Council Awarded Challenge Grant The Nebraska Committee for the Humanities announced the awarding of a challenge grant of $13,334 to N.C.J.W., Omaha Section for its Oral History project. According to Molllne Cassman and Role Meyers, project co-chairman, the grant money will be used to complete Phasell of the project.
In Phase I, N.C.J.W. volunteers conducted Interviews with Omaha's earliest Jewish residents and recorded the conversations. Phase H will employ two scholar/historians and an exhibit/designer to compile, edit and Interpret the information. A photo-documentary exhibit with accompanying text
panels and catalogue/book will inaugurate Jewish Book Month at the Jewish Community Center on Dec. 6, According to the provisions of the challenge grant, matchIng funds must be raised. Donations from local foundations and the Jewish community will be sought to fulfill the requirements of the grant.
Lincoln Honors Henry Wald LINCOLN - Henry Wald was honored recently for his years of service to the Lincoln Jewish Welfare Federation. Mr. Wald has served as the Secretary and as the accountant. For his service and unselfish dedication he was presented an Israeli silver medallion by Hyman Polsky, past president, on behalf of the Lincoln membership. In his acceptance remarks Mr. Wald Indicated his efforts have been motivated by the necessity of the work and the needs of the Jewish people. Mr. Wald was bom 1912 near Dresden, Germany. He studied at University of Dresden and University of Berlin, from which he graduated in 1934 with a Ph.D. In
economics. He also received a degree similar to American CPA In 1935. Mr. Wald worked from 1934 to the fall of 1938 for F. W. Woolworth Co. In Berlin, and was Incarcerated at Buchenwald Concentration Camp, November-December 1938. -•-• -; He emigrated to the United States In March, 1939 and lived in New York City until December 1939. In 1940 and 1941, Mr. Wald lived in Lincoln where he had several Jobs but most of the time worked at Northwestern Metal Co. In January 1942, he moved to Casper, Wyoming to work for a subsidiary of Northwestern Metal Co, He married Gretl Rothschild In October 1942 and a few days later was drafted into the
U.S. Army. Mr. Wald went overseas to Europe In August 1943 and served with British 8th Army In Sicily, with U.S. 3rd Army from early 1944 through October 1945 from Normandy to Berlin. He returned to Casper, Wyoming In October 1945 and moved to Lincoln in May 1946 where he lived since. He went to UNL from June 1946 through June 1947, became a CPA In July 1947 and practiced as such in Lincoln since then. The Walds have two sons: Steven who is a neurosurgeon at Cincinnati, Ohio and Kenneth, who holds a Ph.D. in political science and teaches at Memphis, Tenn.
Happy Birthday Israel Five year old Lindsey Welnberg holds a cluster of balloons—ready at a moment's notice—to release them in celebration of Israel's 33rd birthday. The celebration took place last Sunday at the JCC. The young balloonist is the daughter of Sherry and Jeff Taxman.

Early Deadline
Sermon in Wood Artist David Lazaraus worked nearly three months to carve this unique wall sculpture out of wood. The worn can be viewed at the JCC, along with the story of the sculpture.

Alan S. Kafchen Mew ADL Director Al Crounse, chairman of the ADL/CRCommittee, announces that Alan S. Katchen will assume responsibilities as director of the Plains States Region of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nal B'rith and the Community Relations Committee of the Jewish Federation of Omaha. He succeeds Barry Morrison who has been assigned to be director of the ADL office in Philadelphia. Mr. Katchen was the associate director of the Anti-Defamation League in Miami. His responsibilities included implementing ADL's educational and human relations programs in Florida, ranging from teacher-training seminars to the investigation of extremist group activities. Mr. Katchen also served as community consultant in the League's Chicago Office. Mr. Katchen has served on the faculties of education at the University of California at Santa Barbara and at Howard University In Washington, D.C. Mr. Katchen received a B.A. with honors In history from the University of Pennsylvania, an M.A.T. from Harvard University, and did his doctoral work in history of education at Johns Hopkins University. While at Hopkins, he was a Glim an and Johns Hopkins Fellow. The son of a rabbi, Mr. Katchen also received an intensive Jewish education. From 1976-1978 he was a community consultant in ADL's Chicago office. His major responsibility was In the area of education. Mr. Katchen developed a number of teacher-training programs in the Chicago area that received national attention. He worked with the School o! Education at Northwestern University to Institute a monthlong seminar on the Holocaust which involved participants from. throughout the United.
Alan Katchen States. From 1978 to the present Mr. Katchen has served In the League's Florida regional office. He has been involved in each of the fields that characterize a regional office. He has worked closely with the Discriminations Committee and, more generally, has served as an agency spokesman on civil rights matters relating to church-state, health, housing, and South Florida's refugees before a number of Florida legislative committees and other public bodies. While continuing his deep interest in ADL's education work in Miami, Mr. Katchen has developed a solid record of Intcrfalth work as well. He worked in Barry College to Initiate the annual Rosenhaus Lecturships in Catholic-Jewish Relations, and with the Ft. Lauderdale Jewish Federation and the Broward County Clergy Council to co-sponsor a community-wide Interfalth Dialogue during February, 1981. Mr. Katchen has been an ADL spokesman on TV and radio, including a recent Interview on French anti-Semitism that appeared on the CBS nightly news. In addition, Mr. Katchen has been involved in ADL's fund-raising campaigns and leadership development, and has written book reviews which have appeared regularly In the Miami Herald and Miami News as well as the Jewish Press. Mr. Katchen Is married to the former Reggy Ruth Saks of Havana, Cuba and Miami. .
