He pointed out that out of the $39 billion donated to charities in the United States, only $630 million of this is earmarked for the United Jewish Appeal. "Six percent of the Jews in the United States donate 94 percent of that 030 million," he said. Bernard Kalb, diplomatic correspondent- for the National Broadcasting Company, told the group that the April 23 pullback of Israel from the Sinai will "linger, haunt, and help shape immediate history." He said the impact of
Sadat on Israel has been to "create an enormous chunk of peace" and that now the challenge will be to create a. bigger and better peace by enlarging it to other countries. Mr. Kalb said that while no one is optimistic about the dimensions of autonomy for Arabs In Judea and Samaria the United States can provide the "chemlstryiand environment" for bringing autonomy about. The Middle- East is as "explosive" as it has ever been, Mr. Kalb said. One of the major unknowns, he said, is the result of the Iran-Iraq war, , "It's off the front pages, but there is a terrible fear that an Ayatollah victory will fuel an Islamic surge aimed at conservative Arab states near Israel." A big question mark, he added, is Mubarck of Egypt and whether his realignment with the Arab fold will have positive or negative consequences for Israel. . Mr. Kalb asked the group for a show of hands regarding their opinions and concluded that most of the group considered Egypt's possible return to the Arab world as "perilous" for Israel.
