United Jewish Appeal Changes Campaign Thrust By Boris Smolar (Editor-in-chief emeritus, J.T.A.) " (Copyright IM1, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)

The United Jewish Appeal, which held its four-day annual national conference May 14-17, Is now quietly introducing some changes In Its campaign methods. It always held Its national conference In New York, bringing Jewish leaders from all over the country to the conclave. Last year and this year It held the gathering In Washington. It reported very successful results of Its 1981 campaign. The UJA fundraising drives are usually concluded at the end of the year when the goal for the coming year was announced. Now the UJA goal for 1982 was proclaimed more than seven months before the new year starts. Other changes In the UJA methods have taken place. One of them Is giving up the huge dinner In New York, usually attended by some 2,000 people from all over the country eager to see prominent Israeli statesmen and to listen to their addresses. Now the UJA leadership believes tnaf smaller gatherings pro-'

The UJA has committed Itself to raise $400 million for this five-year project with contributions to be made by American donors over and above their giving to the regular UJA-Federation drives. Some 200 Jewish communities in the U.S. are already participating in the project.. Now the UJA Is advocating a "Jewish Renewal at Home" However, Its leaders recognize that American Jewry can for the American Jewish community.
