A Jewish woman who cares today and tomorrow. Bella Abzug, a leader In civil rights, womehs rights and world peace, will speak to the Jewish women of the community on April 1. The Chai and Grand Gift Dinner will be held on April 1, In the Jewish Community Center's Auditorium. Dinner will be preceded by cocktails at 7 p.m. In the Gallery West. Those attending will have the special opportunity of meeting with Mrs. Abzug personally. "This Is the first time a dinner has been held for the Chal and Grand Gift Divisions. All women who pledge a minimum gift of $1200 are Invited to this very special event," said Nancy Noddle, who cochalrs the Chal and Grand Gifts Dinner with Ducky Milder. "We have invited the husbands to share in this exciting evening," said Ducky Milder. "We are planning a dramatic candlelight effect for the auditorium to accompany the dinner which will be catered by ErwlnSlegler." On April 2, over 2.000 Jewish women will be Invited to the luncheon at Peony Park. "We felt It Important to have a speaker who would appeal to all the women of the Omaha Jewish Community," said Pauline Guss, chairwoman of the 1981 Women's Division Campaign. In addition to Mrs. Abzug, the Federation video tape, produced for last year's Men's Invitational Dinner, will be shown. After the program the women will be asked to make their individual, private commitments to the 1981 Campaign. "In anticipation of a large attendance, we planned the luncheon where a kosher meal could be served to over 500 Jewish women," said Nancy Homsteln, who co-chalrs the luncheon with Connie Kully. "To help women attend the luncheon, we have set up a transportation Committee to arrange rides for those who need them." "I am really enthusiastic about the luncheon and the guest speaker," said Mrs. Kully. "This is an Important event for the women of the community. We should show our support by participating." The Center for the Aging proposed by the Jewish Federation of Omaha has entered Its fourth and final phase. The Center Includes a longterm care facility to replace the existing Dr. Philip Sher Home, and an apartment complex for the well-elderly. Both new facilities will be constructed adjacent to the Jewish Community Center. The Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Omaha approved the general layout, site plan and concept for the nursing home as presented by the Phase III Committee and Hoger L. Schutte and Associates, the architect, on Feb. 24. If working drawings are approved and a fund-raising effort Is successful, construction may be started this year with a scheduled completion date of 1982. The Board authorized the architect to undertake the working drawings phase of the architectural contract. Also, the Phase III Committee was authorized to mount a $3.6 million campaign for construction of the home, its furnishings and an endowment for the operation of the home. The repairs involve the removal of concrete decking, the excavation of wet subgrade material, replacement with backfill, repourlng the concrete decking, and installation of a new piping system.
Applications for college scholarships from the Lois Jelnne Schrager Memorial Fund must be submitted to the Department of Jewish Education by March 15. Brochures describing the purpose of the endowment fund and the aid available for Jewish students may be obtained at the JCC. The fund was established to award four scholarships of up to $500 annually for recipients to complete undergraduate or graduate studies.
