The happiness and even euphoria exhibited by the government and the citizens of Israel when Egyptian President Anwar Sadat made
' his unprecedented 'peace mission to Jerusalem was deeply shared by all Americans, Including, of course, American Jews.

The scenes televised around the world were seen by us as an almost dream-like fulfillment of our hopes and prayers for 30 years — peace! No one could be happier than the American Jewish community if Sadat's visit would result In an equitable peace in the Mid?: die East. Our minds marveled at the sight of sworn enemies-tojthe-death embracing,
meeting together, vowing their mutual determination to strive for peace in the region. But now President Sadat seems to have opened a new initiative, as represented by his "Open Letter to the American Jewish Community," an initiative directed at generating American Jewish pressure on Israel. Since President Sadat directed his call to the Jewish community here, it is Important to respond to him, and to suggest that he's calling the wrong number.. Of course, American Jews — together with the majority of
Americans of other faiths and backgrounds — are committed to the support of Israel. But the euphoria the American Jewish community felt was not generated by President Sadat's visit to the Jewish community in Washington. It was generated by his visit as the representative? of the sovereign govenment to , Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, with the expressed offer to open peace negotiations with representatives of the sovereign government of Israel. .
