Beate Klarsfeld speaker at Yom HaShoah event By SuianRC Singer Program chairman Arrested in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Lebanon, Syria and Germany,..nominated In Israel in 1977 for the Nobel Peace Prizc.lhus one can describe Ucatc Klarsfeld who will speak at the Jewish Community Center Sunday, April 25 ot 7:30 p.m. Her talk titled, "One Woman's Fight Against Nazism", will be the conclusion of the week's activities for Yom flaShoah. the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust, sponsored by the Jewish Cultural Arts Council. The initial event will be the community-wide commemorative service to be held at Beth Kl Synagogue Tuesday. April 20 at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Klarsfeld, a German-born Protestant presently living in Paris, is married to a French Jew whose father died at Auschwttz.
Beate Klarsfeld Popularly known in the press as a "Nazi hunter", Mrs. Klarsfcld's career began after she and her husband Serge, a lawyer, began compiling dossiers on unpunished German war criminals. She gained notoriety in 1963 when she publicly slapped the Chancellor of West Germany, Kurt Keisinger, thus bringing world attention to his Nazi backgr&frtd. The following year he lost his bid for reelection to Willy Brandt. .
The exhaustive research that Mrs. Klarsfeld and her husband have done has resulted in the unmasking of the Nazi records of many prominent Germans who operated in France during the war. These people have been living quiet lives in Germany since 1945, many of them as judges, businessmen and politlcans. Armed with volumes of documentation of their complicity in the "Final Solution of the Jewish Problem", Mrs. Klarsfeld, through her protests that have created public and press attention, has put pressure on a complacent German government to initiate judicial proceedings against these war criminals. The fact that these people can be brought to Justice in Germany is due greatly to the results of her efforts. Solomon, executive director of the Jewish Federation of Omaha since September. 1075, will become executive vice president of the Indianapolis Jewish Welfare Federation, effective July 1. In accepting his resignation last Monday night, the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation, expressed sincere regret over Mr. Solomon's leaving, but congratulated him on his new post. "Lou Solomon took over the professional leadership of this Federation when our financial viability was in question and our direction uncertain. His contribution in time and effort above and beyond the call of duty will always be appreciated by this community," said Paul G. Cohen, Federation president. Mr. Cohen sold that a search committee has been appointed, with Howard Kaslow named as Chairman. We hope to be able to make some progress in finding a successor before Lou leaves on June 30," Mr. Cohen added/ . •
Mr. Solomon told the Jewish Prem that his decision to leave Omaha was one of the most difficult he has ever been called upon to make. He is Mitchel Orlik, Federation Staff Associate, who has' been involved in both the Women's Campaign and Young Leadership development. Mr. Orlik has been named' a Kraft Award winner for 19S2, one of two in the country.
