By Morris MaUne The 1978 'Omaha Jewish Philanthropies Campaign is' off and running. Federation. President Leonard Goldstein has appointed a team of leaders to spearhead a vigorous campaign. "We are on our way with an early start this year. We have a top-flight group of dedicated volunteers with a difficult job to do but we are proceeding with confidence and optimism," Goldstein said. The two teams of cochairmen are as follows: Joe Kirshenbaum and Harlan Noddle for the Men's division, and Leslie (Cookie) Hoberrnan and Lois (Ducky) Milder for the Women's Division. "While it's a little early to set goals, we must recognize that a minimum increase of 10 per cent Is needed to compensate for inflation," Goldstein said. He added that Omaha has not kept up with inflation the past few years and now must (Continued on Page 2)

Anniversary of Death By Shirley Goldstein Chairman, Omaba Committee for Soviet Jewry " Twenty-five years ago — on August 12, ,1952 — 24 leading Jewish writers, actors and intellectuals were executed by the Soviet Government. This was the ultimate expression of Stalin's quest to eradicate Jewish culture, Judaism and Jewish consciousness in the USSR. To this day, the Soviet Union has failed to lift the death sentence the regime has imposed on Jewish culture. ' In the winter of 1948-49 it is estimated that over 431 Jewish artists, writers and musicians were arrested, most of whom died in labor camps. But the fate of.the most prestigious Jewish intellectuals^ was reserved for the'summer of 1952. The "Jewish Trial" began on July 11, 1952 and lasted until the 18th. Among the 25 accused were the leading poets and writers — David Bergelson; Itslk Feffer; Peretz Markish; Benyamon Zuskin, and several academics and physicians. The accused were charged with being l) "Rebels" . . . 2) agents of "American imperialism;" 3) enemies of the USSR." The "court" on July 18, 1952, pronounced its verdict — the death penalty. Only one of the 25 was sentenced to a long prison term. On August 12, 1952 the executions were carried out in the cellars of the Lubianka Prison in Moscow. Recently, more ominous echoes of the Stalin state period were reawakened by allegations in Izvestia that some Jewish activists for emigration to Israel committed espionage and were linked to the American CIA, One of them, Anatoly Sharansky, has been held in prison since March 4 without rights to an attorney. Tosif Begun, in a Catch-22 situation, has been sentenced to two years in exile in Magadan near the Arctic Circle for "parasitism" after not being allowed to work when he applied to emigrate. Begun, 46, has been seeking to leave for Israel for the past five years. The evaluation of the Helsinki Accord currently going forth in Belgrade has not yet given us a scorechart of matching words and deeds. But one thing is certain: the promises that were made two years ago in Helsinki have not been kept. The 24 murdered writers, poets and intellectuals of 1952 are still remembered . \ . if we forget them . . . and those that are now being persecuted, It can happen again.
