indalism bill gains support of committee

By Morris Maline The Legislature's Judiciary Committee expressed support for a bill that would stiffen penalties for religious oriented vandalism during a hearing Tuesday In Lincoln. . "I don't have a religious corpuscle or atom in my body, but I support this bill," said Sen. Emic Chambers, vice chairman of the Committee. Sen. Chambers said the bill should be a significant deterrent factor. "It's a good bill. I want to see how the legislature deals with it." Legislative BUI 901, introduced by Sen. Peter Hoagland, Increases the length of potential Jail terms for vandalism directed against synagogues, churches, cemeteries, and community centers. Some of the Senators on the Judiciary Committee said that although they supported the bill, they weren't sure that it goes far enough to act as a deterrent. Senator Hoagland said that although stlffcr penalties may not stop the vandalism, passage of the bill would be "a statement that this state Is not going to tolerate religious persecution." At some time in the future, he said, measures will be introduced to include ethnic intimidation and legal means for damages to protect persons as well as property. Hahbi Mark Bisman o( Tifercth Israel Synagogue in Lincoln told the Committee of swastika paintings and windows being shot out'at his synagogue. Alan S, Katchen. director, ADL-CRC Committee, described the findings of

ADL in a recent survey of anti-Semitic vandalism In the United States. Religiously motivated vandalism is increasing, causing "pain, anger, fear and anguish," he said. Sam Fried, post chairman, Society of Survivors, said he was testifying in behalf of millions of innocent victims, because he survived. He pointed out how seemingly Insignificant acts of vandalism erupted into a Holocaust for Jews in Europe. Also speaking in behalf of the bill was the Rev. A.J. McMahon, of St. Frances Cabrini Church in Omaha.

He said that if the rights of all minorities arc not protected, "we stand to fall." This bill is a chance to stand tall, he added. Father McMahon said, "If the Jews suffer, I suffer. If the blacks suffer, I suffer. If the Chinese suffer, 1 suffer." "May God save us from another Kryatalnacht." Senator Chambers said that he had read books about the Nazi death camps and that he too gets a variety of hate mail. Important Issues such as this should come before the Legislature, Senator Chambers added.
