Vaad WHS Supervise Kosher Meat Outlet A new kosher retail outlet offering frozen meats and sliced delicatessen meats is scheduled to open approximately Oct. 15 at 2603 South 120th street. The firm's application for kashrut supervision w(j|^approved unanimously by*the Vaad Hakashrut of Omaha at the group's meeting Monday night at the JCC. Approval was given under the following conditions: 1. That Hashgocha be provided by Rabbi Tibor H. Stern's permanent mashgiach for the wholesale operation at 50th and William streets. 2. That all slicing meats be clearly Identified by a tag or plumba while being sliced, or by a casing in the case of salami or bologna etc. 3. That all delicatessen meats sold be supervised by a

mashgiach appointed by the Vaad. The application had been filed by Larry Paletta, president, Kosher Pride Division of Pride Foods. Larry Chester, chairman of thejfaad Hakashrut, advised those attending the meeting that the application covered the retail outlet at 120th and Center, and not the planned wholesale operation at 50th and William streets. He said that Mr. Paletta's wholesale operation will be under the Hashgocha (supervision) of Rabbi Stern, of Miami, Florida, who is an international authority on Kashruth and that this arrangement was satisfactory to the local Vaad. Rabbi Isacc Nadoff, Hav Hamachshir of the Vaad explained that under Jewish law

it is possible for a non-Jewish owner of a meat facility to obtain Hashgocha if the operation is under constant supervision of a mashgiach. It was pointed out that wholesale operations where there is constant supervision by a mashgiach are treated differently than retail operations which do not require the same degree of strict supervision. Although primarily a selfservice operation, It will be possible for customers to place special orders for custom cuts of meat, Mr. Paletta said." Approval of the application now gives the Omaha Jewish community a second retail outlet selling kosher meat. Nate Shukcrt advised the Jewish Press that he would be managing the new facility.

Vatican's Statement Worries Jewish Leaders ByBorisSmolar (Wllor-ln-chltlcmcriluJ, J.T.A ) 0, Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Inc.)

Numerous leaders of the Catholic church in this country, usually friendly to Israel, are now In a great predicament. They, have been pushed Into an anti-Israel position by a Vatican policy statement on Jerusalem. The statement — the first of Its kind outlining the Vatican stand on the Jerusalem Issue — Is anti-Israel, strengthens the position of the Arabs, and is liable to create confusion in the friendly Catholic-Jewish relations In this country and everywhere else. American Jewish-leaders are worried. The document was circulated at the United Nations among all members of the UN Security Council, at the Vatican's request. The Vatican — not a member of the United Nations — obviously wanted Its position on Jerusalem to be known at the Security Council when the Jerusalem Issue'was debated there last month. The distribution of the Vatican statement is believed to have influenced the Council's adoption of the resolution censuring Israel for declaring all of Jerusalem its permanent and undivided capital. The resolution, as known, was passed by the Security Council by a 14-0 vote, with the United States abstaining. It is now believed that the Vatican's indirect pressure had much to do with the U.S. failure for the first time to use its veto at theUN on matters that spell danger to Israel. The move on the part of the Vatican in the UN did not attract attention of the American media; the attention was concentrated on the resolution Itself and on the failure of the U.S. to use Its veto to defeat-it. However, the move was not overlooked by American Jewish leaders. It came to them as a painful surprise.

The document makes It clear that in the opinion of the Vatican, Israel alone cannot provide the necessary guarantees regarding Jerusalem. The responsibility for Jerusalem, it argues, "goes well beyond the states of the region, and surpasses the interest of any single state or bilateral agreements between one state and others." American Jewish leaders are perturbed by the Vatican statement which — In addition to being presented to the members of the UN Security Council — was also published In Osservatore Romano, the official organ of the Vatican. They consider the statement as a political document intended to stake out a primary role for the Vatican In the unfolding negotiations over Jerusalem.

About 25 years ago the Vatican explicitly informed the American Jewish Committee that its concern was only with the holy places and the parts of Jerusalem In which they are located, not with the city as a whole. Its present stand is far removed from that assurance. What does the Vatican suggest now with regard to the status of Jerusalem?

Its intervention at the United Nations with Its policy statement indicates clearly that the Vatican now seeks to have a say on the disposition of Jerusalem as a whole. The' document challenges, in effect, Israel's sovereignty over Jerusalem. It minces no words in warning that "any unilateral act tending to modify the status of the Holy City could be very serious." They foresee that the issues on which the Vatican outlines Its Contrary to the impression it has given in previous years that stand may arise now in inter-religlous or other discussions In Its Interest lay only in protecting the holy places, the Vatican which Jews participate with Catholic representatives.
