This fund was established by Phillip G, Schrager, in memory of hi* wife, to aid deserving Jewish college students. Eligibility is based on academic performance, involvement in extracurricular activity, emphasizing participation in Jewish programs, and financial need. l/sin Jeanne Schrager was a devoted community volunteer before her death in 1978. She worked for VIDA, a social service organization designed to help juveniles in trouble. She was active in the Nebraska Arthritis Foundation and was president of the Omaha chapter. Mm. Schrager also served as a volunteer at Children's Hospital, a* a grey lady at Cfarkson, and was also an active member of several Jewish women's organization*. Mnrry Frost is a 1983 graduate of Millrml High School, where she has consistently been on the Superior Honor Roll and wn» nominated os Woman of the Year as a freshman. She ia a mmWf6T thif tftiliotiu\Honor Society and.the National Forensica league. She has been an officer and active member of both the Temple Israel Youth Group and the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization. Alan Maline is an engineering ntudent at Northwestern University where he will bo a sophomore. An honor student, his high school career included membership in the Chess Club, National Honor Society, Explorer Scouts and Computer Club. Alan received a National Merit commendation. Israel Bonds announces 1983 Women's Cabinet By Barbara Simon
Maxine Kirshcnbaum, chairman of the 1933 Greater Omaha Women's Division, State of Israel Bonds, has announced the leaders who will form this year's cabinet. Carol Goldberg will serve as vice chairman. These leaders, Mra, Kirshenhaurn said, will coordinate the work of dozens of Omaha women who will contact tho
women in the community to nupport Israel through their investment in Israel bonds. "Despite Israel's many problems," she said, "Israel bonds have always been there to help the nation'n economic development: The building of roads, dams, water projects, construction in the Negev and dozens of projects to help Israel huild for the future." Richard Rips attends Washington University in St. Louis where he is a junior in the premedical program. In 1982, Hichard wus invited to participate in a research program in the Department of Psychology at his university. The program will provide him with his own lab and the opportunity to do independent research. During his high school yearn, Richard was active in AZA and BBYO. He was BBYO Regional president and has enrolled in Jewish studies courses at his university. Janna Shwartsman, a native of the Soviet Union, is a sophomore at Notre Dame University. She is pursuing a double major in engineering nnd industrial design and has received recognition for ort engineering projects. Her ar(continued on page 2)
Newman Grant .3 Funding for new nnd innovative programs is available through the Esther K. Newman Grants Committee. Money in designated for two different age groups. Jewish organizations and institutions sponsoring progwm« to enhance the Jewiiih identity of youth and college KtudentH may apply to the Esther K. Newman Fund. In addition, money is available from the Carolyn Kully Newman Fund. The Carolyn Kully Newman Fund was established to provide programs for kindergarten and preschool age children and their families. The aim of the grants is to strengthen Jewish identity and values through educational, religious, cultural, social and recreational activities. "Since the establishment of the grants program, several new and innovative programs have been funded," said Harvey Cooper, chairman of the committee. "They have added both educational and social opportunities that enhance Jewish identity. "Sponsoring groups are asked to participate financially or in kind. Organizations are encouraged to work together to provide programs that meet the needs of a cross-section of Jewish youth." Programs that have received grants from the Esther K. Newman Fund include Holiday Craft Programs for the Jewish Day School, computer assisted instruction at Beth Israel Hebrew School, a Jewish studies program for children with learning disabilities, Anti-Semitism and Youth Program sponsored by the ADL/CRC, Summer Shalinch Program of JCC Comp Chaverim and an.artist-in-residence for the Cultural Arts Department of tfie JCC. Money for tho allocations comes from tho Esther K. Newman Trust Fund, which was endowed with the proceeds from the sale of the Esther K. Newman Camp. The com: mittce will meet in October to evaluate proposals and allocate funds. Application forms will be mailed to all synagogues and Jewish organizations. Deadline for applications m Oct. 3, 1983.
