jewish holidays. "It's like a party—music, games, entertainment and refreshments—all to reinforce the real reason for being there—to learn about being Jewish and to enjoy it." Fimds for the North American Maccabi Youth Games will give Omaha teenagers the opportunity to join 3,000 other athletes from international delegations in one of the largest Jewish youth sporting events in the world. Gary Bernstein, JCC assistant director, assured the committee that the Maccabi Games would be "an experience our young people would carry with them for a lifetime." Arthritis Foundation honors Cece Zorinsl(y Cece Zorinsky has been named 1987 Woman of the Year by the Arthritis Foundation and she will be honored Nov. 12 at the 14th annual Arthritis Gala at Peony Park, announced Judy Simons, Gala publicity committee. The announcement included the following citation: During her late husband's years as mayor of Omaha, Mrs. Zorinsky served as Omaha's "&:st lady" and was active in community organizations. She was on the board of Keep Omaha Beautiful and worked as a volunteer teacher-naturalist at Fontenello Forest. During her 10 years in Washington, D.C., she was an active partner in her husband's public service career, a charter member of the Congressional Wives Task Force, a group wWch studied and made recommendations on national issues. She also served as president of the Democratic Congressional Wives Forum and oh the board of the Nebraska Society m Washington.

Welcome planned for Menachem Mor The Jewish Cultural Arts Council has invited the Jewish community to attend a reception welcoming Dr. Menachem Mor and his family, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Jewish Community Center. Dr. Mor is the first scholar to be named to the Klutznick Chair at Creighton University. The Chair was funded by a $1 million gift bom Philip and Ethel Klutznick. Dr. Mor will be accompanied by his wife, Debora, and their three children. The Klutznick Chair provides that* a portion of Dr. Mor's time will be available to benefit the Jewish community of Omaha as well as in promoting educational and cultural studies in the general community. Following the reception. Rabbi Myer Kripke and the Rev. Michael Allsopp will discuss Jews & Catholics: Cooperation in Conflict. A second seminar wiU be held Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
